About this property

Rustic Cabin on Private Pond in Stratton Vermont Close to Stratton Ski Area

This cozy Cabin on Private Pond is available for rental all year round.

The Cole Cabin is located in the town of Stratton next to a private three quarters of an acre pond at 1700 feet on a quiet picturesque dead-end dirt road just below the Stratton Mountain ski resort, which is roughly one and one-half miles away. It sits on property and shares a driveway with the Cole House (also listed on VRBO).

Rustic & Comfortable.
Warm and friendly, this is a cozy dwelling, comfortably furnished.

The one-person stand-up kitchen has a stainless steel sink, dishwasher, smooth-top electric range, coffee-maker, microwave, toaster and a refrigerator. The log living room has a view of the pond and is cheered by a brick fireplace with an Avalon wood burning fireplace insert. Gas heat is available when needed. For dining, there is a locally made free form pine slab table.

There are two bathrooms in the cabin, one in the master bedroom and one in back of the fireplace with a shower big enough to hold two people. Across from the shower is a separate lavatory.

In the hallway leading from the living area to the master bedroom are two double-sized bunks. The master bedroom with a queen bed has its own bath with shower. Upstairs are games and a TV with DVD player. The Cole Cabin is provided with a wired access point that provides wireless or wired high-speed internet service. There is also a DVD player and cable TV.

Note for summer guests: The Cole Cabin does not have air conditioning, but is rather like an old fashioned summer place (though it is a year-round insulated house), and has fans including a bedroom ceiling fan. The evenings in Vermont tend to drop down into the fifties or low 60s during the summer. In front of the Cabin is a patio facing the pond. The patio has a table, adirondack chairs and a propane fired grill for barbecuing.

Note for Winter Guests: This a year-round fully insulated dwelling. Rent the cabin for a month, for the season or for a holiday week.

A Private Pond.
Summer:
The three quarter acre country pond offers refreshing swimming and recreation. In the summer, a rowboat is provided for fun. The grassy banks of the pond provide safe and easy entry into the water; it is a great place to enjoy the sun on a hot day. A screened gazebo graces the far shore.

Winter:
During the winter, the pond can be used for skating. The land around the cabin is available for snow shoeing and cross country skiing.

The cabin is still available for Nov-February for the 2024 - 25 ski season.

Lots to Do Nearby.
For a good hike, you can take the Long Trail which winds it way through the back of Stratton Mountain. From the cabin, it is a pleasant hike or a short drive to a waterfall at Pikes Falls, a beautiful rocky place for diving, sun bathing and hiking as well as a cool dip. The water is very cold even in the late August. Within a few miles, up at the Stratton ski area or down in the valley, are good eating places. There are country auctions, fairs, antiques and within a half an hour's drive, concerts and summer theatre in Weston and Dorset.

Rental Details:
The Cabin can be rented most of the time. If you are interested in renting the Cole Cabin for more than a month, contact the owner for a special discounted rate. The Cole Cabin can also be rented for the ski season or partial ski season. The minimum rental is five nights and this Winter it is still available for November-February.

Wonderful cabin and pond

We had such a fabulous time at the Cole Cabin. My Deaf and autistic son and his Golden Retriever dog spent many hours swimming in the pond. The cabin is rustic, reminded me of my own grandparents’ place on Lake Carey PA many years ago. We absolutely loved our time here

Rustic!

It's charming and convenient to a lot of regional attractions and an amazing swimming hole. The pond on the property is... Less attractive, but your stay won't suffer for it. Bring your bug spray, and note that there's no air conditioning.

Old log cabin with additions. Quaint and cozy. Plenty of room for the 4 of us. Nice yard and pond.

Small spaces but welcoming for a family to spend quality time together. Everything included makes it convenient. Internet was inconsistently working for 2 I-phones and a laptop usage. It had rained a lot during our stay so we couldn’t enjoy the back patio. It was also very hot and humid and only had one movable fan to use plus a ceiling fan in the bedroom. But overall very comfortable and charming. We enjoyed our stay and we were able to do a lot of sightseeing locally.

A serene oasis

If you are looking for a cozy cabin experience in serene and quiet surroundings, this is the place for you. I cannot say enough about how lovely it is sitting by the pond for hours and enjoying the sound of the birds and breeze through the trees. I miss it already. Jeremy offered a kind welcome when I arrived and a tour of the property. A perfect week away!

The location is convenient to many wonderful activities (hiking, etc.), and every drive, no matter how close or far, is breathtakingly scenic. Jeremy is very helpful and communicative. I'll definitely try to come back with my family.

Perfect, quiet getaway

The cabin was rustic & charming; we had everything we needed there. I was delighted to find some herbs growing in a little bed outside the kitchen, which I used for cooking. The pond and property are very pretty, and the location is great- not far from hiking trails, restaurants, shopping, and scenic drives everywhere you go. The owner was very friendly & helpful.

Great little rustic cabin on the mountain side. A perfect base for hiking.

It was a great, rustic and small cabin nested onto a very quite road off Stratton mountain. A great place to explore all the wonderful hiking nearby. The owner, Jeremy lives up the road and is very helpful.

Cozy Cabin

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cozy cabin, located in the beautiful and peaceful setting of Stratton Mountain. Full of character and compact, the cabin is well appointed and comfortable. We enjoyed eating leisurely meals outside, reading in the gazebo by the pond, and touring the area from this idyllic spot.

Cozy well-located cabin near Stratton’s Sun Bowl

Owner Jeremy Cole greeted us, showed us how everything works in and around the cabin... including the pond in the backyard that doubles as a perfect skating rink (once the snow is shoveled). Small kitchen is well equipped, very hot showers, one double bed and two bunk beds (can sleep four comfortably). Well heated (including a fireplace/stove). WiFi helpful too. Short drive to Stratton’s Sun Bowl (3 minutes). We shall return!!

