About this property

Les Tourterelles La Ferme des Tourterelles

Les Tourterelles (The Turtledoves) has been converted from an old timber framed barn into a building reminiscent of the medieval houses of Troyes. The large oak beams have been exposed wherever possible as have the limestone walls giving the rooms a certain charm. The first floor is constructed from oak floorboards. In the large sitting room/dining room, a wood burner nestles in the chimney place providing additional heat and ambience if you so desire. There is a separate, well equipped kitchen.
There is a bathroom/shower room for each bedroom. The main bedroom with an exposed stone wall has a king size bed and satellite TV along with en suite bathroom with bath, shower, handbasin and toilet as well as a hair dryer. The second bedroom with double aspect windows has two single beds though is large enough to accommodate a third if requested. The third bedroom has french windows with a Juliette balcony.
The terrace in front is bordered by trellis with roses, honeysuckle and clemati

Set on the borders of a regional park and champagne vineyards, La Ferme des Tourterelles provides an oasis of calm. There are four cottages recently converted from barns, sleeping 8-10, 6-7, 4-5 and 4 people, each decorated to a high standard providing all comforts. Each have their own private terrace surrounded by honeysuckles and roses. They line a courtyard and all have access to the large garden and outdoor heated swimming pool which have fabulous views of the rolling hills of forest and arable fields.

You can relax on one of the many terraces, play games such a table-tennis or boules. There is much to occupy you from visiting the medieval towns of Bar-sur-Aube or Troyes, shopping in the biggest factory outlets at Troyes, having fun at Nigloland the 3rd largest amusement parks in France, following the champagne route discovering great good value champagnes, walking or cycling in the countryside, or partaking in the water sports on the lakes in the Regional Park nearby.

La Ferme des Tourterelles at Eclance: We are situated in Eclance on the borders of the champagne producing region and the ParkRegional Naturel of the Forest d'Orient. Eclance is a small village nestling in a large clearing surrounded by woods and rolling countryside. It is predominantly a village based on agriculture. La Ferme des Tourterelles used to house dairy cattle whose milk was used by the Eclance cheese maker to make a cheese well known in these parts. Whilst we have been able to revive at least the farm buildings, the cheese maker is now no longer in existance.

Our gardens and pool look out onto the forest of the Regional Park, with the forests and its wildlife protected as a Natura 2000 site. Wildlife is abundant with the seasons greeting different birds as they migrate across our region. Deer and wild boar can also be seen.

For those who book a week at La Ferme des Tourterelles, a bottle of champagne is on offer from our favourite champagne makers Philippe Legout from Rouvres-les-Vignes.

Beautiful gite in gorgeous grounds with fabulous hosts

I stayed in Les Touterelles with my parents and teenage twins. The accommodation was fantastic (3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms) - really well equipped and spacious; the grounds were absolutely gorgeous with lots of space, the pool was a great size and we had it to ourselves mostly, played petanque and table tennis, had a couple of BBQ's too. It is quite remote although only a short drive to villages, shops and restaurants, but would have been nice to be able to walk to some of those. The hosts were so friendly, helpful and accommodating, even finding a place for us to hire a wheelchair for mum so we could visit more of the nearby villages and towns without her getting too tired. Overall, a wonderful, restful and fabulous holiday which worked for my older parents as well as my teenage boys. Sarah and James could not have been more helpful either. Would thoroughly recommend and hope to go back soon!

A beautiful spot in rural Champagne

We spent 2 weeks in the 6 person gite - Les Tourterelles - there are also 4 and 8 person gites available. The farm buildings have been beautifully converted and are actually far more spacious and comfortable than the photographs are able to convey. We have rented many holiday properties over the years and have rarely come across one as well equipped as this. With plenty of good quality kitchen utensils, cutlery and crockery, making meals is a pleasure and the dishwasher only needs to go on once a day. We also enjoyed meals on our private terrace just off the kitchen, but there are plenty of other eating spots around the grounds including a shaded BBQ area close to the gites, and some picnic tables arranged to take in the views of neighbouring countryside at the far end of the garden. The site provides plenty to entertain everyone, including an impeccable pool area with plenty of loungers and parasols, table tennis, petanque, badminton, footballs and goals and a playground area for toddlers. Although the other gites were fully occupied during our stay, we found we rarely had to share the pool with other families and the whole set-up feels uncrowded and always relaxed. Nearest shops and restaurants are about 10 minutes drive away in Bar-sur-Aube, but for a more eclectic selection it's worth visiting Troyes, around 40 minutes away. Thank you to Sarah and James who were consummate hosts - always around when you need them but melting seamlessly into the background when you don't!

