One of the best experiences of my life

This property is in a little town in Northern Italy that we chose so we could get to Trieste, Venice, Croatia and Slovenia all is less than one hour driving. The accommodations were so authentic and very well appointed. We loved the small village, the restaurants there as well as the winery. We will definitely stay there again when we return to Italy. We all loved the home and the people that ran it. Such a beautiful and safe environment.

Verliebt in Strassoldo

Perfect setting for exploring the wine country!

The rice mill house was perfect for our group of three couples. Everyone had their own bed and bath plus a huge living room and adquate kitchen for breakfast. The outdoor space in the garden was particulary nice.

Wonderful stay

We had a wonderful time at the Pileria in Strassoldo! The house, the garden, the very cosy beds, the tasteful furniture, the sounds of the well and the birds. And of course the very good communication with the most lovely hosts who fulfilled every wish. Thank you very much!

Perfect Authentic Italy Get Away

Wonderful, unique (in the best way) stay. The Rice Mill exceeded our expectations. It was clean, cool, and larger than expected. We expected it to be a bit hot, but between the air conditioner and stone building, it was cool on the hottest day of the summer. Gabriella speaks perfect English, and was a wonderful, communicating host. The place is situated close to many great spots, including a train ride to Venice or Triest. Highly recommend!

Tolle Unterkunft

A Gorgeous,Tranquil Retreat, Full of History and Character

Ten of our family and friends spent a week at Castello Strassoldo, which is a gorgeous property that Gabriella has lovingly restored and maintained. We rented both the Rice Mill and Casa la Vicinia. All of our guests loved their rooms - which were beautifully decorated and featured well-appointed private bathrooms. Because of a recent local zoning change, one of the bedrooms in Casa la Vicinia was unable to be used, so Gabriella kindly offered the Tower Room in the castle. Our two friends who shared that space were blown away by its beauty. It also had a sitting room and a huge walk-in shower. They truly raved about it! Our friend who stayed in Casa La Vicinia was impressed with her lodging, and wished she could stay the entire week. We cooked and spent most of our group time at dinner in the Rice Mill, which was a wonderful space to spread out and enjoy our time together. The outdoor patio also was lovely, and overlooked gorgeous grounds and a pond. There were birds, butterflies and flowers everywhere! One of the last nights of our stay was our wedding anniversary. Gabriella offered to cater our celebration, and she and Nidia spent two days preparing our wonderful meal. She offered the use of the castle main room and patio, which she decorated with fresh-cuts flowers and candles. It was gorgeous! The food was delicious, and Tomasz made lovely prosecco cocktails. Gabriella typically does not cater events, so this was a very generous gesture - especially because she had hurt her back earlier that week and was in considerable pain. Grazie, Gabriella! Nidia was wonderful, and our main contact at the Rice Mill. She is a warm, caring and helpful person. She helped make our stay memorable - especially because she bonded so closely with my mother-in-law, who grew up in Trieste and was returning to this region for the first time in more than 50 years. Castello Strassoldo is a very special place, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to other travelers. You will experience a true piece of Italy, with genuine, warm, hospitality.

Truly special and spectacular!

We spent 5 glorious days at La Pileria in Strassoldo and can't speak highly enough about the whole experience. Having left there a week ago, we haven't stopped talking about it. The grounds of the Castello are breathtaking, the bedrooms and living space at La Pileria were spacious, comfortable and beautifully appointed, the coffee and breakfasts that were served every morning were delicious, and most of all our wonderful hosts, Gabriella and the lovely Needia were so warm and welcoming. My parents (both in their 70's and seasoned travelers) commented that Strassoldo is one of the most incredible places they have ever been - a truly once in a lifetime experience - though we very much hope to return one day to share with other friends and family. Thank you to Gabriella for making such a wonderful and unique property available and thank you to Needia for taking such good care of us during our stay.

Marvelous

What a wonderful and serene place! Everything has been renovated with great care. The rooms are very large and beautifully decorated; each room has its own bathroom with modern appliances. The breakfast buffet was set very nicely, the food was delicious, and we appreciated the nice porcelain and table covers. It's all done very tastefully. The whole tower has a powerful AC. You notice it only when you realize how pleasantly cool it is inside while it's 40 C outside. And then the gardens, those wonderful gardens with a little stream going through it! It is truly a place to feel like royalty.

BEAUTIFUL HISTORIAL CASTLE

The Rice Mill and Castle complex was incredibly beautiful, the photos don't do it justice. The old stonework, beams, furnishings take you back into time. The property is newly renovated very well maintained and exceptionally clean. The service was excellent, we arrived late in the evening and asked if they could provide breakfast food for the following morning, we woke up to an amazing spread of Italian meats, cheese, bakery goods, cereals, etc. Would highly recommend staying and would return if every in that part of Italy again. Thank you Gabriella and your staff for making our stay memorable!

A home away from home!

Our stay at the Rice Mill more than exceeded our expectations. The Castile de Strassoldo was a beautiful place. The gardens were spectacular. We are very thankful to Nedea who greeted us and baked us a delicious loaf of bread in the morning (not to mention teaching our daughter how to make it). We had a very relaxing time while at the Castle. There was so much to explore in the area (wineries, beaches, ruins, etc). We loved visiting the local supermarket each morning. We hope to return some day. Thank you to Gabrielle for sharing her home with us!

