About this property

A cosy country cottage in a tranquil rural setting. Sleeps 4 in 2 bedrooms.

The gite is in the small hamlet of Le Haut Fresnay, some 8 miles south of Domfront in Lower Normandy.
Le Fournil is built from local granite with a slate roof and adjoins the large barn which is now our home. The cottage accommodates up to four people plus a baby and is furnished and equipped to a high standard. When Le Haut Fresnay was a working farm, Le Fournil was the family’s bakehouse – and the original terracotta bread oven is still in place. The oven would have been pre-heated with burning bundles of wood, which would then have been raked out when it was hot enough. The stored heat lasted several days – long enough to bake bread, roast joints of meat and then finally bake pies for the family and the farm workers. It is now an attractive feature in the sitting room and lit from inside to show its construction.
Surrounded by five acres of Le Haut Fresnay’s grounds and meadowland, the cottage is set in an acre of private lawns and gardens. In addition, a stream, which runs through the garden, and two ponds attract a variety of wildlife. Le Fournil has its own private patio with garden furniture, a parasol and a barbecue. The patio is not overlooked and it catches the afternoon and evening sunshine – a delightful place to relax with a full glass in your hand and a steak on the barbecue!
Our guests often say that what really makes Le Haut Fresnay special – apart from our comfortable cottages – are the peace, tranquillity and special atmosphere of the surroundings. Most people arrive on holiday wanting to relax completely and we hope that Le Haut Fresnay is the perfect place to do just that.
The ground floor of Le Fournil is an L-shaped open-plan sitting room with a dining area, a kitchen area – and, of course, the bread oven. The sitting room ceiling is beamed and there are exposed stone walls. Comfortable seating is centred around the wood-burning stove and warm lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere.
There is a digital Freesat TV offering access to all the main UK TV channels and a DVD player. French TV is not available.
During the cooler months of the year, a complimentary basket of logs is supplied for the wood-burning stove, making this a wonderfully cosy room in the cooler months.
The central staircase allows the heat to reach the upstairs rooms as well, although all the rooms have electric heaters for extra warmth if needed.
The well-equipped fitted kitchen includes an electric oven and ceramic hob, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a microwave oven, a fridge-freezer, an electric kettle and a toaster. All the cooking equipment you could possibly need is provided, along with plenty of crockery, glassware and cutlery (six of everything).
The attractive central staircase leads to the upstairs floor, the two bedrooms and the house bathroom. The bathroom has a shower, a hand basin and a WC. There is a medicine cabinet with a mirror over the hand basin and a shaver socket.
The cottage has two bedrooms. The main bedroom is furnished with a double bed, bedside chests with lamps, a spacious wardrobe and a dressing table.
The second bedroom has twin beds, bedside tables with lamps and plenty of drawer and wardrobe space.
All bed linen (except cot linen) and towels are provided and included in our prices. If there is a baby in your party, we can put a cot in one of the bedrooms (we do not leave the cot in the house when it is not needed). We can also provide a high chair and a bed-rail for one of the single beds if required
Outside, there are ponds and a stream, lawns and mature trees, and wildlife everywhere. You can see red squirrels, and birds of prey, and if you are lucky, hares, deer and even (rarely) wild boar! The peace and quiet is almost tangible.
The local village, Lore, with its small supermarket, is within walking distance. Ceauce, a small market town with a full range of shops, a bank and a small weekly market, is a couple of miles away. 8 miles to the north is Domfront, a mediaeval market town with a fine church and a castle. Also nearby, you will find Lassay les Chateaux, with its picturesque castle, lake and rose garden. Bagnoles de l'Orne, about 15 miles away, is a spa resort set around a lake with a casino, many restaurants and smart shops.

Amazing!

As soon as we arrived we knew we had chosen we’ll, Nigel & Paula welcomed us and introduced us to our beautiful cottage. It was gorgeous, had everything we needed and in the heat was lovely and cool. We spent the hot days just chilling in the most fantastic gardens watching a huge variety of birds, butterflies, and the odd coypu. The surrounding area is full of so many historical castles, churches and delightful very reasonably priced restaurants. We couldn’t have asked for better hosts, a better cottage or a better area . We will definitely return to explore further and eat more!!

Absolutely lovely!

My husband, son and I had a wonderful stay at Paula and Nigel's. Ours was the Le Fournil cottage (there is a second cottage nearby, but everyone has their privacy; and a third which is tucked away further up the road, plus the main house). The cottage itself was simple but contained everything we needed, was squeaky clean and pleasant. The grounds outside are absolutely stunning, with loads of space to run around for children. The area is very tranquil, with nearby villages to explore, farms selling local produce and especially apple juice, cider and calvados, the specialties of this region, and an interesting horse show taking place in a local farm (check out La Michaudiere). The hosts Paula and Nigel went above and beyond, always helpful with advice and things to do; they live in the main house but make themselves effortlessly available when needed or otherwise leave their guests to it. Our toddler is absolutely fascinated with tractors, and Nigel was kind enough to let him ride with him on his mini tractor around the property. It was an incredibly nice thing to do and my son was ecstatic and still mentions his memorable ride to this day! I wholeheartedly recommend Le Fournil!

