About this property

Les Chouettes - La Ferme des Tourterelles, Champagne Country

Les Chouettes (The Owls) has been converted from the old milking barn into a large contemporary dwelling of for eight (or ten people). The limestone walls have been kept partly exposed in the sitting room (and downstairs bedroom) which with the wood burner nestling in the chimney place provides additional ambience. There is a well equipped kitchen opening up to the dining room making meal times a social event. The windows look out onto the farm courtyard with the trellis work of clematis, honeysuckle and roses.

There are two main bedrooms with king size beds and satellite TV along with ensuite bath/shower rooms. One is situated on the ground floor, designed to be wheelchair friendly. The other two twin bedrooms have two single beds though each are large enough to accommodate a third bed if requested. The twin bedrooms share a shower room and a wash room, each with their own toilets. The first floor has an oak style wooden floor.

A large terrace is accessible from the dining room and the courtyard of La Ferme des Tourterelles.

Set on the borders of a regional park and champagne vineyards, La Ferme des Tourterelles provides an oasis of calm. Les Chouettes is one of four cottages. Each have their own private terrace surrounded by honeysuckles and roses. They line a courtyard and all have access to the large garden and outdoor heated swimming pool which have fabulous views of the rolling hills of forest and arable fields.

The high season generally starts from the 2nd - 3rd week of May by which time, the pool should be heated; finishing after the first week of September. Whilst we have a pool heating system, due to its size it takes a while to heat up, the speed of which much depends on the weather. Regardless, for those booking either side of the high season, you are welcome to use the pool though we can't predict that the pool will be up 26°C, our target.

You can relax on one of the many terraces, play games such a table-tennis or boules.

BBQ's are available at your disposal as is the fire pit. The open night skies are perfect for stargazing and sighting shooting stars. Les Chouettes. For young children, there is a little cabin, picnic bench and swings. Games are available both indoors and outdoors.

La Ferme des Tourterelles at Eclance: We are situated in Eclance on the borders of the champagne producing region and the ParkRegional Naturel of the Forest d'Orient. Eclance is a small village nestling in a large clearing surrounded by woods and rolling countryside. It is predominantly a village based on agriculture. La Ferme des Tourterelles used to house dairy cattle whose milk was used by the Eclance cheese maker to make a cheese well known in these parts. Whilst we have been able to revive at least the farm buildings, the cheese maker is now no longer in existance.

Our gardens and pool look out onto the forest of the Regional Park, with the forests and its wildlife protected as a Natura 2000 site. Wildlife is abundant with the seasons greeting different birds as they migrate across our region. Deer and wild boar can also be seen.

There is much to occupy you from visiting the medieval towns of Bar-sur-Aube or Troyes, shopping in the biggest factory outlets at Troyes, having fun at Nigloland the 3rd largest amusement parks in France, following the champagne route discovering great good value champagnes, walking or cycling in the countryside, or partaking in the water sports on the lakes in the Regional Park nearby.

For those living in towns or cities, being set beside a farm, this is a great place to discover the country life. Being close to the Burgundy region, some guests go off on day trips to explore the vineyards and towns of Chablis, Beaune and the Côte d'or, as well as the other Champagne producing regions.

For those who book a week at La Ferme des Tourterelles, a bottle of champagne is on offer from our favourite champagne makers Philippe Legout from Rouvres-les-Vignes.

A Lovely Family Holiday

We had a lovely welcome to our beautiful home for a week. Sarah and James were very friendly and helpful and we enjoyed meeting them (and their cats!). The swimming pool was beautifully kept and much fun and sun was had there. There are great places to visit in the surrounding area and, of course, excellent food and wine (+ champagne). We would love to have another visit there.

Verademing

Heerlijk rustige accommodatie.

Relaxing, activity-filled holiday with friends

We were 3 couples and 1 infant looking for a place to meet up for a friends holiday during the "summer of corona". We very much lucked out with this property. Sarah was very helpful prior to our arrival and provided us with even more information than we knew what to do with. Every question we asked or assistance required was taken care of. The cottage itself was perfect for our group size and had everything necessary to cook, grill, and drink champagne. There were plenty of activities on the property and also within an hours drive (tons of champagne houses, villages to explore, amusement parks, cheese shops & farms, etc). We loved the tranquility of the house, but also the ability to take driving adventures throughout the day. Thanks Sarah & James for a lovely holiday. It's one we will be talking about for quite some time!

