A wonderful stay

We rented Forget-me-Not and Swallows Rest for a week in August as a family gathering with 3 children. We loved it and so did the children! They especially loved the donkeys and being able to run in and out of each other's houses! The cottages are beautifully presented and very comfortable. Lisa and Graham were really helpful - I can't recommend these cottages highly enough!

Relaxing week in fabulous cottage.

We had a wonderful holiday in Swallows Rest. The cottage was extremely comfortable and relaxing. We couldn't have wished for better. Dave looked after us brilliantly for the first half of the week and his local knowledge was invaluable. Lisa and Graham were equally as welcoming and helpful. In spite of mixed weather we had a great time knowing that we had a warm, welcoming place to go back to. Thank you.

Immaculate cottage in a fabulous setting

We booked 2 of the 3 cottages for an extended family stay over the Easter weekend. With 3 generations needs to satisfy we were more than impressed by what greeted us upon arrival. The cottages are beautifully presented, home from home with everything you need and a high degree of facilities. We were greeted warmly by Lisa who also gave us information on local walks, the local pub and bus services too. We would highly recommend a stay there & look forward to visiting again.

Swallows Rest - simply the best !

As me and my missus sat on the sun baked patio of Swallows Rest sipping our wine and looking out over the fields to the distant Robins Hoods Bay she said to me "you've come up trumps with this one pet"....and indeed I had. Firstly the location is both beautiful and practical....the three cottages are situated in a tranquil place with lovely views. There is plenty to see and do in the area with both Whitby and Scarborough being short drives away...and if you want to leave the car there is a very regular bus service. Secondly the cottage itself is immaculate. It is tastefully decorated and is spacious. Fixtures and fittings are new and the luxury of underfloor heating is a bonus. Upon arrival we were impressed at it being spotlessly clean and that there was some Yorkshire cake and sticks of rock waiting for us. Lisa and Graham were very helpful with Lisa even taking our kids on her dog walk...thanks Lisa! I have stayed in numerous hired accommodation over the years and I have to rank this place as up there with the best....try it out!

Excellent place to stay with stunning views and lovely owners.

Our stay in swallows rest was fantastic and we could not have asked for anything better. The surroundings are delightful and our daughter enjoyed fussing over the dogs, donkeys, cats and other animals that belonged to the owners. The cottage was clean, tidy, tastefully and modernly decorated and had everything we needed for our stay. The cottage is situated in an excellent place and towns such as Whitby and Scarborough are easily accessible by car but far enough away to enjoy the scenery and peace and quiet. The owners are fantastic and are welcoming and knowledgable about the surrounding areas and places that are good to visit. We all had an amazing time and really didn't want to leave. Hopefully we will return again soon.

A gorgeous little cottage in rural surroundings.

We stayed in a beautiful and charming cottage which had all the aminities we required. My little girl loved seeing the donkeys on the farm each day! The owners Lisa and Graham were so welcoming and accommodating, such lovely people. The only negative comment to mention which I feel is out of the owners control anyway is there were such a lot of flies to contend with! Which meant we kept all the windows and doors shut. The cottage got very warm as a consequence. I would highly recommend staying here and would love to take the rest of our family one day to stay in all 3 cottages. We also loved that one of the cottages is pet free, that was important to us having a young child. The decoration of the cottages was just gorgeous! The information we received from the owners about things to do in the area meant we had some really lovely family days out. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Swallows Rest - relaxing break

Spent a wonderful and very relaxing four days in Swallows Rest cottage, which we found to have been restored to a very high standard. It was well appointed and tastefully furnished. The cottages are down a little track off the road than runs into Scarborough one way and Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay the other, so are well placed for days out. Just across this road is the Flask pub which does good food by all accounts, but we didn't get to try this ourselves. Next to that is a small filling station which has a shop attached, handy for forgotten items. Despite being a short distance from the road, we were never aware of any traffic noise at all. In fact the only thing we did hear were the birds ! The views from the rear windows and the patio of the cottage were amazing, birds on the feeders, Bracken and Willow the donkeys and of course the sea which even after a little rain looked lovely with a rainbow which appeared to rise from the sea and lasted a very long time. We tended to sleep with the blind partly open as we found that with no light around the sky was so dark we could see a vast amount of stars, and it was lovely to lie in bed and fall asleep just watching them. We found Lisa and Grahem to be very friendly and chatty, they should be very proud of what they have achieved. They also have two gorgeous dogs and two cats that add to the charm of the place. We had lunch at the Magpie cafe in Whitby, which we really enjoyed. The batter on the fish was so light and tasty, not the cheapest of meals at around £30 for two of us, but well worth it. We certainly hope to visit these cottages again. Annette and Colin

A brilliant week in beautiful surroundings.

We have just returned from a wonderful week staying in Swallows' Rest; a homely cottage with tasteful décor very befitting of the surroundings. Waking up every morning to sea views, lush green countryside and a wide range of birds flocking to feed just outside our patio was a real treat. The cottage is in an excellent location to visit Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Scarborough and we made the most of the fantastic coastline (and good weather); we really appreciated returning to a little piece of luxury after a busy day exploring the local area. Lisa and Graham were warm and welcoming, instantly making us feel at home and George (our two year old son) loved meeting their donkeys, very friendly dogs and cat. We look forward to returning as there is still much in the area we would like to explore and enjoy!

