Vacances au calme

Superbe endroit en Dordogne. Idéal pour se ressourcer au bord de l’eau. Le moulin est immense et très bien équipé ( 3 grandes chambres, 2 salles de bains, super cuisine).

Moulin de Connezac

We had a delightful and restful week in the Moulin. The house has great character and is peacefully nestled in the hills surrounded by streams, with a charming garden, with seating, loungers and even a badminton set, or boules for games. The well equipped kitchen made cooking a pleasure. The owner was very prompt and responsive, and there were lots of activities, walks and guide books to suggest day trips. The piano, bikes and kayak were added extras to expand the realm of holiday activities. The rustic charms of the property, made for a great week's stay. WiFi is fine around the kitchen area and snug. The TV is basic with a DVD connected but some of the remotes were not obviously operational. This is a lovely homely holiday location, with charm and character, in a conversion from a mill which retains some low doorways, so tall folk need to be mindful, as well as looking out for steps and waterways around the property making it potentially more hazardous for the very young or elderly.

Great experience! - Marvellous!

"Paradise is here!" - this saying, on a board in the kitchen of the mill is acutally the most accurate description for this location. Nothing to add. If you want to read more: Its a perfect place to relax. An impressive old structure immaculately renovated and formidably arranged sitting in the middle of pure nature. No traffic, no noise, just you. Ideal for one or even two families with small or grown-up (which was the case with us) children. We also used our 2 weeks stay to visit many of the famous sites in Perigord including caves, chateaus and small cities in direct vicinity to the mill but also went down to Dordogne and as far as Bordeaux. It was always a pleasure to return afterwards to the mill for complete recreation. Contact with Jacqueline was always nice and fast. Support by and talks with the local staff, Tom and Nathalie, living next to the mill, always a pleasure! Thx again Jacqueline for the opportunity to stay in Moulin Connezac!

Magnifique endroit !

Endroit magnifique! Vacances super.

Beautiful and relaxing

We loved our week at Le Moulin. It is a magical place with beautiful surroundings nd a river running through the house! Romain was very helpful and gave us lots of ideas for activities. From taking walks in the trails leading from the house to cold swims in the river pool or just sitting outside - we didn't need to leave! But, we did venture out. The Friday market in Brantôme was great. We also spent a moving afternoon with Laurence and her Arabian horses - highly recommended if you love horses:) Overall, an unforgettable week! We miss it already and hope to be back one day.

A Magical Place

Our family of 4 (two adults and 2 kids ages 12 and 15) rented this house with our friends and their two kids (ages 14 and 15) for a week this summer; the property exceeded all our expectations. The mill is beautiful, and there was more than enough space for the 8 of us. The master bedroom/bath is immense; the bedroom that my husband and I stayed in is lovely (antique furniture, canopy bed, fireplace). The kids' bedroom, with four single beds, was perfect. The (multi-lingual) caretakers were available at our convenience; the (French-speaking) gardener, Roman, was helpful as well. And the kitchen and "cave" were well equipped. The owners--who were in Kenya--responded promptly and in detail by text to all our questions (even a stupid one about where to find dinner on the Sunday night we arrived). (A digression: We did manage to answer this one on our own: the answer was La Charrue, a casual restaurant/in about 6 km away, which offered a 10 Euro dinner with wine--curry chicken or Asian short ribs--which was odd (for our first night in the Dordogne) but delicious and a lifesaver because we didn't realize that grocery stores would be closed at 2 on Sunday, and that most of the local restaurants would be booked by the time we called.) The location is a bit out of the way, which was what we were looking for. The adults spent the first few evenings relaxing over grilled dinner in the yard while the kids played boule and splashed around in the stream on the property. Our trip coincided with the Perseid meteor showers: memorable. We made day trips to Perigueux and Lascaux; we also made evening trips to night markets (check the web for information on them) in 3 local towns (the one in Perigueux is not to be missed). Even the somewhat spotty WIFI and phone service were perfect: we were trying to get away from work, after all. All in all, a magical experience in a beautiful place.

Paradise

I can't say enough good things about the Moulin. This is my only experience where pictures don't do it justice. We stayed for a month and honestly we were in tears when it came to leaving. It's absolutely idyllic for relaxing, tranquility, sightseeing, everything one wants to do on holiday. If I have the opportunity, I'd come back in a heartbeat, no hesitation whatsoever.

Beautiful old house in an amazing setting

We had a wonderful week here and wished we could have stayed longer. The house is in an amazing spot, peaceful and secluded but within a short cycle ride of the nearest village and shop. The mill is full of character but has been beautifully renovated. The kitchen is huge, and really well equipped and we enjoyed lots of family meals there. The owners provide everything you could need for a great family holiday and were very accommodating on the run up to our stay. We couldn't have wished for a better place to spend a week in the Dordogne - there is plenty to do in the area, but if you want to relax, then the house and gardens are a perfect spot to do just that. Thank you.

Charming house in a beautiful surrounding

We had a lovely two weeks in this beautiful and very well kept old water mill. We enjoyed the spacious garden surrounded by little streams. There was plenty of "wild life" in the garden such as lizards, dragon flies, butterflies, fish and beautiful king fishers. The children had an abundance of play things such as fishing gear, bicycles and table tennis. It was a feast to cook delicious meals in the well equipped kitchen with its large oven. We love the quiet location of the house in a beautiful landscape. By car the various beautiful sights of the Dordogne were well within reach. We often think about the lovely evenings we spent in the garden enjoying a nice glass of Bergerac. One day we hope to stay once more in this little paradise.