Wanderlust weekend at the Cole cabin

My son and I recently had a most enjoyable and relaxing stay at the Cole cabin. We felt as if we were the only inhabitants for miles! The cabin was comfortably set-up for guests and we felt very much at home there. It’s proximity to the base of Stratton Mountain was most convenient (a mile and a half or so), but the cabin truly seemed as if it were tucked away in the wilderness. It was very welcoming of Jeremy to stop by the cabin on Friday morning to introduce himself and drop off an extra set of keys. We would love to return the this “little piece of heaven” sometime in the future. Five stars ***** Scott and Nolan - father and son “yogi” team

Charming cabin on a pond

We loved the proximity to Stratton, Manchester and all of their respective activities. The cabin offered access to a swimming pond and brook, which is great for kids who are on the lookout for frogs, tadpoles, and salamanders. The cabin offered the basic amenities, which was nice. The owner was very prompt in providing us information and instructions were clearly labelled within the cabin from heating to garbage disposal. We would definitely rent the cabin again for a long weekend!

Peaceful, rustic, easy.

Met by Jeremy and learned the history of the cabin and took a quick tour of the property. We love being in the woods and staying in rustic cabins, so this was perfect. Also, rustic doesn't mean bare, it had everything we needed. We were looking to disconnect - play card games, go hiking (Hamilton Falls was a nice 6-mile hike), BBQ, break out the guitar, do a little factory outlet shopping. We did all that and had a blast. We could have gone swimming but it was a little chilly and we simply ran out of time so we never took the row boat for a ride. It was a great trip and we'll likely do it again next year. And next year we'll go out to Bromley to play at the aerial park.

a cozy, well-appointed cabin in an excellent location

My husband and I loved our time in the Cole Cabin. Jeremy's directions to the cabin were very specific and helpful, and he was very personable. It is possible that not everyone would like such a small, rustic cabin, but we loved it. It was equipped with everything one could need. The location is also very convenient for those who like hiking. We went on five different day hikes in different locales, all within a drive of no more than 40 minutes at most from the cabin. The property itself is beautiful. The patio, the pond (with rowboat), the gazebo, the babbling brook--all wonderful for those who love the beauty of Vermont. It was also wonderfully quiet; there were no outside noises to disturb us at all.

A well cared for home full of history

We Stayed July 11-16th of 2017. The home is well appointed with all featured in solid working order. Everything was clean and orderly to allow us to fully appreciate the setting unlike some places we have stayed where we had to pre-wash the dishes to use them. The also has tons of great local and national history. There are books in the house that allow you to explore that further. We traveled to other towns on day trips and spent other days bike riding the local roads. Drivers were courteous and mindful. We made the long walk to the Ski village of Stratton to have meals and drinks. Keep in mind that summer are REALLY slow and many placed were not open. There is always a place to grab a beer though! Overall, great place to catch up on The Good Life.

Delightful Vermont

We were attending a wedding at Stratton mountain and wanted something close to the event yet welcoming to our two dogs. This is a warmly inviting log cabin especially quiet with a lovely pond. The hosts were particularly gracious to our two small dogs and provided everything we needed for our stay.

Quant, Quiet, & Quality!!

My husband, Frank, I, and our dog Bobby absolutely loved staying in the Cole Cabin. Upon arrival, Jeremy showed us the cabin, property, and a lay of local conveniences & attractions. Our stay was a very peaceful 7 evening retreat. We enjoyed visiting Pike Falls, Bromely Mt's Arial Adventure Park, and going on a Beer tour through VT. The Cole Cabin had plenty of room for our needs, but still a great cozy cabin feel. The utility room added to the cabin was a perfect spot for wet paws & storage, so we could enjoy the entire cabin. The amenities are true to their word; we has sufficient cellular signal (Verizon) and WiFi provided from the Cole House. I cannot give any higher recommendations on this vacation destination. The Cole Cabin WILL be a yearly retreat for us. Thank you so much for the opportunity for this experience!!!

About the host

Hosted by Jeremy Cole

Host profile image
I grew up in the Cole Cabin and the Cole House. Stratton was started by my mother, Malvine Cole, who was often called the Mother of Stratton Mountain. I learned to ski on the hillside near the Cabin and the House as well as at Bromley, Stratton and Mount Snow, the three ski areas in the area. I took over ownership in 1997.

Why they chose this property

The Cole Cabin offers an old style of vacation that is quiet, private and away from it all in the backwoods of Vermont, but it is also close to the Stratton Ski Area and other places of interest in Southern Vermont. This is a warm, friendly, and cozy dwelling that some guests refer to as a hobbit house.

The Cole Cabin was originally built out of logs cut down with hand saws the old fashioned way and then transported to the cabin site with horses, where they were placed on top each other and chinked.

What makes this property unique

Quiet, private with old fashioned charm.

A 3/4 acre pond that has been recently cleaned out and re-landscaped with its own rowboat and access is a special part of the Cole Cabin experience. Young children are especially attracted to the pond with its many water creatures (frogs, salamanders, fish).

A brook flows on the back of the property.

If you like to hike, you can drive to the other side of Stratton and access the Long Trail as well as a trail that leads to the Stratton fire tower.

The Stratton Resort is very close, but you are not a part of it, so you get the convenience of being close, but are away from the noise and congestion. It takes seven minutes to drive up to the ski area.

Pikes Falls is two miles down the road, which means you can take a leisurely walk to it or be there in minutes if you drive down to it.

Manchester is 20 minutes away, the Vermont Country Store is another 20 minute drive. Brattleboro is 45 minutes away.
