About this property

Idyllic and Unique House on the Lake

The lake is home to swans and ducks, and sometimes early morning or evening a family of deer can be spotted by the waters edge. The village itself is 500m away where you will find shops and the local pub and restaurant.
Lough Derg, Irelands second largest lake is just 3 miles away and is popular for both fishing, sailing and cruisers. Mountshannon, the adjoining village to Whitegate, is a picturesque village on the shores of Lough Derg with restaurants, pubs, and live music. There are walks on the Clare Walk Way close to the village and a lovely evenings walk is to walk through the village and down the countryside, around by Williamstown Harbor and back up to the village again - 7.5km

Located at the Southwestern edge of the Burren and running for 14km are the famous Cliffs of Moher. Hiking enthusiasts can do the Cliffs of Moher walk which starts in Fanore, stop off along the way at Cliffs of Moher visitor centre and finish up in Doolin where you can enjoy a lazy lunch and Irish traditional music.

The house itself is bright and airy and has views across the lake to the dense forest on the opposite side. There are 4 bedrooms, 2 kingside beds with en-suite. There is one double bedroom and one single. The third bathroom is located upstairs in the renovated attic

No words to express this lovely home, so peaceful. The swans were a delight as were the people in the town. The owner responded every time we had a question. Hope to revisit. Highly recommended.

Lovely Rural Ireland

Lovely house on a beautiful lake! The swans on the lake made it super picturesque. The house is a bargain for the number of rooms, bathrooms and living space. Short walk to wonderful dining spot The Half Barrel. Be aware u are in rural Ireland so Galway. Dublin or Limerick are over an hour drive away on what can be teeth clenching roads. Rita the owner is easy to message and responds quickly.

A nice house at the lake

We really enjoyed staying at this property. And the view of the lake from the living room was always very beautiful. There is a great pub and two shops for all necessities in Whitegate near by. The property is perfect if you want to explore the Lough Derg.

Expectations exceeded

We all loved this property, beautiful, peaceful setting, incredibly comfortable and hosts were responsive to all communications. The photos do not do it justice. This is the first VRBO property that I have felt this way about. Most other property’s photos seem more spacious and sunnier. This one is better in person. It's an amazing place. Stayed with 4 other friends, all older, and we hated leaving. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

So wonderful and peaceful!

My family and I absolutely loved this rental, and are completely thankful and grateful. Such a beautiful location, and centrally located. The washer and dryer combination is the best I've ever had in my various stays in Europe for the last 20 years! Not kidding! Rita, the host, is so responsive and helpful. Very happy with our stay! Thank you, thank you, thank you! :-)

Whitegate Lake House - Amazing

We had a amazing holiday, the house is the most well equiped we have ever stayed in, Rita has literally thought of everything you may need. The beds are wonderful and comfortable. I travelled with my 80 year old mum and my 11 and 8 year old children. They loved the space. The position of the house is just beautiful, waking up to the panoramic lake view each morning and watching the sunsets was a highlight! The house is ideally situated for sightseeing we visited the Cliffs of Moher. Lahinch, Spanish point, Killaloe, Kilrush, Kilkee and Adare to visit family. Thank you for an unforgetable.holiday.

About the host

Hosted by Rita Doyle Riordan

Host profile image
Hi, my name is Rita and I was born in Whitegate where the property is built. the house was built in 2003. We lived abroad as a family and this was where we could bring the children every summer so they could be part of a local community and spend time with their grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles. They are grown up now and spread across the globe but today, they still regard this property as home and all the great memories that came with it over the years.

Why they chose this property

This property is quite unique in that it is situated on a small lake. When you look across the lake all you see is greenery at the other side which is rare nowadays. The lake itself changes on a daily basis. Some mornings you can wake up to a beautiful mist rising off the lake, other mornings it is wild and fierce and sometimes it is as still as ice. To top it off the evening sunset is stunning and something to watch each evening.

What makes this property unique

The house is beautifully decorated in antique Balinese furniture which actually blends so well with the architecture and environment. The garden is large and is full of greenery and shrubs. There is a Gaelic pitch down the road (you can cross the field to reach it) so hurling enthusiasts can easily walk down to see a local game and then ramble on up to the local pub for some fantastic home cooking, and local banter. My family all live along the lake also so any questions all you would have to do is ask. It’s just a beautiful, well loved house in a stunning setting.
