About this property

Adirondack-Style/Cottage-Beautiful Lake & Mountain Views-Peaceful!

“ROARING BEAR” cabin a fully restored and updated Adirondack style cabin originally built in 1922, situated on a pine forested hillside overlooking East Twin Lake- Lake Washining. It has a relaxed, attractive cabin decor featuring quality rugs, bedding, linens, quilts, antiques and original artwork.

Adjacent to a large 1500+ acre nature preserve, the cottage is private, but not remote (about 1200 ft distant above the lake), yet away from and above the typical noise of a Summer Lake cabins and close nearby cottages. A private dock and swim float are down at the lake and the rental includes a canoe or kayak.

There are two large (unscreened) porches at the cabin to enjoy the beautiful sunsets, lake and mountain views facing westward to the southern Berkshire Mountains (Taconic Range).

Power boat and pontoon boat rentals, breakfast and lunch are available at O’Hara’s Landing, just ¼ mile from the dock and cabin.
A complete new kitchen has recently been installed with stainless gas stove cook top, cabinets, corian counters and double stainless sink, microwave, convection oven, dishwasher, butler refrigerator and wine cooler. The water pressure system has also been enhanced to provide comfortable amenities, but preserve its woodsy cabin appeal.

Twin Lakes is situated nearby the Salisbury/Taconic, CT, South Edgemont/Sheffield/Great Barrington, MA areas with a wide range of great restaurants, equine centers, performing arts, music and dance festivals and chamber arts programs including Tanglewood, Music Mountain, Jacobs Pillow, Sharon Playhouse, Infinity Music Hall and Yale Summer Summer Music Programs at the Battell Stovkel Estate in nearby Norwalk. There are also a number of local vineyards nearby offering an opportunity to try local area wines of superb qualities while meeting new or old friends.

In addition to myriad water sports, kayaking, canoeing and fantastic fishing opportunities on Twin Lakes, there are hiking trails on site adjacent to the cabin as well as numerous nearby access points to the Appalachian Mountain Trail system within 2 miles.

Twin Lakes is an exceptionally unique area, with a wide variety of amenities which has largely been undeveloped by the building of new Lakeside "mega homes" and clear cutting of properties to enhance owners personal lifestyles and views while destroying everyone else’s which has occurred in many other formerly beautiful lake areas.

Beware
Primitive at best.. cabin/driveway/dock area. Everything in desperate need of maintenance. Cannot keep food inside or out(where refrig is) due to ants/bears/spiders. No A/C or TV.. furniture (inside and out) all in desperate need of updating. Does have a view in one direction.. albeit shady and damp.

Just far enough away
That half-mile of rugged driveway really makes you feel like you are leaving civilization for something simpler, pure, and primitive. Although the rustic cabin has all the basic and a few not-so-basic comforts, the real pleasure of the place is the immersion in nature: views of deer cavorting from the porch, fireflies flickering in the treetops, birdsong at daybreak, summer rain on the roof, the smell of pine sap, the taste of fresh berries ripening at the forest's edge. Can't wait to return!

The location is stunning and house cozy and well-appointed.
The location of this cabin is stunning - the views of the twin lakes are clear from the porch, living room and bedrooms. Cabin is simple and clean and has everything you could need - great place for grilling and eating outdoors. Our kids (ages 5 and 7) also loved it. We spent our afternoons down at the dock everyday to close the day. Perfect launching spot for nearby towns and attractions!

CUTEST LITTLE CABIN
My husband and I rented this cottage for a long weekend July 2013. This place was terrific...we spent a long weekend here and enjoyed every minute of it! It was super secluded and quiet, exactly what we were looking for coming from the crowded and noisy city. It is definitely a little rustic but that is exactly what makes it soo charming and cute. The view of the lake was spectacular, and each evening we would watch the sun set over the lake. We swam and fished on the lake during the day, then walked back up to the house for dinner. There is a little farm stand very close by where you can purchase fresh produce (its the cutest little stand!) and the kitchen at the cabin is fully equipped with everything you could ever need to cook. The owners Susan & John seem like lovely people, and they were incredibly helpful and easy to work with. This is such a lovely place with great access to everything...beautiful surroundings...a fun place to stay! We would definitely come back again and are looking forward to the next time make it up there!

