About this property

17th century building in the Monts D'Arrée now a comfortable, dog-friendly, gîte

Priory is the name we have given to our largest gîte. Constructed in 1640 it is the oldest building in the local area but constructed in the same layout and style of others of the 17th century. It will appeal to those who want to holiday in Brittany with a real historic connection.
Priory has had many uses in its long history including being a weaver’s home; a presbytery and a farm house. We fully refurbished it in 2020 where we sought to retain much of the character of the original building including oak beams and exposed slate stonework while we giving it very modern standards of comfort to used for the perfect family home-from-home holiday accommodation.
Priory is entered from its large kitchen which includes a range cooker with 2 electric ovens and a gas hob; dishwasher; washing machine; microwave and large fridge freezer. There is a kitchen table for everyone to eat and a cloakroom with toilet and sink next to the kitchen.
From the kitchen, on the ground floor, you enter the double-height main living room where 3 chesterfield sofas are placed around the huge stone fireplace which houses a large wood burning stove for cosy evenings. A dining area with table and seating for 6 is in the main living space.
An ancient spiral stone staircase leads to the mezzanine level which has a magnificent four-poster king-sized (150 x 200 cm) bed and separate sofa and dressing area (there is also a modern staircase available!)
Also on the first floor is a second bedroom with king-sized (150 x 200 cm) bed with its own shower room and toilet, and the family bathroom with bath and over-bath shower.
The second floor has a twin bedroom with 2 single (90 x 180 cm) beds. A cot can be set up in any of the bedrooms or on the mezzanine level.
Priory has a large private terrace behind the property with hardwood garden furniture, sun loungers, parasol & BBQ. Wifi is available throughout Priory and it is dog friendly.
All of our guests at Kergudon have access to our many communal facilities.
These include a boot room with a range of wellington boots for you to borrow for walking in the forest; a washing machine (additional to the one in the gite) and a tumble dryer.
Our bike store has mountain bikes available to our guests free of charge; we have a pétanque (boule) pitch and family games room with pool table, babyfoot, electronic darts and a selection of games and books. The games room has a projector and large screen and can be reserved and used as a cinema for a family film night.
We also have a well equipped fitness suite so you can maintain your physical routine when you are with us - or you can start one! David, one of the owners, is a fully qualified Personal Trainer who can generate a program for you or give you fitness training, yoga or pilates.

We bought Kergudon at the end of 2014 and moved here from our hectic lives in south west London. We can barely believe this is the start of our 10th year here!
David is a sports coach and personal trainer who has continued teaching at a local gym as well as having private clients in Kergudon's own gym, both remotely (online) and in person. If you want to keep up with your fitness regime while on holiday, he is available to put you through your paces with a personalised fitness session!
Ben worked in finance in the city and now enjoys developing, improving and maintaining the properties.

Why they chose this property

Kergudon is perfectly situated to be your base to enjoy and explore this beautiful region.
We are situated in the rural, but active, village of Saint Cadou which itself is in the Parc naturel d'Armorique and the Monts D'Arrée with its amazing forests, hills and walks not to mention amazing starlit dark skies at night.
We are central to much of Finistère and equidistant from the north, west and south coasts allowing you to choose a different beach every day should you wish, and allowing you to return to the tranquillity of Kergudon each day and avoid the crowds of tourists on the coast. It also means, should it not be beach weather, you can explore the many interesting and historic towns and villages of Finistère just as easily.

What makes this property unique

Priory dates from the 17th century and is typical of the houses constructed at that time in this part of the world, we believe for weavers, but it has been used for a variety of purposes in its long history. The same style of building has become a museum in a neighbouring village and shows how Priory may have looked when first constructed in 1640.
Although recently modernised to provide fantastic holiday accommodation, Priory retains its charm and character including a stone spiral staircase and stunning, double-height living space.
