The Neighborhood:
Located to the south of the neighbourhoods of Southwark and Borough, Elephant and Castle is in many ways the poster child for the changing face of South London, with modernisation and gentrification taking full effect in this bustling and busy neighbourhood in recent years. Elephant and Castle have benefitted from a £3 billion investment and regeneration project over 10 years, meaning it is rapidly becoming one of the most newly desirable areas to live in London. One example of the amazing regeneration the success of the Artworks, a multi-function complex with yoga studios, vintage clothes stores and cafes; all signs of a prosperous and flourishing neighbourhood. Just a couple of minutes’ walk from the famous Elephant and Castle roundabout is the Southwark Playhouse, a well-renowned off-West End theatre that has a full programme of professional plays and musicals throughout the year. The excellent Imperial War Museum is just a 10-minute walk from the heart of Elephant & Castle, and this free-to-enter museum showcases brilliant exhibits that chronicle the history of war and conflict. The underground station at Elephant and Castle is served by the Bakerloo line, and the nearby National Rail station of the same name runs regular trains through to Blackfriars, City Thameslink station and St. Pancras International. What’s more, the Elephant and Castle roundabout are one of the focal points of the extensive South London bus network, with a regular timetable of buses running to destinations across London.
The closest grocery store is Sainsbury's on New Kent Road, a 5-minute walk from your home. There is a cash point at the Sainbury's shop on New Kent Road and the nearest pharmacy is Superdrug Pharmacy in Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre.
When it comes to food and drink, Elephant and Castle have seen an explosion of new and exciting restaurants and bars in recent years. La Luna on Walworth Road is a charming Italian restaurant with great pizzas and fresh seafood dishes for very reasonable prices. The best French restaurant in the area is the stylish Brasserie Toulouse Lautrec, with a jazz bar upstairs and a menu of French classics, including steak tartare. Local foodies in the know head to the Italian-inspired Mercato Metropolitano, an indoor street market that is packed with bustling stalls peddling everything from oysters to pizzas and to German craft beer to gelato ice cream. Paladar, meanwhile, is a nice Latin American tapas fusion restaurant with an amazing wine menu. For a relaxed evening drink, head to the trendy wine bar Diogenes the Dog, or the iconic pub, simply named The Elephant and Castle, that has been a staple of the area for decades. As far as nightlife goes, Elephant and Castle is home to one of the most famous nightclubs in the world, the legendary Ministry of Sound where superstar DJs and well-known producers frequent the turntables.
Getting Around:
Elephant and Castle tube station on the Bakerloo and Northern line is the closest station (5 min walk). The number 453 bus towards the city centre run from stop Elephant & Castle New Kent Rd (Stop M) located 4 minutes away from the flat.