A wonderful stay

We spent two wonderful weeks at the property. It is set in the most beautiful grounds and surrounding area, allowing us all to switch off and relax. The children (and us) loved the swimming pool. The house was well equipped floral of our needs. Sarah and James were the perfect hosts- very helpful and made lots of suggestions about where to visit in the local and extended area. It was a wonderful visit- highly recommended!

Perfect location and home

I can't recommend this holiday accommodation enough - it is gorgeous, great value, lovely atmosphere, and the location is excellent for the large lakes (Foret d'Orient and Lac du Der) which we visited every day. The cottage itself was spacious and well-furnished, I particularly liked the spare power socket and lamp by every bed which is much appreciated by phone users. The pool is a good size and depth and well-maintained. The grounds are spacious and there are several options for eating outside or barbecuing. It sounds silly but being able to park under cover was a real bonus when it was over 30 degrees! Although we went as one family it would be perfect for big groups as there were multiple cottages you could rent - and space for everyone to eat together which you can't always find. They were well prepared for COVID distancing and we never felt unsafe. Thank you Sarah and James!

Lovely gite in beautiful Champagne region

Lovely gite, in gorgeous French countryside. Les Tourterelles is a beautiful barn conversion, spacious, light and comfortable. The shared pool made for friendships to be built over the week of our stay. The lovely hosts, Sarah and James, could not have been more kind - from croissants and champagne supply to helping us out in a family crisis - they are fabulous.

A lovely place to stay in a beautiful setting

We had a fabulous holiday at Les Tourterelles in the Champagne region. The property was in a small village off the beaten track, but everything was within easy reach in a car. The property itself was finished to a very high standard and had everything we could have wished for. The hosts were charming and helpful. The atmosphere was informal and relaxing. The pool area was fantastic ~ safe and inviting. The area in the height of summer isn't busy, so if you want hurly burly, try something else, but if you like quiet rural France, this is perfect.

Wonderful Family Retreat

My husband and I just spent a week with 2 of his sisters and their husbands in this lovely gite. The property is immaculately cared for and included many amenities which made our stay quite comfortable. The surroundings are very serene which provides for great rest and relaxation. It is also situated where many day trips are within a comfortable driving distance. I would highly recommend this gite for family gatherings or just a nice getaway!

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Lacey

Host profile image
James a chartered builder and Sarah, who worked in IT as a Client Director, both British, had a dream of renovating a group of old barns to create a holiday haven and with La Ferme des Tourterelles in Eclance, they certainly found such a project. It has taken over 10 years to get to lovingly restore all the old buildings to life. They are now tackling their own home!

Why they chose this property

It was a great project based on lovely limestone buildings and wooden frames. Whilst almost a ruin, it gave a clean template to create modern interiors whilst maintain the character of the old buildings. It is set on the edge of a small village in the champagne region with glorious views from their land which was large enough to build a big swimming pool. It was also only 4 hours drive from Calais so it is in easy driving distance for guests to join them (as well as to get back to the UK to see family and friends).

What makes this property unique

Watch the sun set over the forests and fields from the terrace. Hear the cranes as they fly by twice a year in their V formation marking the seasons. Likewise, watch the swallows as they rest on our gutters and roofs in the early morning waiting for their breakfast and suddenly swooping down throughout our courtyard as if a conductor waved their baton for them to start. Get drawn into the huge skies at night trying to identify the constellations and catching sight of the shooting stars. Watch the bats come out to feed in the early evening as you start to prepare your BBQ's (no they will not be looking at your food!). Walk down the courtyard and be enveloped by the aromas of the roses, lavender and honeysuckle. We hope you love these experiences.
