Saint Cuthbert was a monk bishop associated with Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and after his death he became one of the most important medieval saints in northern England. Cuddy’s Cave is an overhanging outcrop of sandstone rock, and it is reputed that the monks of Lindisfarne brought Saint Cuthbert’s body here following Viking raids. This historic site is within an easy drive of Cuddy’s Rest. Belford is a small, friendly town where there are pubs, a tea room and a supermarket all within walking distance of Cuddy’s Rest. The small town of Wooler is situated 10 miles west of Belford and is a popular destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities. The challenging route of ’St Cuthbert’s Way’ runs close by. The quintessentially coastal village of Bamburgh with its impressive castle and stunning stretch of golden sands is only 6 miles east.