Beautiful house in a beautiful setting

We had a lovely 5 days stay at the mill in late August. We spent the days visiting the local markets of which there are many, going for a canoe on the river and enjoying the countryside around the mill on the bikes that they provide and on foot. The mill itself is very comfortable and 6 of us fit in it with plenty of space to spare. The kitchen lends itself to cooking some great family meals and we used the bbq on 3/4 occasions. I went for a dip in the 'pool' after a run which although v cold was very refreshing! All in all a great stay and we will be back.

Large well cared for home in valley by a stream

We had a lovely stay at the Moulin for the last week of June 2014. The property is well appointed and very spacious as are the lawns. Our children were fascinated by the stream that runs through the middle of it. The owners and the care takers ensured all our needs were met and were very pleasant to deal with. Although this area of the Dordogne was less touristed, that was a huge part of its charm. We managed to see all major sites we wished to further afield as well as take in the beauty of the neighbouring towns such as Brantôme and Périgueux. We enjoyed seeing this region feature in the recent 2014 Tour de France back home in Australia!

Lovely and charming house and grounds

We stayed 10 nights. The house is spacious, lovely, and tastefully appointed. Each room has its own character. The grounds enclose the house in a green, water-filled space. It's amazing having the mill stream (with a small waterfall) bisect the house between the kitchen/informal dining room (a large comfortable remodeled space) and the formal dining room. There is also a den (they call it a library) and a solarium (they call it a conservatory) downstairs. The upstairs is also large. The newest bathroom, which is in the hall next to the second bedroom, is a marvel, sort of a Zen space with a French window and shutters that somehow works aesthetically. The second bedroom is one of the smaller rooms, but that's only because the other rooms are so large. The master (descending a few stairs from the hall) is huge, and like the kitchen and formal dining room, runs from the front to the back of the house. You descend a few more stairs to get to the master bath, which, although not as spiffy as the new bath, is quite adequate. I wish more American bathrooms had bidets (we used it to soak our feet). Despite the high quality of appointments and equipment in the house, it feels lived in and comfortable. Peter and Elma, the caretakers, are pretty much always available by phone if you have questions about the house or the area. Be sure to try Le Petit Restaurant (Peter and Elma's recommendation), a first-class restaurant in a nearby village. The cuisine is as good as some fine restaurants in Paris. Also, if you get down to Aubeterre, go to Crepes de la Sources, which has far more than just crepes and where we had an outstanding lunch. Closer to home is L'Olive Noire (in Mareuil) - excellent pizza made by one of the two owners and very reasonably priced. Lots of stuff to do in the area. I heartily recommend Brantome, St. Jean-de-Cole, les Grottes de Villars, the Chateau de Puyguilhem (near Villars and the caves), Bourdeilles (magnificent chateau and scary castle tower), as well as lovely walks right in the area of the house (one is just on the other side of the back garden). We had unseasonably rainy and cool weather much of the time, but if you have to be occasionally (we still managed to get out quite a bit) stuck inside because of rain, the moulin is a wonderful place to be stuck.

Stunning place in a really great French location.

Genuinely lovely house, with lots of great features. The rushing water of the mill-stream, swimming in the mill pond, lovely garden for kids to rush about in, and surrounding villages and towns offering loads to do - this really is a great base for a stay in the Dordogne. Kitchen area is huge and excellently fitted out, and lounge areas are very comfortable, all retaining great French character. It's a real family home, and a very relaxing place to be. Loved it.

Characterful French charm in beautiful location

You couldn't really ask for a better family base for exploring the Dordogne. Located in beautiful countryside, on a stream, the house is huge, tastefully restored and well equipped. There is masses to do in the local area, the owners were very helpful and we will definitely book again.

Wonderful spacious property full of character

The pictures on the internet do not do this property justice. It is a fantastically spacious old property full of charm and character with every 'home from home' convenience. The setting is idyllic with a secluded garden surrounded by the mill stream which is ideal for sunbathing all day long. The owners were very helpful before our stay and the caretakers who live in the next village were very welcoming and helpful when we arrived. The property is a great rural retreat for those looking for peace and quiet and yet only 20 minutes drive from the beautiful town of Brantome. We enjoyed exploring the local area by bike and some bikes are available in the property for guests use. We regularly cycled to the friendly local bakery ( about a mile away) for fresh bread and cakes. Overall we had a great holiday. This house is one of the best we have ever stayed in and I would thoroughly recommend it.

About the host

Hosted by Jacqueline Gray

Host profile image
I have a passion for the naturalness of Le Moulin, I love seeing nature having such a big personality and evolving throughout the year. Le Moulin is special in all seasons. I have spent many years working in Asia and been inspired by other cultures, fabrics, different tastes, which over time find their way into Le Moulin.

Why they chose this property

It is simply charming, the water grounds you, helps you relax. The sun sets as you sip your evening drink over the back garden. There is a BBQ and a fire pit. Eating alfresco is splendid.
For children the woods offer lots to explore and play in nature. If you enjoy foraging, the woods even have truffles! Enter the natural pool on a hot day! You can take the kayak down the stream or try fishing. It is a place to enjoy friends and family and unwind and relax together. Local lanes are beautiful to cycle in summer months amongst the sunflowers.

What makes this property unique

A Moulin comes with a lot of history, in our case since 1429. The house has been nicely developed to create an engaging living space. Waking up in the morning and looking out over the valley is a wonderful feeling. Listening to the distant sound of water and the birds is charming. The natural pool is set behind Le Petite Moulin, perfect for a dip on a hot summers day. The old Mill stones are in the garden. The Mill would have ground walnuts to make nut oil and probably flour.
The wildlife, be it the insects, flowers or birds, we want to feel this is a special habitat for them.
One day I've love to re instate some form of hydro power and become green and self sufficient. There are a number of Chateaux in the area, it is fun to bike to them and take a picnic. If you like to draw or paint I'm sure you will be inspired!
