Built in the 1920s by the artist and embroiderer Ann Macbeth, High Bield is a remarkable house which was completely refurbished a few years ago. It was built high on the fell and takes in views of Brotherswater and Ullswater and offers walking from the door to High St, Helvellyn, St Sunday Crag, Fairfield and many other popular spots. Almost every room has a spectacular view, especially the twin room which was originally an artist's studio. The house oozes charm and is very comfortable and warm, with a woodburner in the sitting room.

An amazing week over from NZ. The location was perfect, the house incredible well equipped with wonderful views and comfy rooms. Will definitely be recommit friends
We had an amazing mini break. The house was warm and homely with plenty of space for us and 5 kids and all the amenities we needed. The drive up the track was a bit challenging but the location was worth it, the views from the garden and windows are amazing. It was awesome starting each day watching the birds and squirrels in the garden. After long walks it was nice to sit around playing some of the many board games and checking out the impressive collection of books. The log burner was nice to have but the house was warm enough so we didn’t need to use it. As a base we found it very convenient and were able to explore all over the Lake District without ever having to travel too far. The host was friendly and very accommodating. We had a great time and would love to come and stay again.
Great location, don’t be put off by long drive to cottage, it’s well worth it. Loads of walks and boat trips, easy drive to Ambleside and Grasmere. Loved it, just loved it.
We enjoyed the beautiful area. The cottage is in a beautiful location with a view of lakes and mountain ridges. There are several hiking trails in the area where you can also walk with children. We had some questions during our stay and they were answered quickly. There are quite a lot of things in the cottage, so it takes some puzzling where you can put your own groceries, for example.
This was our third time staying here and we absolutely love it. It has beautiful views, amazing walks without having to take the car, well equipped kitchen. It is just perfect and we will be back again!
This was our second holiday at High Bield - we stayed 2 years ago. It is a very special place to stay as it is in a wonderful location. We only used the car twice during the one week we stayed because all the walks and cycle rides could be done from the house. Windermere station was only a short drive away so we could easily pick up family arriving from London. Weather wasn’t what we expected in early June - warm for the first couple of days then much cooler with rain for the rest of the week but this didn’t stop us walking and enjoying ourselves. We walked to Hart Crag which was a great 6 hour walk and also did the picturesque shorter Silver Crag walk which was more low level. We managed to have a few bbq’s at the beginning of the week then when it was cooler we enjoyed the warmth of the log burner inside playing board games and relaxing in front of the tv. It is a place where we have made lots of lovely memories and we all want to return. Thoroughly recommend High Bield for a great place to stay. One of the highlights was the US fighter jets flying low level in our valley doing training exercises - they flew over 3 different days. Great excitement for everyone. Lovely warm house in a very quiet area of the lakes. Stunning views.
The drive up to the house is very bumpy, so if you have a low car, I wouldn't even risk it.
We will be returning in the future.
Great stay in a quieter area of the lakes.
Magnificent views all around the property. Lots of walks nearby.
Nice and cosy property especially with the log burner. Comfy beds and everything you would need for a relaxing few days away.
Charming house, perfect for getting away from it all!
We were a family of 8 ranging in age from 15 to 77. The house was perfect and quirky which we loved. Spotlessly clean and everything that we needed was there.
The house is on the hillside and away from it all. We enjoyed walks from there around the nearby lake. Would love to return.
High Bield was exactly what we were looking for--elevated property overlooking the pristine valley with privacy and seclusion and the opportunity to walk out of the door and onto the Fells. The owner is attentive and responsive and we received exactly what was promised on the tin. Can't wait to stay there again.
Perfect location for walking. Wonderful views from the house. Well equipped house with every needed to make a comfortable stay.
Highly recommend this place, will definitely be back!
Visit to the Lakes with family, most from USA and some from England
We had a great time in a great location and a great house. We were lucky with very little rain so we did get some good hikes in and wished we had more time to hike right from the house. The drive to anywhere is on winding roads so anyone who gets car sick beware! We absolutely loved the out of the way location and hopefully will be able to return.
