About this property

First & Last, Trimingham, Norfolk

First & Last is a very attractive mid terrace cottage, bursting with charm and beautifully decorated in a vintage country style. Set the a peaceful rural location of Trimmingham with fabulous open countryside views and close to the coast, this hideaway is a winner at any time of the year.

Everything about this cottage feels comfortable and cosy, and feels 'oh so relaxing' as soon as you walk in the door. The sitting room is as pretty as a picture and the well-equipped galley kitchen has a dining conservatory extension that leads into the sunny enclosed courtyard garden. Upstairs there are two bedrooms (a king-size and a full-size bunk room), a bathroom and a second sitting room, that rather takes you by surprise with its full size picture windows to make the most of the wonderful far reaching views across open countryside at the back of the cottage. This is a lovely place to sit and read, look through a pair of binoculars, or watch the sun go down with a glass of wine when the children are in bed.

First & Last is a perfect combination of a coastal retreat with a rural feel which will be enjoyed by small families, couples and friends, both in summer and winter. If you are not familiar with this part of Norfolk, give it a try, you will love it! Up to three well-behaved dogs are welcome at the cottage. The local beaches are dog friendly all year, and the popular beach cafe at nearby Overstrand is well worth a visit with easy access to the beach there.

Last and first

We enjoyed our week in our little cottage everything was there you needed and the decor and cosiness was good. Smaller than anticipated but never the less a real sweetie of a cottage. The neighbours were not friendly at all in the fact that they just looked straight through you but you can’t change that. All in all a good week.

Great location, with a well appointed home for your base as you discover North Norfolk

First and Last was a well appointed home, my family enjoyed our stay in this unique property. Located in a quiet end of lane location, this property is close to Cromer 15-20 minute drive, Great Yarmouth approx 1 hour. There is so much to do in North Norfolk, this was our first visit. We are a couple with a 2 year old and large dog. First and Last is well equipped with all the latest gadgets, the reading room is really special, my partner and child loved sitting in the room looking over at the field and wider views. The welcome pack had great suggestions for things to do, very well thought out. There is a local supermarket a short drive away and we enjoyed retreating back to our quiet rural location. Points to consider: Washing machine may need looking at, as after cycle completed the clothes were still quite wet. Whilst showering water does run along the bath and onto the floor. Finally sofas cushions were uncomfortable, they may need refreshing. In the garden some fencing to enclose the grass area would be good as I was worried that the dog may run in the field, so was not allowed of leash. None of the points to consider, impacted on the enjoyment of our holiday.

Charming cottage

We loved the cottage, the reading room and sunny kitchen diner. Very comfortable and beautifully light and well furnished. A couple of comments I would wish to make though, the stairs are steep and treads narrow, quite difficult for someone with mobility problems. The fire alarm too near the cooker, every time I opened the oven, it went off. We moved it for our stay! There is very little room round the king size bed and the person on the far side would have to climb over the bed to get out. Not sure how the cleaner manages to make that bed. What would be great, would be if they could fence off that bit of grass, the dog wanted to be out there but had to be on a lead, in case he wandered into next doors’ gardens.

First and Last

There were a few issues which require highlighting!!! It needs to be highlighted to the customer that: The stairs are are steep and would not suit older or very young The heating though satisfactory downstairs with wall heaters was not upstairs. The main bedroom was extremely cold there was no heating. The double bed had to be accessed by crawling over to one side to get in as there was no room around the bed on the one side. The stair gate did not fit the stair width. Should be noted that there are beams unsuitable for people over 5 foot ten inches. The keys were left in the windows in the reading room which could have been extremely dangerous if accessed by a child.

Nice cottage in quiet location

Nice bright cottage with stunning views courtesy of an upstairs sun room. Nice modern kitchen and extras like a dishwasher and washing machine. Comfy seating and bedrooms. Negatives were that the cottage could have been cleaner, we have dogs but there was quite a bit of dog fur on cushions etc. Also it is almost impossible to use the oven and hob without setting off the smoke alarm as it almost directly above the cooker and was sensitive to heat.

Lots of maintenance issues

We had lots of issues with the cottage. Norfolk Hideaways tried their best to help. The final straw was when poor plumbing (the maintenance guys words not ours) caused the toilet to come away from the soil pipe emptying sewage all over the bathroom floor at 11:30pm leaving us no toilet facilities overnight. The worst holiday experience ever!! This was preceded by leaking windows, broken clothes drier and a few other issues.