Wonderfully comfortable Gite

Four children under 9, parents and grandparents - a tall order for a gite to suit ev eryone but Les Chouettes certainly provides all that you'd want - space, comfort and warmth in surroundings that allow the children freedom in safety and the adults the chance to relax in beautiful surroundings. The barn has been converted with sensitivity, in very good taste with simple but really comfortable furniture, great beds with white cotton bed linen and lovely pictures. We all felt we could live there indefinitely! We were too early in the season for the swimming pool but we had a log burning stove instead, all ready to curl up with a book beside it. Sarah and James are great hosts - there if you need them and happy to chat if you need information but also happy to leave you alone.

beautiful, welcoming house in Champagne region

Following a hectic 2 days at eurodisney, what a relief to arrive at such a haven of rural tranquility! The house has been beautifully renovated and is very well equipped throughout. The beds are very comfortable and the bed linen is very luxurious! It was lovely to have a wood burning stove, and the kitchen was ideal for feeding large numbers. The owners were extremely helpful and friendly, and the whole set up was perfect for a family holiday with 4 children aged from 3-8.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Lacey

Host profile image
James and I bought this property in near ruinous state in 2003. Since then with much love and enjoyment, we turned this old farmstead and its barns into four lovely holiday cottages, as well as renovating the old farmhouse for us. Exploiting James skills as a Chartered Builder and my love of gardening, we hope to have created a lovely place for you to stay and enjoy the surrounds.

Originally from the UK but much travelled, we delight in welcoming everyone, to share in what we believe is our paradise. This is an ideal place to tour; by car, motorbike or cycle, hence one of the reasons James with his love of old cars and open roads loves this area. My love of nature, in which we are immersed, along with the rolling landscape gives me much opportunity to go walking - another past-time that I like.

Whilst we live in the farmhouse, we aim to be discrete as we see this as your home. Of course you will see us from time to time as we need to manage the gardens and pool or whilst you see James tinkering with one of his cars.

Should you ever need advice, we are here for you. Likewise should there be an emergency, we are there to provide support if we can. I love cooking and I have tried to make sure the kitchens are well equipped, but if there is something extra you need, do not hesitate to come and see us to see if we can help you out.

When we bought this property, we also took on the tenancy of Alice who had lived here since she was 13 years old tending the dairy cattle. She lived in the small house opposite us (now a store), so we learnt all about the history of the farm. Our renovations confirmed her stories of the 1st & 2nd world wars. Our farmhouse housed poorly American soldiers during the 1st world war and a German Office was billeted here during the 2nd world war.

Why they chose this property

There are a multitude of reasons why we chose this area. There is much to offer being placed on the borders of the Champagne vineyards with their UNESCO heritage classification, So our love of wines has meant a continual exploration for good champagnes at reasonable prices. Being not too far away from Burgundy also gives us an opportunity to explore further afield. Eclance is also on the border of the Parc naturel régional de la forêt d'orient, with its three large lakes and beaches, I can delight in the many walks and wildlife. Since living here, we live with the sense of the changing seasons with cranes passing over, as well as Swallows and nightingales making their home here in the summer.

Both of us love the sense of history as seen in the architecture of the medieval towns and cities of Bar-sur-Aube and Troyes. Also the landscapes, buildings and legends surrounding the Templars which originated in the Aube. For me, history came alive in discovering the exploits of Napoleon Bonaparte, where he went to school in nearby Brienne-le-Château, and conducted various battles fought all around this area.

We hope we can help you discover the area by providing an introduction and guide to geocaching, with many caches to discover based on different themes. We also provide walking routes and cycle routes from here as well as all around.

Nigloland (slang for hedgehog), a charming amusement park is only 5 minutes drive, well hidden away from us in a wooded valley. Many guests who stay here for a week or two, buy a season ticket so they can come and go through the week as they wish.

In the first instance, the property provided a great renovation project based on lovely limestone buildings and wooden frames. Whilst almost a ruin, it gave a clean template to create modern interiors whilst maintain the character of the old buildings.

What makes this property unique

Watch the sun set over the forests and fields from the terrace. Hear the cranes as they fly by twice a year in their V formation marking the seasons. Likewise, watch the swallows as they rest on our gutters and roofs in the early morning waiting for their breakfast and suddenly swooping down throughout our courtyard as if a conductor waved their baton for them to start. Get drawn into the huge skies at night trying to identify the constellations and catching sight of the shooting stars. Watch the bats come out to feed in the early evening as you start to prepare your BBQ's (no they will not be looking at your food!). You may be lucky to see the mother hedgehog take her young out at night. Learn about farm life with bring especially during harvest. We have had guests put their chairs out along the back fence to see the tractors at work! Walk down the courtyard and be enveloped by the aromas of the roses, lavender and honeysuckle. We hope you love these experiences.

By choosing to stay here at La Ferme des Tourterelles, in more than one gîte, groups of friends and extended families can pick the best of all worlds by being able to holiday together without being on top of each other. For those seeking moments of quiet or solitude, there is the space outdoors and your 'own home' to retreat to! Each gîte has their own private terrace and due to the many different places to visit, and everyone having a different holiday rhythm, many guests exclaim that at times it is like they have the place to themselves. Our cottages are all classed four stars by the Prefecture/Tourist Office reflecting the quality of our set up and the facilities/amenities available.

Being situated between the A26 & A5 motorways, travelling here is made easy by car. Being approximately 4 hours drive from Calais, this also means many from the UK can travel to Eclance as their holiday destination in one day.

We hope you have a fabulous time here.
