About the property
Half Moon is a charming detached, stone cottage, located at the edge of the village of Membury in East Devon's Black Down Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Set in the 8-acre estate of the owners' Grade II-listed, Georgian country house, the cottage offers a tranquil and remote countryside stay, yet is only several miles away from the Jurassic Coast and its bustling towns. Half Moon Cottage makes a wonderful escape for two if you're seeking rest and relaxation.
The space
Half Moon Cottage is single-storey and offers comfortable accommodation with a traditional feel. Throughout the cottage, areas of the original stone walls remain exposed to let the period character shine through, while the light colour palette gives it a bright feel. You'll also discover pictures and ornaments relating to aircraft around the home, which is a nod to the estate's heritage. In 1919 the White family bought the estate and went on to be pioneers in the manufacture of early aeroplanes.
An open-plan living area features a kitchen/sitting/dining room with two armchairs, a dining table for two, TV and a fireplace offering a cosy place to kick off your shoes, enjoy a meal together and feel at home. The bedroom has a double bed and an en suite shower room, plus enough storage for clothes and bags. From the bedroom there are lovely views of the countryside to admire and the location is so quiet, that you're pretty much guaranteed a fantastic night's sleep.
Outside there is a private patio where you can continue to drool over the views out across Devon, whilst enjoying a romantic meal or evening drinks on warm, summer evenings.
Guest access
Half Moon Cottage is one of five cottages set on the owners' 8-acre estate and on arrival, the owners who live in the Georgian country house on the estate, will be available to meet you. Guests are welcome to enjoy walks in the estate's grounds that include a garden with mature trees and a large pond, as well as a wooded area and fields. It's a totally peaceful place and as such guests are asked to respect the air of tranquillity.
Sustainability
The estate in which Half Moon Cottage is located is a haven for wildlife including deer and a range of birds. The owners are keen to help nature flourish by, for example, maintaining the natural pond and ensuring there are bee-friendly plants.
We plant a tree for every booking we make to help offset some of the carbon emissions generated by our stays.
