About this property

Leat Cottage, Lifton - a perfect Devon escape

On the outskirts of the historic village of Lifton and recently refurbished, Leat Cottage is tucked away on a leafy, quiet Devon lane. It's just 5 minutes from the A30, convenient for Dartmoor and the North Devon and Cornish coasts. It is also directly on the newly designated Tamara Way public footpath. Ideal for walking, cycling, shooting, fishing, water sports or just getting away from it all. The village boasts a pub, a deli & café, 2 hotels with restaurants and bars, a Post Office and the award winning Strawberry Fields restaurant and farm shop; all within easy walking distance.

The space
Away from the congestion of the coast or Dartmoor, Leat Cottage is perfectly located in the Tamar Valley AONB. Ideal for relaxing in the West Devon countryside or enjoying the many local attractions and activities.

The cottage is finished to the highest standards featuring traditional whitewashed walls, beamed ceilings and a stone fireplace with wood burning stove. It also has a combi-boiler hot water and central heating system throughout. We offer accommodation for up to five people comprising; one double, one twin, one single and a family shower room. Downstairs provides comfortable, open-plan living in a traditional setting with a sitting area, dining area, and a fully equipped modern kitchen opening onto a private garden with BBQ and patio.

Fishing on the rivers Lyd and Tamar for salmon, sea trout, brown trout and grayling can be arranged locally. The cottage is only a five-minute walk from five named pools. There is also a well stocked trout lake in the village. More widely, there is fishing available on Dartmoor and various lakes and reservoirs. Guiding on the Tamar and Lyd, particularly night fishing for sea trout, is also available by prior arrangement with experienced and qualified local instructors. Shooting is available locally when in season, but advance booking is essential.

The nearby World Heritage Town of Tavistock is a short 15-minute drive and is the gateway to exploring Dartmoor. It provides a wide variety of pubs, restaurants, shops, banks and its famous Pannier Market is a must for the first-time visitor. More locally, within a five minute walk, the village has two pubs and two hotels including the famous Arundell Arms Hotel. Also located in the village is the award-winning and highly popular Strawberry Fields farm shop offering a restaurant and coffee shop serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon teas. The main shop itself has an on-site bakery, deli, butchers and wide selection of fresh local produce and groceries. Located in the centre of the village is a post office and licenced newsagents which also stocks a small range of Groceries. Within a short fifteen-minute drive are numerous highly recommended pubs and award-winning restaurants.

Perfect Peaceful Break

Lovely property on a very quiet lane which both we and our (over reactive) dogs appreciated. Fantastic communication from the owners. Felt thoroughly relaxed even after a relatively short stay.

Cozy cottage with high comfort

We really enjoyed our 2-week stay in this cottage which was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Communication with Fiona was always prompt and check-in and check-out were easy. We visited the neighbouring pub and also the farm shop and explored the area (lots of hikes in Dartmoor and along the Cornwall coast and beaches) and were sad to leave at the end.

Lovely cottage in a great location

We really enjoyed our week at the cottage, the garden and patio is a perfect sun trap. The cottage is really comfortable, absolutely spotless and well equipped. I would definitely recommend staying here as it's a great base to explore both Devon and Cornwall.

Excellent accommodation

Beautifully clean and well appointed cottage. Larger space than appears on the photos. We were a party of 4 adults and a dog and it suited us perfectly. Lovely dog walks along the lane. Places to eat/drink within walking distance and plenty more options just a short drive away. Highly recommend.

Amazing stay

We all had such a wonderful time here at Leat Cottage. It was a perfect location to explore more of Devon and easy to get to everywhere in Cornwall, as you are pretty much straight on the A30! We all said that the photos on the listing did not do it justice, it was so spacious and bright inside, and perfect for our getaway with friends. It is so peaceful on a very quiet lane, and the garden was fab to sit out in an have our breakfast and dinner, you get the sun most of the day! Also was great that it was secure for our dog to run around. The BBQ was also great and easy to use. It was lovely to see some horses in the field behind the house too! We took a walk one day to Strawberry Fields farm shop, highly recommended. Also went to the Springer Spaniel a few miles away for a great Sunday lunch. All in all, we had such a good time, so glad we booked! Thanks so much!

