About this property

Oceanfront-One Acre-Spectacular Views, Free Internet - Hot tub-Close to Victoria

Architect-designed 3500 sq. ft. home on one acre of Vancouver Island waterfront. Ceramic radiant-heat floors. Clean, quiet, heat. Quality appliances in the very complete kitchen. New beautiful Samsung Virtual Flame Induction range with dual oven. New stainless fridge.

Eighteen-foot ceilings in living room. Artist's loft. Modern classic west-coast design. Three very spacious beautiful bedrooms - each with ocean views and comfy beds. Living room and master bedroom with fireplace. Luxurious bathrooms with walk-in shower and soak tub. Toilets in separate rooms from bathrooms. Relax in the hot tub at night with the stars above and the ocean in front of you. Enjoy our collection of original art, books and beautiful gardens. Sixty-five foot deck and walls of glass give views of eagles, orca whales and sailboats. New plasma flat screen, Free Netflix. Free high-speed wireless internet connection for your laptop and ipod dock for your music.

Art and Gardens:: ---Carolyn is a professional artist and you will enjoy her paintings in the studio loft and throughout the house. The gardens and grounds that surround the house will add to your outdoor pleasure and of course there is always the gentle lapping of waves on the beach.

We have several returning guests who enjoy 'Seagate' as their special vacation get-away and a great pleasure for us is making new friends through email and sometimes in person. Because of the care from past guests, we no longer ask for a damage deposit and we do not charge for cleaning. We regard our guests as 'family'. The entire house and grounds are yours to enjoy in privacy.

The Ocean: --We are located on a bay that is protected by Saltspring Island. Often there are canoe and sailboat races in the bay and during the summer we keep our own sailboat in front of the house. It is not unusual to see eagles, herons, and other birds. On several occasions, we have had orca whales in the bay and this spring, three humpback whales.

At night we often enjoy a glass of wine in the hot tub overlooking the ocean. We are in a very safe, private, quiet location with no through traffic and yet close to Victoria and local shops. At night you will most likely only hear the soft sound of waves or the call of a loon.

Vineyards: --We are located in the prime wine producing area of Vancouver Island with many vineyards just a short drive away and one of the best is just a lovely 15-minute walk from the house. If you enjoy wine, try a tasting tour of the wineries. Information will be in the house. The quaint fishing village of Cowichan Bay is only a 10-minute drive away with what our guests describe as some of the best bread and ice cream available-- and of course, seafood. Great to stroll on the docks to inspect the boats!

So peaceful and beautiful :)
Denis and Carolyn's home is in such an amazing location and is so welcoming from the time you arrive. They had sent us very organized instructions with everything we needed to know for our stay, and it was so appreciated! Their home is filled with such beautiful artwork from Carolyn and it just adds to the peacefulness. The sights from their deck are incredible and we just loved sitting out there for hours :) It felt like a retreat in our busy lives. We totally recommend their home!!

Spectacular in every category
It was such a wonderful stay. The area is very peaceful and quiet at all times of day and night. A very idyllic and tranquil setting with exceptional views. The property is set up with multiple places for quiet reflection and access to the waters below. The house is a top quality custom build with everything you might need for your stay and set up to take advantage of the views from every room. The location was just right for us. From here we were able to explore in all directions including south to Victoria. There's lots to do for every lifestyle. Zenful repose or physical adventure; there are opportunities for both in the area. The hosts were quick to respond and gave very clear directions for everything in the house. They genuinely wish for your stay to be the best it can. We would love to come back and can't recommend the property highly enough to others. Thank you so much Denis and Carolyn for sharing this little piece of heaven.

Paradise!
The scents, sights and sounds of Seagate are still present in my memories. We spent last week in Paradise at Seagate! It was fun to prepare our meals in the gorgeous kitchen and decide which of the wonderful al fresco dining areas would we eat each meal. Spectacular views of Cowichan Bay from every window. Denis and Carolyn have taken great effort in providing a comfortable retreat with beautiful gardens, decks and indoor amenities with lots of privacy and solitude. We enjoyed the convenience of kayaking from the nearby village of Cowichan Bay, toured Butchart Gardens by day and night, watched the deer and marine life in the forests and beach near the house, enjoyed the convenience of wireless internet while gazing at the ocean, appreciated the decorator touches and Carolyn's awesome artwork, and so much more. We can hardly wait to return to this little slice of paradise shared between mother, daughter and friend.

