Traveling with the family or taking time for yourself, you'll love coming home to this beautiful home. Three bedrooms each with their own ensuite custom marble bathroom. Just a short walk to the Makuu cliffs to watch the whales go by. The Asian inspired decor is stunning. I have collected art throughout Asia and you are sure to enjoy the many carvings and paintings. The "Man Cave" has a giant flat screen TV, pool table, dart board and more. The home is on one acre and I live in a cottage on property. The landscaped property has many fruit trees for you to "pick" from. I have bikes for your use to explore the area. The home is located in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. Centrally located to the airport, 20 minutes, lava flow 30 minutes and Volcano National Park 30 minutes.

Spacious, clean, furnished "home" located in quiet area. Host very responsive to inquiries and requests. Fully furnished with sports equipment. Property full of fauna that produces fruit (albeit we were there at low season) One drawback - house is located some time from Hilo (depending on traffic) so plan your excurstions accordingly
The property was stunning. The ocean is only a few minute walk which we all enjoyed after dinner. The view and ocean sounds from the lanai was wonderful anytime of the day. The Weber grill made it perfect for grilling dinner every night. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms in each bedroom were large. My wife likes to bird and there were no shortage of birds on the property. There are no negatives to say only positives. We truly enjoyed our stay and would choose to stay here again if we return to the big island. Thank you Howard for the wonderful hospitality.
This property was perfect!! Close enough to everything while keeping us out of the busy tourist areas. The home was clean and cozy. Howard was away for the holiday. But, left us with contact info and a binder full of his island favorites. We particularly appreciated the instructions left by him that took us to the Puna trail, which led us to a private(ish) beach. There, we got to view the sea turtles soaking up the sun. We loved staying here, and plan on returning again in there future! Mahalo Howard!!
We had such a wonderful time at this home! It was incredibly spacious, giving our whole family plenty of room to relax and enjoy ourselves. The place was spotless, and the attention to detail made it feel comfortable and inviting. The open layout allowed us to gather and spend quality time together, and we loved how close it was to all the beautiful spots in Hilo. It truly felt like a home away from home, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a clean, spacious, and fun stay with family!
family!!
It was nicely nestled close to Maku’u point and plenty of fruit to eat in property. Spacious home perfect for family with older kids or multiple adults.
House was great, plenty of room. Lots of fun things for the family, bikes, pool table, etc.. Nice to know host was close but didn't need anything. House is not far from the coast which is nice, bit of a drive to store, etc..Very quiet and peaceful, especially in the mornings on the big deck.

Liked: Check-in, listing accuracy
Disliked: Location
May 2024: Concerns with property
The positives: listing was accurate. Man-cave is renovated garage and has many activities and items to borrow for outdoor lifestyle.
Serious considerations: No air conditioning (I should have confirmed before renting). Washer / dryer outside of home which added to bugs getting in house. There is a cockroach infestation in one of the upper bedrooms. Hundreds of them come in through bathroom light in ceiling at dusk. We had to close bathroom door and not use bathroom. This issue is not just living in Hawaii, this is a serious problem for the home. The hammock rope broke (very old and frayed) and my husband fell and hurt his hip when the rope snapped in use. Black mold in two ceiling areas in garage. Master bedroom is room off garage and was not clean (like it had not been fully dusted in a long time. Screens for doors and windows had tears, or did not set in tracks correctly when closing, which let more bugs in the house. Fire alarms disabled (one in bedroom was gone with wires hanging out of wall).
We had a tournament in Hilo so we decided to stay at another location close to Hilo since we’ve recently stayed in Hilo. The location was great! 2-3 minute mile ride to wonderful beach views. The house was big and spacious! Every room had its own private full bath and balcony! The amenities were great, from the game room to the snorkel gear to the bikes provided! There was a Sunday market no more than 8 minutes away that was great! All in all if I come back to the big island I’m staying here again.
Everything was good here we really enjoyed our stay very spacious rooms and fruit trees on property. Owner lives on land too but it’s separated by a fence, and he’s great with helping out
Amazing property. Unfortunately didn’t get a chance to meet Howard, but he was around if we had needed him. A lot of love and hard work put into the house. A lot of fun adventuring around the yard looking for fruit. Zero complaints.
The property is stunning and well kept. Gorgeous artwork and the energy of the place is so calming. It was a perfect spot for our family after watching our son dance at Merrie Monarch. Fun to go on a bike ride and play darts while on property. We will be back when we have time to enjoy the Big Island. Mahalo Uncle Howard for sharing your gorgeous home.
This house was perfect for our family of 4. My kids enjoyed playing in the yard and looking for ripe fruit. We used all the fun amenities during our stay with family dart games, bike rides and pool games. The kitchen was very well stocked which made it great for cooking and eating dinner out on the deck. The house was very well kept and super clean and tidy. The drive to Hilo and volcano park was easy. Nice short bike ride to a beautiful ocean view and great whale watching spot. Icing on the cake was the little treats left for us by Howard. During our visit to Hawaii we stayed on both the Kona and Hilo side and this home blew us away and definitely made us feel like we were in paradise and would love to stay, which we did not get that same feeling from the place on the Kona side. 10/10 would recommend. Mahalo Howard!
We loved our stay at Howard's home. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The host checked in and tried to help when there were internet issues on the island. There is a lot of living space and multiple couples or a larger family could comfortably stay at the house. The kitchen had most essentials for cooking. The hawaiian coffee and chocolates were a nice touch.
Great house that makes you wanna actually live there
Our family of 6 stayed there for a week. Our main focus on the trip was exploring the nature so the location was perfect. Equal distance to both the national park and Mauna Kea, and being not so far from the airport was very ideal. Howard’s place was so comfortable that we decided to just enjoy the place playing pool and relaxing in the yard. Howard was so easy to communicate with too. Thank you Howard for such a nice place and some background story of the house!
We were there for 7 days and enjoyed every minute of it. Howard is a wonderful host. We never ask for anything but I believe that if we had he would have tried to get it for us. If we ever go back to Hawaii we will try to stay there again.
Thank you Howard.

About the host
Hosted by Howard Grant
My name is Howard and I am a contractor on the Big Island. I built this home for myself and 2 sons. The house was a labor of love and did almost all the work myself. My sons are now grown and have families of their own and I felt that it was time to share my home with other travelers. I live in a cottage on the back of the property so I can give my guests privacy when they need it and assistance with questions or issues that may come up. I want to make sure your time on the Big Island is special.
Why they chose this property
This area is the "sunshine belt" of the East side. Walking distance to the ocean and some great fishing spots. Mostly its quiet and private.
What makes this property unique
Each bedroom has its own custom bath. I bought most of the tiles and cabinetry and art during my travels in Asia.
