About this property

Unique And Charming Traditional Stone Cottage In Picturesque Surroundings

Turrock Cottage is situated along the Wicklow Way, on the east side of Stookeen Hill, with views over South Wicklow and North Wexford. Eircode is Y14F308.
The cottage is within a farmyard, and close to the main house where we live. We are close to Shillelagh and Tinahely villages, and the cottage is an ideal base for exploring the delights of both Wicklow and Wexford. Avoca, the Ballykissangel village, is just 25kms away while Dublin is 70 kms away. Both the medieval city of Kilkenny and Glendalough are less than an hour’s drive away.
An ancient oak forest, Tomnafinnogue Wood, is a beautiful place to walk, any time of year and the beautiful Altamont Gardens and Huntington Castle are always worth a visit. Horse riding, fishing and the Coolattin Golf Club are all available locally. No visit to Turrock is complete without a visit to the Dying Cow pub where you can relax and look at the views, hear some traditional music being played by local musicians and while away the hours.
For walkers, we are on the Tinahely to Clonegal leg of the Wicklow Way and are close to the Tinahely loop walks which cater for walkers of varying fitness levels.

We are a perfect location for guests attending weddings at Ballybeg House,Lisnavagh House or Mount Wolseley Hotel. We are a 12 minute drive to Ballybeg House and 15 minutes to both Lisnavagh House and the Mount Wolseley.

Our traditional stone cottage sleeps 5 in comfort but can accommodate 6 by request,if 3 sleep in the downstairs bedroom. There is a triple room, a double room and a single bed loft above the wood-burning stove fireplace. The dining area/kitchen is very spacious with a high ceiling allowing plenty of light and is complete with a large Belfast sink and traditional pine dresser. The large dining table seats 6 comfortably on traditional Bentwood chairs, but will squeeze in more if visitors arrive. The table is perfect for hosting long, lazy breakfasts and cosy, evening meals while the stove with its dramatic granite chimney breast heats the radiators throughout the cottage keeping it warm and comfortable. The kitchen is fitted out with dishwasher, fridge, microwave and washing machine. Local carpenters and wood-turners have crafted the many presses, worktops and lamp stands giving the cottage a warm, rustic feel. For wet or winter days, a CD/TV is available as well as a small library with a section of books, DVDS, magazines, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards and Scrabble for those who crave excitement! A small sitting room with sofa and doors opening onto a raised stone deck continues on from the kitchen area. Outside furniture is available for those long, hot summer evenings when all you want to do is look at the magnificent views while having a cup of tea or glass of wine. Unfortunately internet is not currently available.

The bedrooms have exposed timber flooring while the kitchen and bathroom have traditional black slate tiles. The wet room/bathroom has a traditional Belfast sink and walk-in electric shower with stones foraged from Wicklow and Wexford beaches that massage your feet while you wash away the stresses of the day.

Sit out on the raised stone deck area and admire the views, listen to the donkeys serenading and the roosters and goat providing the perfect soundtrack to your day. Later in the evening, you may spot deer, see bats leaving their ‘batcave’ for their nightly flight; in early May you may be lucky enough to hear the cuckoo.
Our hens and ducks provide perfect eggs for breakfast when they are laying and our 2 ‘outside’ cats may come looking for attention. Brayden and Alex, our donkeys, are delighted to see new people who might give them the odd carrot. Juno, our dog is very friendly and cannot get enough attention.
Our 4 peacocks are a pleasure to watch especially the males Pluto and Apollo with their amazing display of colour and magnificent tail feathers.

Highlight of our trip!
Ciaran’s home was exactly what we had hoped and better! We were looking for the mythical Irish countryside experience and his home and property delivered! The home was super cozy, and the grounds and surrounding area were extremely peaceful and enchanting. You can tell Ciaran and Deirdre are true artists!

Little paradise
We were warmly welcomed and had a wonderful week from then on. With great animals (including banana-loving peacocks), a great view over green hilly landscapes and a good starting point to explore the southwest of Ireland. Thank you very much for your time with you!

Wonderful accommodation.
Truly an enjoyable experience staying at this unique cottage. Our host arranged many extras to make us comfortable. Such a cosy cottage. I wish we could have stayed longer. And he was a wealth of knowledge about the area and the culture of that part of Ireland. We felt very welcome.

Staying at Turrock Cottage
Ciaran and Deirdre were welcoming and helpful. Best hosts and place ever to share a delightful and peaceful stay. We had lovely time in the cottage! It's like paradise. The cottage's charming and cozy and surroundings are spectacular and gorgeous. You can travel around very easily even in the very narrow roads. Listen to Deirdre's songs was magic! Let your soul sway to the traditional Irish music. She sings so wonderful. Peacocks, chickens and geese sound when arrival. They always come closer to get some food or attention. Same as cats, Juno the dog and donkeys. We highly recommend this place. It's really worth spending your vacation.