A Dream House
As soon as we stepped through the beautiful entrance and saw the jaw-dropping view we knew we would have a wonderful week and we certainly did. The house is perfect throughout, beautifully decorated (loved Carolyn's paintings!) and incredibly well maintained with everything you could possibly want for a fantastic stay. The gardens are gorgeous and fun to explore with all its nooks and crannies and having your own beach is lovely. The hot tub each night was very special! We slept incredibly well and had the most relaxing week. When we did manage to drag ourselves away from the house, we found the area of Cowichan Bay itself is lovely & fell in love with it, especially with the fantastic weather and fall colours that we were lucky to have. Mill Bay is great for shopping and has a lovely little marina and there's a great cafe in Maple Bay right on the front. Goldstream Provincial Park is also worth a visit esp. when in the fall when you can see the salmon run, up close as we did. Victoria itself isn't far away and is a great city. All in all a fantastic week in a wonderful house. We would return in a heartbeat and would definitely recommend to anyone looking to rent in this area. And I would definitely recommend staying in this area! Thank you so much, Denis & Carolyn, for sharing your wonderful house with us. You were so helpful and friendly and there for any questions we might have had. Thank you for making our final moments travelling in the Pacific Northwest wonderful ones. We'll treasure the memories.

Fantastic house , Cowichan, Vancouver Island
The house is spectacular with million dollar views. The massive terraced garden is superb. There are multiple decks and sitting areas to follow the sun around the home all day ! It is very comfortable with three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. The beds were most comfortable. The house was very well appointed with anything you could wish for during your visit. It was extremely clean. The owners are delightful and very helpful. I have no reservations in recommending this property.

Beautiful vistas, home and garden
A little piece of paradise ion the Cowichan Coast. Lovely hosts of a gem of a home and that fab view! We wished we had stayed longer. There’s lots to do from hiking and kayaking to exploring all the towns. Fun for all ages. If you happen to have a crab pot and a kayak- there was lots of crabbing just off the shore of the property. One of our best vacations.

There was only one problem with our stay... it was far too short!
First of all, I felt it was a privilege to be in such a marvelous home. Thank you to Denis and Carolyn for sharing this spectacular place for the time you're off globetrotting! :-) We live in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, with spectacular views from our own back yard. However, Cowichan Bay and environs left us in awe as we looked out the windows or sat on the deck. Actually, there are many areas at Seagate from which to enjoy the views -- the McDonald's must have amazing gatherings of family and friends there. Several dozen seating places are spread throughout the gorgeous property. Plus, the stairs going down to the shore was a special highlight, one of many! The house itself has all the amenities one could ask for, but the really special part for me was the art... all the pieces collected by the hosts, but primarily the beautiful paintings done by Carolyn herself. I really can't say enough about how we loved the overall decor and furnishings for the entire week we stayed at Seagate Villa. Because we spent pretty much every day traveling hither and yon (south to Victoria, north to Nanaimo) to the usual tourist attractions, we wound up spending only one day simply lounging around and relaxing. Had we known, we would definitely have booked Seagate for two weeks! Thank you again, Denis and Carolyn, for opening up your most lovely home like this. We really, really enjoyed it! :-)

Paradise found on Vancouver Island
We enjoyed the fabulous ocean views and heavenly setting. Our daughter loved the hammock. My husband loved the beach and the birds, we all loved the immaculate garden and Al fresco dining. Convenient for several vineyards (Cherry Point, Unsworth, Zanatta) where one can wine and dine very well indeed. Also farm shops notably Kilrenny are great. We would go back there at the first opportunity.

Lovely, comfortable view home with amazing art to enjoy!
Denis and Carolyn have generously and graciously offered their home to the rest of us to enjoy. It is well equipped and ready to accommodate. The views of the water are wonderful. The moon setting over the water creates a vision we'll worth photographing. Cow Bay is a quaint small fishing village that is so fun to explore. The Masthead restaurant is a fine dining venue that we have enjoyed several times over the past several years. We tried the Cow Cafe for the first time this trip. It's a casual spot offering a varied menu. We ate there for lunch twice and we're pleased both times. Seagate offers a home away from home and is a great place to relax, as well as being well located to explore and enjoy the beautiful countryside and environment. The Thrifty grocery store nearby offers all the usual but good sushi and a great bakery and cheese selection as well. My husband tried his hand at fishing on the river at Duncan. Didn't catch any fish but enjoyed having the opportunity to try:) Enjoy your time here and thank you Denis and Carolyn!