Empty Nesters Retreat
After coming up to Twin Lakes for 26 years with children and friends, we now find ourselves able to come here as a couple to sit quietly on the beautiful front porch watching the sun set. The pictures that John and Susan supplied on the web sight show the authentic beauty of the interior design. The sense of history that surrounds the cabin in the Litchfield Hills is breathtaking. It is an amazing experience to watch the deer walk across the front, listen to the birds chirping and the sense of quiet isolation that surrounds the cabin. Everyone associated with the cabin was accomodating and welcoming from the Property Manager, Melody who met us at O'Hara's in the pouring rain; to Robin, the incredibly resourceful general contractor who showed up immediately when we needed him as well as the caretakers of the beautiful Isola Bella Island across the Lake. The owners were also very attentive and responsive and very welcoming. Although the long driveway leading up to the cabin is certainly daunting initially, with it's hairpin turns and narrowness of the road, it is manageable although we never drove up and down at night. The cabin was ideal for our needs as a couple - the kitchen facilities were luxurious for a cabin in the woods and the shower was great and the double bed was very comfortable! We had a wonderful and restful 2 weeks here and not only would we recommend it to another couple, we look forward to the opportunity to return again next year.

An Oasis in the Woods.
I spent a week here while visiting friends and family in the area, and had a wonderful time. The cabin is amazing and beautifully appointed, and is remote enough to be very private but not so much that I, a single woman, would feel too isolated. I spent evenings on the porch enjoying the lovely views of the lake and took full advantage of the private dock during the day. The walk to and from the lake was nice and I had no problem navigating the driveway with my truck. The owners John and Susan were extremely accommodating as well as helpful in answering any questions I had. Melody the property manager was informative and friendly and did a great job getting the place ready for my arrival. My security deposit was returned promptly and without issue. If you're looking for a secluded spot to get away from it all with a charming historic atmosphere plus great dining and recreation in the area, I absolutely recommend Roaring Bear Cabin. I hope to visit again very soon.

Fantastic long weekend on the lake
We visited with another couple for a long wedding and had a great visit. The cabin is just beautiful. We loved it right away. It has a really special quality, a sense of history and family in the structure and the decor. The view is truly breath-taking. The owners were friendly, responsive and informative. The drive up is probably not for a smart car which is what we almost rented by accident, luckily the car rental place had changed our car for a small suv. Our friends made it up fine in a regular sedan. Slow and easy as the owner explained to us and any one can do it :) Just an amazing property and we had such a lovely, memorable stay.

Interesting Cabin
We stayed in this interesting and private cabin while hiking on the Appalachian Trail. We hiked during the day and used the cabin as a base at night. The cabin itself is delightful with a great view of the lake and a nice porch where we ate dinner in the evening. The decor reflects the history of the cabin and it's place in the lives of its owners. If you need amenities like AC and a dishwasher look elsewhere; but if you want a great getaway place in the woods where you can unwind and relax, look no further.

Private Get-away, Stunning Views
My girlfriend and I rented this cottage last July 2008 as a quiet two week get-away. We were looking for a place where we would have access to a variety outdoor activities and the summertime Berkshires cultural scene. The cottage is at the top of a beautiful cut field just on the margin with the woods - a great bird-watching spot. There are stunning westerly views to Twin Lakes below and the mountain ridge in the distance. The private access road is just over a 1/2 mile long and has a few bumps but was easily managed by us and visiting friends with a variety of rides including a low-slung Porsche Boxster. We initially left our 15' Whaler at the bottom of the driveway in an open parking area well off the street and later at the dock. The lake and the private dock are a pleasant 6-8 minute walk down the hill through the field. On days we didn't want to walk or had too many coolers and lake toys, we drove the car down to the lake. The lake is crystal clear with an excellent bass and brown trout fishery. Kayaks can get access to the second (West Twin) lake under a low set of bridges that blocks access to most power boats. The description of the cottage is accurate. It's best described as Ralph Lauren rustic. It's tastefully decorated and is a comfortable place for two couples or a family of 4-6 max. The covered porch with lake & mountain views was a favorite place to watch sunsets or the T-storms rolling in from New York state. The cabin was professionally cleaned and well maintained given that it is a vintage cabin. No issues with the deposit. We would recommend this property to those who enjoy the outdoors and are looking for a quiet and romantic hide-away.

About the host

Host profile image
The cabin was built by our grandfather, John Hunter Stearns, in 1922. We are always in awe when we drive up the .7 mile access road and realize that it was built at a time when constructing such a road up the side of a hill was extremely diffucult and yet it it has served all of his descendants so well for many generations as has the cabin.
The cabin sits nestled under towering pines, with amazing, unique panoramic mountain and lake views- bathed in peace and quiet.

Why they chose this property

While the cabin maintains it's charming rustic exterior, the interior has been upgraded to provide modern conveniences and comfort without compromising or changing it's authentic appeal.

We have been stewards of the property for over 40 years. Our children have learned to fish and use power boats here. We were married 25 years ago on 'Isola Bella' (beautiful Island) in the center of the lake at a most lovely event where we transported all of our guests to the island by classic powerboats.
It is a natural getaway where you are afforded privacy without compromising expansive views of the entire southern Berkshire mountain range.