Delightful stay in Devon

My husband and I are traveling this year and we spent nearly a month at this property....and we could have easily stayed longer. This is such a central location to explore West Devon and East Cornwall. As the cottage goes, the kitchen is huge with three easy work spaces - great for families cooking a large dinner. We found everything we needed in the kitchen to make lovely meals inside or on the grill outside. The living room was very comfortable - the TV worked well and the little wood burner was delightful on the colder nights we had in the cottage. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are nicely appointment. The queen size bed in the master was super comfortable and the twins were adequate especially if you have kids. The very large walk in shower worked extremely well - always enough hot water and great shower pressure. Devon has soft water so go lightly on your product and the drinking water was simply yummy. There are three windows in the master bedroom; all with lovely views. Only not ideal is the only restroom is upstairs. Worked fine for my husband and I but with my 91 year old mother-in-law, would have been nicer to have a toilet downstairs... Only mention this in case you are traveling with an older or otherwise stair compromised person. The outside garden was lovely to sit and have a meal or have coffee in the morning and I very much enjoyed walking out to the garden to hang laundry....most people probably won't do much laundry and the wash machine / dryer combo worked well. We loved the area. Easy access to the Dartmoor, Tamar River Valley, Bude, Bocastle, Bodmin Moor, Eden, Polzeath, and Padstow. Really could have used another month to do everything we would have liked to do. Also, a huge shout out to the Arundell Arms. We had coffee and/or lunch about three days a week at the deli and when our larger family came down from London, we have a superb Sunday lunch. The staff are exceptional and the food very very good and extremely reasonable. Launceston is where we went for a bigger grocery shop either at Lidl or Tesco. Between the little store in Lifton and the Arundell Deli, you could get all the supplies you needed. In short, we had a very lovely stay. Both Alan and Fiona were great. Alan is a wealth of knowledge in the area.... take the advice in the book on places to go.... my favorite excursion was high tea at the Hotel Endsleigh.... don't be rushed and enjoy walking the grounds.

Delightful Holiday Cottage

Thank you for a very enjoyable few days away in your delightful, spacious, cosy and very clean cottage. Check in and out was very straight forward and the communication from the host was second to none. We were lucky with the sunny weather which made our stay even better. The cottage has a well equipped and large kitchen/dining area, a pretty garden and spacious bathroom & bedrooms. The location is perfect for visits to Dingles Heritage Fairground, Tavistock, Alder Vineyard, Dartmoor’s attractions, Launceston and not too far from the sea if you’re prepared to go the extra few miles. We would definitely consider returning in the future. Thank you very much Fiona.

Great stay!.

This property was lovely. Fiona, was so accomodating and helpful. Great location, but sadly for us, our stay was blighted by poor weather for the duration, and sadly Lifton is short of a good hostelry in those conditions. Loved this place. We will be back, hopefully bringing better weather with us. Fiona, hope you got the G-tech gixed lol. Regards Deryck, Tracey and Louie.

Comfortable and spacious.

This is a very comfortable and deceivingly spacious property. The kitchen/dining area is large and the front room very comfortable. There is decent sized garden with a lovely seating area. The local people are very friendly and helpful. A choice of supermarkets are less than a 10 minute drive away and there are a choice of places to eat and drink in the village. The road the cottage is on is very quiet so the space is very relaxing. I would definitely recommend this cottage.

Lovely cottage

First impression of the cottage was the space. The large kitchen was a suprise for a cottage. The lounge is very cosy with a log burner which was easy to use. The bedrooms are spacious and well furnished with a very comfy beds. The weather didn't alow us to enjoy the garden but the patio looks a lovely, quiet spot to sit in the evening. We really enjoyed our stay.

Tranquil cottage in village location

Very comfortable stay at Leat Cottage. Self check in and out was simple and hosts were easy to get hold of but not intrusive. They were very helpful with tips on where to go for food / trips (Dartmoor Inn at Lydford was a definite favourite for eating out). Cottage has everything you could ask for and lots of little extras. Beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. Lovely long garden (we didn't manage to get out there this time as it rained all week). Parking is on street in front of cottage. Plenty of local dog walks on doorstep. Great location for visiting Okehampton, Launceston, Tavistock, Dartmoor etc. Lifton village has corner shop, post office, pubs and hotels for dining so great place to stay.

An absolute gem!

We spent 3 nights at this property and didn’t want to leave! Check-in was contactless and very easy. The house was spotlessly clean, finished to a very high standard and so comfortable. Lovely gestures from owners - a bottle of wine on the table and fresh milk in the fridge were much appreciated. Lovely garden, which we unfortunately didn’t get to use as we managed to schedule our trip to Devon at the same time as Storm Alex! Our dogs were welcome at the property - I would personally class the garden as dog friendly, rather than dog safe as it is not completely fenced and the bank on one side can be easily scaled by an athletic dog. The house is within easy walking distance (10 minutes) to a local pub and also a hotel restaurant. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone wanting to explore the local area or the north or south coasts of Devon/Cornwall.

Great place to stay

Leat Cottage is lovely - 3 good sized bedrooms & a very well equipped spacious downstairs area to. I am 6ft 5 & was concerned at the ceiling heights before we arrived, absolutely nothing to worry about, nice high ceilings. Our dog Molly had a great time too using the nice long garden at the side of the house. Fiona was an attentive host through the booking of the cottage & leading up to our stay. Thanks Fiona we will definitely be back again. Steve & Jayne

Great house, very quiet with a lovely outdoor space, wish the weather had been better so we could have sat outside more, but hey ho! It didn’t spoil the break. Our dog loved it too! Very easy to book, great communication with the owners, will definitely come back again.
