Staying at Riof Bay is a decision very well made; you have discovered a truly special place. The annexe is situated right beside Reef Bay on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis. It is sheltered from the prevailing weather, so you will see lots of wildlife enjoying a respite from the turbulent waters of the North Atlantic only a few miles across the peninsula.
The annexe itself adjoins the owner’s home, but is very private. Entering the annexe, you have a spacious hallway that leads through to the large living/dining/kitchen area. This space has amazing views out across the bay, and there is a door leading down some steps to a seating area, so you can enjoy watching wildlife, the northern lights, or simply having a drink and switching off from modern life. The kitchen is very well equipped, the dining area is more than suitable, and the living space has an excellent TV and a DVD player. Back to the hallway and there is a double bedroom and a spacious shower room. The entire property has underfloor heating, so it’s comfortable throughout the year.
Within a few minutes’ walk you can be strolling the amazing Reef Beach on the other side of the peninsula, and a little further away is the tiny sandy cove of Mangersta Beach. There is a lot said about the beaches further south on the island of Harris, but here in the far west of Lewis, a secret has been kept that the beaches in fact rival anything you will have ever seen anywhere in the world; they are outstanding. It’s not all about the beach though, there are hills, lochs and moors for you to explore on foot. The rugged Uig hills rise up near to Riof Bay and are outliers of the North Harris hills. There are many adventurous routes you can head off on into and up these mystical island peaks.
You could spend a week at Riof Bay without getting back into your car, but using it now and again during your holiday is a good idea. Several miles away you can stroll around the world-famous Callanish Standing Stones. They’re older than Stonehenge and are an other-worldly experience. Go early in the morning and have them all to yourself. A little further on from Callanish up the west coast you can explore the picturesque black house village at Gearrannan, and if you have driven there, you may as well as explore the west coast of Lewis all the way up to Stevenson’s Butt of Lewis lighthouse (officially the windiest spot in the United Kingdom!). Stornoway is a nice small town and a useful centre to visit, and remember that the Isle of Harris is connected to Lewis; they are in fact one island with the North Harris mountains the only barrier. The road to Harris is worth taking, and exploring Harris will be a very rewarding day out.
It’s honestly a struggle to think of any place better for a holiday. The Outer Hebrides, the Isle of Lewis, Riof Bay deliver on all fronts. You will visit for a week, and want to stay for two and book again to return; a truly magical place. Beach 1 mile. Shop 5 miles, pub 33 miles and restaurant 5 miles.
Riof Bay can be booked together with Riof Ocean Cottage (UK7125) to accommodate up to 6 guests.

8/10 Good

A great place for a get away from it all trip, and a good base to explore the west of Lewis.

A great place for a get away from it all trip, and a good base to explore the west of Lewis. Bad weather and ferry disruption didn’t spoil it for me (but maybe that disrupted the cleaning regime, which was not good?).There are great views from the cottage and many wild spots and extensive beaches. The local community shop is very good, but other amenities are far away, as expected.