Disappointed

We arrived at 1540 after a 3 hour journey to find a car in the drive. I went inside and shouted that we were early and was informed by a voice that she was cleaning and would be 20 minutes. We went and drove around a bit, came back and waited in the drive of an empty house opposite. The cleaner left around 1610/1615, drove straight past us, if she'd just stopped and said something it would have helped, a quick sorry was running late or something, but nothing. Not a good start. We attempted to make a bacon sandwich, using the hob, which we gave up on - I am rubbish with these, but my husband's not and we just couldn't get it going. Decided to use the grill, only to find out when you do that the smoke alarm comes on and won't go off. Was pretty noisy and annoying! After that we only used the microwave. The sofa was uncomfortable and lumpy and the chair smelt strongly of dogs. I appreciate the property accepts dogs, but the furniture doesn't need to really smell of them! TV worked, but not great, wasn't particularly clean, large bed was really uncomfortable and basically we were meant to stay for 4 nights and left after 2. We have stayed in a lot of cottages and never left before, very disappointed!!!! Also we really never complain about a property and was such a shame, Overstrand was lovely and the beach and hoped to get to Holt, but that never happened.

Cottage was NOT CLEAN, Aptly named as First and Last time we will use. Hideaways apt name cleaner

First and Last cottage Trimingham On arrival we were very disappointed in the overall cleanliness of the property and of some areas in particular. The kitchen floor, worktops, kitchen cupboard door handles and the dining table were not clean as were the oven door and the oven/grill tray. The sink dish drying rack was mouldy and two of the saucepans had food residue on them and the dish drying towel was badly stained. We had to clean all the kitchen surfaces with numerous Dettox wipes that evening of arrival (after a 10 hour car journey). We phoned the Hideaways office soon after arrival but could only leave a message as the office was closed. The kitchen hob was an induction hob which we attempted to use that evening but whatever saucepan we tried to use the hob refused to recognise them. We had also brought our own wok but the hob would not even recognise that. The hob appears not to have been working for some time as the last review of the cottage on the Hideaways website on March 2020 stated that the hob was unusable then. Even Hideaways guide in the cottage warns that the pans were temperamental, could play up and suggested different pans should be tried. In the lounge all the tables and the television cabinet were covered in dust and the sofa seat cushions were stained. The floor below the sofa and chairs was covered in dust but I did not notice this until day five when hoovering the rug. In the bathroom the bath tiling was mouldy, the bottom of the shower curtain was mouldy with a few black hairs. The shower curtain was hanging precariously by only one ceiling fitting , the other had been pulled out and was missing. This made the shower difficult to use. My husband phoned Hideaways the next morning and spoke to Laura. He told here about the lack of cleanliness, the shower curtain and the problem with the hob. She was apologetic and arranged for a cleaner to come to the cottage later that morning. We left the mouldy dish rack, dirty pans and the oven tray out on the kitchen worktop and the oven door open for the cleaner to see but on returning after a day out we found that these items were completely untouched. The only difference in the whole house was the shower curtain had been replaced but the shower curtain rail was still hanging precariously by one ceiling fitting. I think was day 3 that I phoned Laura again to say that the induction hob was still not working. On day 4 an electrician arrived, tried the hob, declared it faulty and replaced it. On the positive side the bedroom was ok, the bedding and towels were spotless and the upstairs second sitting room was in very good order What we found most shocking and disturbing was the poor cleanliness of all the surfaces mentioned above, If they were not clean of dirt or dust then they were certainly not covid clean. As an example we simply took Dettox wipes and wiped all the light switches and door handles and ended up with dirty wipes. We are both 70 and believe at that age we have a certain vulnerability to covid and take it in good faith that holiday properties we go to are thoroughly cleaned and safe. it would have nice if someone from hideaways had contacted use during our stay to see if we were happy with what was done Over the past 20 years we have stayed at 3 or 4 cottages/lodges per year in various English counties and this is the first we have not given a positive favorable review. Maybe we should have been concerned when the last Hideaways review for the cottage was 18 months ago.

Lovely holiday cottage...well equipped..lovely view from reading room

Cottage well equipped and comfortable. Shower curtain needs attention as handing off wall and mould round bath needs cleaning off. Induction hob was has work..either didn't work at all with the pans provided or kept going on and off!!...enjoyed our stay though and saw lots of lovely places. There is no shop pub it beach within walking distance so the blurb was a bit misleading..maybe needs updating. A good cottage to look round that part of Norfolk.

Just a few niggley complaints as overall we had a pleasant stay. * The stairs are very narrow. * The patio doors not clean. *Drain smell in Kitchen and bathroom. *Sofa and chair uncomfortable. *TV worked when it wanted to. Connection problem. *Upstairs lounge- very hot. Good points. Generally very clean. The beds were very comfy. Good WiFi. All the equipment you'd ever need. Quite a good location. Enclosed outside patio with dining area good. Easy parking at front.