Wonderfull, idyllic cottage
We had a wonderful time in March. We loved being away from the cities to enjoy the fresh air, calm surroundings and every lovely animal on the farm. Ciran is a wonderful host with lots of good hikingtips for the sorrounded area. We loved the details in the house and enjoyed some rainy afternoon in the living room with Mario beside a nice warm fireplace. We highly recommend to plan a stay in this cottage.

Magical Place
Turrock Cottage is a magical place. Everywhere you look there is something delightful to see. The owners were welcoming and helpful. Important that you like animals and don't mind driving on a narrow laneway. Closest food is about 15 minutes away. Would be a good idea to bring breakfast food with you. Would love to revist with family and friends.

Wonderful Irish Farm Experience
This property is nestled atop a hill on a one lane road. Ferns, fuschia, and foxglove line the drive. Once you arrive chickens, geese, and peacocks scurry around, calling out to sound your arrival. There is a pair of friendly donkeys, and farm cats looking for scratches. The cottage is like stepping back in time. Tastefully decorated, and stocked with all of the necessities. Our host was very welcoming, and gave us a wonderful tour. This is a rustic functional farm, so be prepared for a real experience. There is a pub just up the road with good food. There is a few local experiences to have, like wooded walks, and a castle. We hope to visit them on our next trip back.

Highly recommended Authentic Experience
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Turrock Cottage and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and authentic Irish countryside experience. We began our two week driving holiday staying with Deirdre and Ciaran for two nights and they set a high standard for every place we stayed afterwards. My sister and I were taking my parents (79 and 80) around Ireland by car. The cottage is well equipped with everything our family needed both big (dishwasher, pots, fireplace) and small (tea cosy, spices, proper knives) which made us feel right at home. The beds were very comfortable and the place was extremely well kept and clean. The layout was perfect for us - older parents in the main floor bedroom, my sister and I each in our own loft. The property is set in a beautiful secluded valley, which is a bit difficult to find first time but adds to the peaceful setting. Ducks and geese and chickens and cats and donkeys and a very friendly dog (Juno) are all part of the experience. (l will add photos to my review once I return home to my computer). We used this location as our base to explore the south east corner of the country and it suited well. This place stands apart from other properties we have stayed due to the personal touch of the proprietors. Little things like fresh cut flowers from the garden and fresh eggs from the hens show the care and attention Deidre and Cairan take to make their guests feel welcome. These hosts are on sight and are genuinely eager to actually meet and host with friendly Irish hospitality, unlike many other locations we stayed where, though comfortable and well appointed, there is a caretaker who simply oversees the coming and goings of tourists through a property as a business operation. Chatting with Ciaran and Deirdre was a highlight of our trip to Ireland. I look forward to returning someday to continue our conversations.

A home away from home!
Our stay at Turrock Cottage was beautiful, amazing, peaceful and fun! 4 weary travelers arrived earlier than expected and Deidre and Ciaran were so accommodating by allowing us to come early. The drive to the cottage was stunning and when we arrived everything was ready for us. The fresh scones were perfectly delicious. My young son and niece quickly fell in love with all the animals and even got a nosey kiss or two from the donkeys. A very busy little rooster did his rounds of checking on all the animals and then came up to our door to check on us as well! Although we ventured out further than the local area, there was plenty to do close to the cottage. We went on a hunt to find some church ruins, the kids made some chocolate houses at a local chocolataire, and enjoyed a fun family outing in the surrounding towns and even visited more farm animals and playground at a local farm open for people. My young son's best memory is meeting "Adult" Ciaran, his new friend, since my son's name is Ciaran as well he was in such awwe! Whenever we would return home from our daily outings, "Adult" Ciaran would let out the ducks, chicken etc and the kids loved it! We felt so welcome and loved while staying at the cottage. Every morning my mother and I would wake, have a good cuppa tea and watch the fog roll over the beautiful hills that surrounded the area. The sights, sounds, and smells were truly hypnotic. Daily the neighbors little Tabby cat came to visit us and would provide snuggles. The Cottage itself was very accommodating to our needs and it was nice to cook from "home". There was a Tesco not to far of a drive away so it was easy to get what we needed. We highly recommend Turrock Cottage, and please make sure to support the local community and visit the sites around it. There is plenty to do if you stay near by or take a drive out a little further as we did. We most certainly will be back and will stay longer.