A découvrir absolument

A very peaceful place to stay,i

We enjoyed our stay here and if you want a relaxing holiday this is the place to be,we sat on the terrace and watched buzzards soaring above us and a fox crossing a nearby field. Our host were very helpful and gave us plenty of information about the area, the cottage had all we needed for a comfortable stay and would recommend it to family and friends.

A Week in the Normandy Sun

Le Fournil is in quiet rural location, possibly remote by some standards, and offers everything you need for a relaxed break. The most curious internal feature is the old bread oven. Your hosts have an extensive local knowledge and are wonderfully helpful and thoughtful. Help was on hand to sort out both a flat tyre on our car and to track down somewhere that we could buy new pedals for one of our bikes! Not your average holiday mishap. The local town of Ceaucé is charming and has the most wonderful boulangerie from where breakfast croissants can be had. Further afield is the medieval town of Domfront where we were fortunate enough to enjoy a medieval fair, with knights on horseback parading through the town and archery stands where would be archers could try their skill. Further afield you can strike out for the coast at Mont St Michel should you wish to, though it is a full day trip. As would be heading further in land to the museum at Le Mans. There is plenty to do in and around the region and Le Fournil offers the ideal base for exploring Basse Normandie.

Excellent charming cottage

We had a lovely weeks stay at Le Fournil. Both Nigel and Paul were excellent hosts and had a very good knowledge of the local area. The gite was beautifully decorated and comfortable and the gardens were immaculate. My daughter Charlotte was particularly impressed and fascinated with the bug house. Thank you for a lovely week.

Another relaxing holiday

Once again we had a most enjoyable and relaxing time at Le Haut Fresnay and it was especially nice to renew our acqaintance with Le Fournil - it is our favourite of the 3 cottages. As always, everything was well prepared, beautifully presented and in excellent order and we were made to feel most welcome by Nigel & Paula. We'd recommend it highly to anyone seeking a complete "get away". Our favourite nearby place for eating out is Bagnoles and their are several really good restaurants there. We also had a great Sunday lunch at l'Auberge du Grand Gousier restaurant in Domfront. We'll be back!

Excellent accommodation in beautiful surroundings

We have visited Le Haut Fresnay now for 11 consecutive years, staying in Le Fournil. The cottage is clean, comfortable, well equipped and set in glorious surroundings. There is ample room for children to play and explore, and for adults to relax. This area of France is very peaceful and ideally suited for walking, cycling (numerous quiet lanes on hand close to Le Haut Fresnay so bring your cycles), visiting local towns and villages, but close enough for a day trip to Bayeux, Mont St Michel or the Normandy Beaches. This year we made a return visit to Vitre in Brittany (a drive of about an hour and a half) and enjoyed a lunch of galettes, crepes and cidre. Delicious and great value! Nigel and Paula are very welcoming, friendly and helpful hosts with an abundant knowledge of the local area and are always on hand to assist if necessary. We certainly recommend a visit to Le Haut Fresnay and intend to return again next year!

About the host

Host profile image
We have lived, or had a home, in North Yorkshire since 1978, and have grown to love the Yorkshire Dales, especially Swaledale. We have led a nomadic life for many years, which is the nature of being in the RAF. Now ‘retired’, we still have a nomadic lifestyle. In 1993, we purchased and restored a collection of old farm buildings at Le Haut Fresnay in Normandy. This is now our second home, where we spend several months of the year managing our 3 holiday cottages there. In 1996, we acquired Corner House in Grinton, which was our winter home for many years. Grinton and Le Haut Fresnay are delightful places, each different, but both homes we love and cherish. We invite you to come and share our enjoyment of them. You will not find a warmer welcome! Corner House is available for holiday lettings all year round, whereas La Fermette is available (normally) only from mid-April to early October each year.

Why they chose this property

After many holidays in France, during which we always had an eye open to the possibility of buying a second home, with outbuildings and land, we were drawn inexorably towards Normandy. Not only was it quite close to the UK, enabling us to remain within easy travelling distance of our families, but it was also - to us - a beautiful part of France. So it was that on a cold and damp November day we happened upon Le Haut Fresnay in the Orne region of southern Normandy. We knew what we were looking for, and Le Haut Fresnay fitted the bill. We took early retirement and embarked on our mission to create a nice home for ourselves, using a derelict barn, and at the same time to turn the other farm buildings into holiday cottages. All are well established and 2 of the 3 (La Fermette and Le Fournil) have been in operation for 30 years. Construction of the 3rd, La Fresnaie, was completed in 2007.

What makes this property unique

Now, after 25 years and with all the hard work behind us, we have our lovely home and 3 holiday cottages, to which many of our guests return year after year. They, like us, enjoy in particular the peace and tranquillity that is a special feature of Le Haut Fresnay. It is a place to relax and shake off the shackles of everyday life, a place to soak up the atmosphere, whether it be on the terrace under a starry summer sky, or in the comfort of the cottage living room with a glass of wine and the woodburning stove for company. Our cottages offer a home from home, with every modern convenience. If you happen to be disabled we can offer you La Fresnaie, which we designed and built expressly for disabled guests. For our part, we offer a warm welcome and we can provide whatever help is needed.