Excellent!

We booked Swallows Rest as a family holiday and are so pleased we did. The property was everything we could have wished for. We were greeted by Lisa with a cup of coffee and then left to explore the accommodation, to discover a bottle of wine and other treats to celebrate Valentine's Day. The accommodation was 5 star, with everything you could possibly wish for to self-cater. The bedrooms are incredibly comfortable and well fitted. There is a heated floor throughout the ground floor which effectively heats the property and makes the winter evenings really cosy. There's lots of wildlife to see and our girls (6 & 8) loved the donkeys, dogs and cats. This property is perfectly located for Whitby, Scarborough, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and walks to Robin Hood's Bay. We will definitely be visiting again! Thanks Lisa and Graham for making is so welcome.

SUPER!

This fantastic cosy cottage is well worth a visit! The owners are so very friendly and aim to meet your every need. The cottage itself is very clean and beautifully presented through out. It has everything you will need no matter how long you are staying. The view from the patio is wonderful you can see the sea! The cottage is on the bus route to Whitby and Scarborough and is near a pub that serves good food. We would definitely recommend going. We are all looking forward to another visit thank you to you all ( dogs and donkeys included)

Short break

booked a last minute break to celebrate my birthday. First time using Owners Direct, but was very easy and quick to book. Swallows Rest is beautiful! Everything you could possibly need is available and lots of thoughtful additions, such as cosy throws on the bed and sofas, DVDs and even a torch for our walk to the pub! Everywhere is beautifully decorated to a high standard with lots of personal touches and spotless!! Lisa and Graham were very welcoming and keen to ensure we had everything we needed, but were respectful of our privacy. Would love to come back again. Thanks for a lovely weekend :)

Beautiful cosy cottage

We stayed in this lovely cosy cottage for three nights, wish it could have been longer! Beautiful decor and warm and cosy in a lovely quiet location but close to the coast. Well equipped and some lovely homely touches, the underfloor heating was very much appreciated after a bracing February walk along the beach at Robin hoods Bay! We will certainly be returning. Thank you For a lovely break.

About the host

Host profile image
Hi Im Lisa and live with my husband Graham on our 10 acre small holding, next door to the cottages. We enjoy welcoming guests to Meadowbeck and are on hand for advice/assistance but do give guests their privacy to get on with their stay in their own way.
We have 2 very friendly dogs, 2 donkeys who are out in the paddock from late Spring to Autumn, 2 goats, 4 sheep, chickens and ducks.
We moved here in 2012 and renovated our 1760's agricultural stone barn into 3 holiday cottages, our utility barn into a games room and added 3 Shepherd Huts - 1 near the barn and 2 off-grid in our meadow.
Graham planted lots of apple trees and now enjoys making Yorkshire Cider.
It has been an exhausting journey, a labour of love but we have managed to stay married to each other and wouldn't swap it for the world.
We're very proud of what we have achieved and our wonderful guest reviews support that we are providing a great service.

Why they chose this property

We fell in love with the area whilst visiting my parents who live nearby in Scarborough. We were keen to buy a property which allowed us to run a holiday cottage business but also gave us the opportunity to renovate a building ourselves and start the business from scratch.
We moved in July 2012 & started work on the barn - which had only housed Cows and Swallows since 1760 and is the reason for naming this cottage Swallows Rest.

We love living here surrounded by the beautiful North York Moors and looking out on our animal family every day. It's such a peaceful esape with great walks on the doorstop, yet close to amenities and the hustle and bustle of life when you need it.
It's great to share our dream with our guests and we love seeing guests return to Meadowbeck - even the Swallows return year after year (although they've been downgraded to the outbuidlings)!

What makes this property unique

Meadowbeck Holiday Cottages are in a great location. Stunning countryside and moorland views, as well as the beautiful coastline - what more is there?
Easy to access just off the main A171 Scarborough to Whitby road, yet in a quiet, peaceful area within the North Yorkshire Moors.
All accommodation has views of open countryside & the sea. There is an abundance of wildlife on our doorstep and the lack of light pollution gives us some amazing night skies - perfect for star gazing. We regualrly feed the birds, so that guests can enjoy their antics on the birdfeeders and nesting boxes.
Easy access by car or bus (from the top of our lane) to a number of quaint villages and coastal towns.
There is plenty of free parking directly outside of the cottages for easy access.
We're doing our bit to take care of the environment and have an energy efficient heating source, solar panels and our water is provided from a natural spring. Our meadow is organic with an abundance of wildflowers and we manage our woodland area to encourage the wildlife.
Electric Vehicle Charger for guests use - fees apply.
Storage for cycles.
Public Footpath with walks to the moors and coast - straight from the accommodation.
Guests Games Room onsite.
Fresh free range eggs from our hens, when available.
Outside dog wash with hot & cold water.