FANTAAAAASTIC!!!!!!!!!!

We travel a lot throughout Europe and stay at various places - hotels, condos, houses, etc. and rarely get as much as surprised, not to mention excited. However, this property is just something out of a dream book. Not only this is a romantic historical property beautifully rebuilt from its medieval past, but it is marvelously and tastefully furnished, spotlessly clean and just - for a lack of words I just have to repeat myself - fantastic. On the top of all, the gracious and friendly host is anxious to offer any assistance (e.g. information, bikes, tour of the castle) to make your stay. To sum this all up: We loved every minute of our stay and certainly will return in the future.

An unforgettable experience

The Rice Mill and the whole Strassoldo Castle are a wonderful unforgettable place to stay. The property is spectacular and very unique. We travel frequently, renting 2-4 different homes every year. This is definitely one of the most memorable ones we have ever stayed at. The owner is very hospitable and welcoming. The accommodations are spectacular. The bedrooms are very large, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The bathrooms are modern. We were able to eat all out meals outside in the gardens, which are very well maintained, relaxing and charming. It is a very peaceful serene place perfect for a relaxing vacation. We were a group of 9, including 5 children, and even our youngest kids could tell this was a very unique place. Not to mention that they thought it was a really cool thing to stay in a castle. I would recommend this property for pretty much anyone: it can be a very grown up getaway or a family place.

About the host

Hosted by Williams di Strassoldo Gabriella

Host profile image
The castle of Strassoldo represents the heart of my life. Since childhood, when I lived abroad and came here on holiday to visit my grandparents, this magical place has fascinated me. Over the years, that childlike enchantment transformed into a deep sense of responsibility towards this millennial heritage.

When I began the restoration journey, many buildings in the complex were complete ruins - the rice-husking mill, the tower, the men-at-arms houses, the vicinia, the new kitchen. I even decided to buy back the chancellery, which had been sold by my grandfather, not because I needed more roofs to restore, but to preserve the historic integrity, as the Chancellery risked being turned into a beer hall.

I often hear people tell me how lucky I am to live in a castle. I smile and reply that the real fortune was having the determination to save it.
It has been relentless work, often going against the tide and without external support, but the passion for this place - and perhaps the positive spirit of my ancestors that lingers in the air - have given me the strength to persevere.

I have always insisted on philologically correct restorations, using natural materials and traditional techniques. My vision has been to preserve the authentic soul of the castle, not to create an artificial version. Every restored building tells a story of dedication and respect for history.

Today, seeing guests appreciate this authenticity and breathe in the castle's atmosphere is my greatest satisfaction. Your stay here helps keep this extraordinary historical heritage alive for future generations.

I wish you an unforgettable experience in this place that is so special to me and my family.

Why they chose this property

Step into a Thousand Years of History: Welcome to the Strassoldo di Sopra castle

Imagine walking through a medieval borgo where time stands still - this is the heart of Strassoldo, one of Italy's most beautiful villages, built around twin castles (di Sopra e di Sotto) that have been our family's home for over a millennium. Here, authenticity isn't just preserved; it's lived daily within ancient walls that whisper centuries of stories.

Nestled in the heart of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Strassoldo sits at a magical crossroads where Italian, Austrian, and Slavic cultures merge. This unique heritage comes alive in every corner: from the architectural details of our historic buildings to the flavors of our local cuisine, each element tells a story of cultural fusion.

Our centuries-old gardens and our neighbors’ surrounding vineyards create an enchanting backdrop for your stay.
From this privileged position, you're perfectly placed to explore the region's treasures: bask on the golden beaches of Grado, walk through the ancient Roman ruins of UNESCO-listed Aquileia, savor wines at prestigious local wineries, or discover the elegant cities of Udine and Trieste.

In Strassoldo, you're not just visiting history - you're living it.

What makes this property unique

Casa Artuico holds a unique magic: imagine staying in what was once the guards' residence of an ancient castle, belonging to the same family for over a thousand years - an extraordinary rarity in the European landscape. This millennial historical continuity makes the experience even more authentic, as guests stay in a castle complex that is not only preserved in time but still alive and inhabited by descendants of the same noble family.

The uniqueness of this residence lies in its dual soul: on one hand, it offers a living experience in one of Italy's most beautiful historic villages, on the other, it's strategically located to explore an incredibly rich and varied territory. It's a meeting point of different cultures - Italian, Austrian, and Slavic - reflected in the architecture, cuisine, and local traditions.

The true luxury of Casa Artuico lies in its authenticity: it's not a tourist reconstruction, but a piece of history expertly restored, part of a family heritage passed down through centuries. Guests can enjoy the privacy of their own enclosed garden while having access to the castle's magnificent park, a rare privilege that allows them to experience aristocratic life of bygone times. The house is located in a territory where history meets nature, where you can alternate visits to UNESCO sites with tastings at renowned wineries, beach days with walks in nearby nature sites