A quaint cottage in peaceful location with good parking

First and last is a comfortable cottage with a nice homely feel, the outdoor space is nice and a beautiful upstairs sitting room with lovely views, the bathroom could do with some updating, shower is not suitable at all, but it’s all clean. The communication from Norfolk hideaways wasn’t great, I was informed there was no travel cot when there was one at the property and I had asked if there was a beach in walking distance and was told there was, the beach at Trimingham is a 20 min walk and a scramble down a cliff edge so not good for young children. I imagine the coastal path walk is nice though. There is a bus stop at the end of the road if you don’t want to drive, we took the bus to Maudsley which was nice, Overstrand is lovely too and only 10 min drive (or I think you can walk along coastal path) There is no pub in the village so if you’re after a nice quiet location and don’t mind driving this is a nice place.

Disappointed

After waiting 18 mths we finally arrived here, bedroom tiny meaning one has to climb over partner to get out of bed. Chair and settee really uncomfortable, smoke alarm directly over oven door so every time you use oven, alarm goes off. TV a pain to turn on. Lovely little house, perfect location, but sadly failed slightly in every department. Really disappointed

Lovely, peaceful place

This was an excellent place to stay; quiet and remote with lots of walks right from the doorstep, near a sandy beach and with a West facing sunset view. My only gripe is that there was one toilet roll for a week's stay for a family of four. Because of covid, we did our usual weekly shop and brought provisions with us but as there was very little toilet roll we needed to top that up. So overall highly recommended accommodation but bring your own loo roll!

Beautiful cottage

In a great location for coastal walks, it was cosy and warm and had everything we needed except for a hairdryer! The reading room was delightful as were the views over the fields from there and the dining room. We struggled with the hob and pans as we decided to eat in in the evening and for breakfast. It’s super sensitive and we ended up using the microwave a lot. The oven worked very well!! Lovely haven during a strange time in the world! Thank you!!

Windy weekend break

Booked this cottage quite last minute really, arrived on the Friday night, took us a few drives up and down the lane to find it in the dark. Was not anything spectacular from the outside but the inside was lovely, very clean and fresh looking with beautiful decor. Everything was spotlessly clean and felt comfortable immediately. Lovely long kitchen opening out onto a patio which I would imagine would be a real sun trap in the summer. The best thing about the place was the upstairs reading room which was lovely to sit in overlooking the field behind, again would be lovely in the summer. The weather wasn’t great ( storm Ciara was around!) but we managed to get out and about walking, however due to cliff erosion at that time , you couldn’t walk on the coastal path from the cottage which was a shame so we did have to drive elsewhere. Only criticisms I would have was we found the tv a bit of a faff with the controls and so too the halogen hob but maybe that was just us! All in all a lovely stay!

We are both into are late sixties and bed time we didn't have room the bed was far to big for room

Wasn't good value every time we tried to use the cooker or toaster the smoke alarm went off bought our food out.We found the stairs very steep and with the toilet upstairs it became quite a chore,The handrail finished short at least three steps from the top.

Lovely getaway

Cottage is very sweet, a good size for 2 possibly a bit small for 4 especially if taking dogs. Well equipped, though we had difficulties with the induction hob and saucepans which needed to be absolutely central to work. Loved the reading room, especially good to watch the sunsets over the fields. As minimal light pollution, great for star gazing too.

Beautiful cottage, superb for dogs

There are many, many great things about this cottage: easy parking, huge comfy bed; wonderful glass dining room and first-floor sunroom/reading room that is not overlooked and enjoys beautiful sunsets. Cleanliness of floors was excellent, I know that sounds a silly thing but I can’t bear crunchy feet! The decor was modern, neutral and appealing. There is Netflix and Freesat. The road is very quiet. The property accepts up to 3 dogs and is excellent for them, with a fully enclosed patio that leads to a small but safe grassed area. I particularly appreciated the lack of draconian rules over dogs, the only stipulation is that there should be no evidence of them when you leave - fair enough! There are safe country walks from the doorstep. They even provide dog towels. Some minor downsides: whoever sleeps on the right has to climb over the person on the left to get out of bed. There were a few minor issues with kitchen cleanliness which Norfolk Hideaways assure me will be resolved for future guests. The over-bath electric shower is adequate but not brilliant. Trimingham is coastal but there is no way down to the beach, so you have to drive to Mundesley or Overstrand. Tall people might not be very comfy at First and Last. We are both 5’8” and we were about as tall as you could be to use the shower comfortably and not have to duck to avoid the beams, especially going upstairs. I would wholeheartedly recommend First and Last Cottage.

A great base to explore the Norfolk coast

a great quiet base from which to explore...Cliff Top cafe at Overstrand perfect for Breakfast and more. Fish n Fry at Mundlesey super quality food and try the burgers next door (same owner) and not your typical burger! Also at Mundlesey is a Teco express. Cromer is nearby and an M&S food store in nearby North Walsham. The cottage is very clean and has a fantastic reading room with an outlook across the fields. Would recommend...our first stay with NorfolkHideaways, but won't be our last.