Homey, roomy and amazing views!
Hello Denis and Carolyn, I just wanted to send a short note and let you know once again how delighted we were with your home. It worked out perfectly for my mother using a walker and wheelchair as we gave her the master suite. She stayed there on her own a couple of days to rest up after one of our intermittant excursions up island or to Victoria, and she enjoyed the peace and quiet and of course your amazing view. My brother and his wife from Scotland we extremely impressed and thought it was much better than even the website photos portrayed. We could sit and watch the ocean for hours, with the many boats coming and going and all the delightful birds, so busy at this time of year. We also enjoyed the hot tub as we had one in our previous house for 13 yrs. and have missed it since our move to town 7 yrs ago. It was wonderful watching the night sky and even saw several pretty intense shooting stars. We also went out walking a lot and had a lovely lunch at the Cherry Point Winery while out walking on our last day. I know that you have no control over the weather, but it was great the whole time we were there. I hope we left the house in good shape and did the recycling and garbage properly. We don't have the same intensity of recycling up here in Vanderhoof and it seems every area is a little different. We had an early ferry reservation from Schwartz Bay on the 18th in order to get my Scottish relatives to YVR, so we were in a bit of a rush to get out of the house. Once again we are very sorry about the broken small Mexican piece (I believe a whistle) and thank-you for being so understanding. We really enjoyed all of your artwork, both the ones you've collected in your travels and those you have done yourself. We did purchase some cards and jewellery and left the money in the loft. We usually try to stay in a rental home when we travel as we like to feel more a part of a community rather than a "tourist" and your place will go down as one of our favorites. sincerely, Glen & Jesse

Wonderful Seagate!
Although we had seen the pictures nothing could compare to what was waiting for us when we arrived at seagate. The house was wonderful but then we saw 'that' view. Wow. The house was all we had hoped for and more, very convienient for exploring the entire island. There were so many things to do locally, like whale watching, visiting Butchart Gardens and sampling the many local vineyards and restaurants. Being able to come back to such a lovely home in the evenings only added to our wonderful holiday on Vancouver Island. Thanks to Denis and Carolyn for sharing their home with us.

Vacation Get Away
My family and recently stayed here and had a wonderful time! The house was perfect! The instructions that were left were easy to follow we hardly had to do anything to keep the house running! The deck was wonderful to sit and relax every morning as we ate breakfast! The hot tub was outstanding, great for late night star gazing. Great modern escape in the country! It had easy access to the highway towards Victoria or to catch the ferry to Vancouver. We loved every minute of our stay! Our family consisted of 2 adults and two children (8 and 9 yrs) we had a great stay our only wish is that it was closer to Kansas so we could return! :)

Spectacular Home!
My husband, son, his friend and I spent a week at this wonderful home. The house was very, very clean and quite comfortable. The owners take fantastic care of this house. The view from the home is spectacular! The grounds are covered with amazing flowers. The kitchen is stocked with many more amenities than any other rental we've ever had the good fortune of renting. The wireless internet was very convenient. We enjoyed the hot tub a few nights. The home is very close to wineries! Upon entering the house, we felt like we were home! Thanks Carolyn and Dennis!

Lovely Get-Away
I loved waking up each morning to the sounds and sights of the ocean. The forest, mountains, and ocean view are magnificent. Sunrise breakfast on the terrace became our ritual as well as looking out for the soaring eagle and baby quail chicks with their momma that scavenged the area for food. One morning we were fortunate to witness the sailboats racing from the balcony of this house; this was truly a magnificent sight. The house and property are meticulously maintained. Each room looks out to the ocean and inside the house are lovely displays of artwork as well as Carolyn’s own personal paintings. I felt like Robinson Crusoe in his tree house! Smelling the jasmine as I entered and left the house each day was bonus, as well as the profuse blooming of roses, daisies, petunias, pansies, etc. that lace the house with their fragrances too. The location is excellent for visiting numerous places on the island; nothing is more than an hour drive away. I highly recommend this home with its beautiful setting. I hope to come back here again.

About the host

Hosted by Denis & Carolyn McDonald

Host profile image
Carolyn and Denis are recently retired teachers who have lived and worked in Canada, England, Australia and Jamaica. Carolyn is a professional artist who has regular showings. Denis enjoys workworking and tries not to destroy the flowers in the garden with his weedwacker.

Why they chose this property

We saw this home style in Australia and brought the plans back to Canada and then were very fortunate to find a property that had everything we wanted: wonderful views, quiet, yet close to shops, great neighbours, and waterfront. Every day we feel fortunate to live here--and love to share the house when we are on our frequent travels.

What makes this property unique

We were able to add design details to the house like heated ceramic floors, sixty-five foot deck facing the ocean, granite countertops, and an artist's loft. If you like art, you will enjoy the many pieces throughout the house. We also have a good collection of books and music.
