About this property

Luxury country retreat with stunning sea and rain forest views

Perched on a hill in the centre of Parlatuvier, self-catering Tamarind House villa provides breathtaking, uninterrupted views of both the oldest protected rain forest in the Western hemisphere and one of the most attractive beaches along Tobago’s Caribbean coastline. This rental villa with optional separate apartment is a thoughtfully designed and constructed log house. It is a perfect holiday retreat. From the verandas, pool, terrace and garden, guests can relax and watch the day go by - fishing boats leaving early and arriving with the catch mid afternoon, the daily migration of orange winged parrots, cocricos, egrets and corn birds to and from their favourite roosts, and much more besides. With the beach an easy stroll of 4 or 5 minutes away there is ample opportunity to swim and snorkel amongst coral reefs fringing the beach.

Worth the drive

Our family of 6 adults stayed at Tamrind house. The house itself was VERY comfortable, with an amazing veranda. Owner Nick was very flexible about accommodating our arrival. Care taker Vicky, was wonderful, and her mom Sharon cooked for use for several nights. Wonderful spot for divers as the dive shop was right on the beach.

Great house in a great location.

We were looking for a property situated where we could experience life in a non touristy area and that is what this property provides. There were only two of us staying but the layout of the house is such that it would easily accomodate three couples each able to have their own bathroom. Previous reviews have given details of friendly local people and whats nearby so I wont add much detail but with regards to the location you do need to plan when to get fuel and perhaps do a big shop near the airport before driving to the house. The hosts guidance prior to arrival was great covering all these points. We often travel round quite extensively on our holidays and had decided to try and have a relaxing trip on this occasion and the house and location was perfect for this as it was very easy to live in and to enjoy the outside space and excellent views. Would definitely book it again if we return to Tobago.

Gorgeous house in a spectacular location

We have just spent a wonderful week at Tamarind House. Everything about our stay was perfect, the house is very well equipped, the house manager was easily contactable and helpful and of course the location is breathtaking! If you like to get away from the crowds then Parlatuvier is a great destination. We walked to the waterfall just behind Tamarind House and swam in the rock pool and bought fish from the very friendly fishermen at the jetty in the afternoons. The small local shop in the village is also incredibly well stocked.

Starting 2020 with family, rest and relaxation!

This is the 2nd time staying at this beautiful property. It is situated across from the rain forest in the front of the house and the ocean views from the back porch. We absolutely love the location. The gardens are full of birds and other little creatures. Everything about this home has been well thought out right down to a supplying a rolling pin and cooler. And Yes we used both. Sharon the property manager is a true gem and always so thoughtful. She is a wealth of information and we enjoyed another meal from her the first night of our stay. Our stay was 8 days and I stilled wished we were staying longer. This property gave us much needed time for rest and relaxation from our busy city lives. Thank you again Lesley . We are already looking forward to our next stay.

Beautiful Parlatuvier Bay

“Tamarind House” is perched above beautiful Parlatuvier Bay on Tobago’s West coast. Spacious and well-equiped, we found it a perfect place to relax and chill. The views are amazing, out to sea or the near hills where flocks of parrots fly past. The villa is accessed by a (very) steep driveway. Unless you’re young and fit, too steep to walk, so you’ll drive down to the bay, a matter of two minutes. The shoreline is pretty and usually empty, but the water shelves quickly, so watch your footing! Our personal favourite beach is ten minutes south, Englishman’s Bay. Busier, but only by Tobago standards, it is picture-perfect and never crowded. The next bay down is Castara, where we stayed fifteen years back. Also pretty, we were saddened to find that most of the beachfront eateries we liked did not survive Covid. But there are small takeaway places, and, if you want to splurge, Caribbean Kitchen up at Castara Retreats. Great food. Some other reviewers noted that the island locals like their music loud. Really, really loud. Our second night had a big ‘do’ pumping out the decibels. It turns out the party was a wake! When your friends go, you celebrate. Hard to argue with. Tamarind House is perfect for people who want to escape, and Parlatuvier Bay is one of the most serene and laid-back places on the island. Great for nature lovers and bird fanciers. We’d go back in a heartbeat.

Hidden Paradise !

If You are looking to get away from all the city life and just RELAX this place is for you. We found exactly what we were looking for in this property. This Property is an hour away from the airport and backs up to the rainforest. The views are amazing and the sound of the crashing waves fill the air. This villa is located on top a hill within the village. Very local Vibe not at all commercial or full of other tourists. From the moment we stepped out of the car there was a sweet aroma of a flower that filled the air. Sharon the housekeeper met us at the house shortly after we arrived with the welcome meal she had prepared for us. She was very delightful and full of information that made our stay very comfortable. She is a wealth of information about the area and history of this home. she also called the house to checked in on us several times during our stay. Lesley the owner mentions many locals in her recommendations to contact for different things we found this very helpful and used many of them from taylor rentals, (we dealt with Bruce this wife and son Jadon ) Our local rainforest guide was Fitz Roy who was very knowledgeable of all the birds and creatures in the rainforest. We did go on a few hikes including to the waterfall that is almost directly across the street and a 5 minute walk down a trail. Although spending time at the house we did see more birds and creatures than on the hikes we did. There were many local beaches and swimming holes just beware most of them are not as calm as pigeon point and have under tows that will pull you out and toss you right back to shore depending how rough the water is. Exercise extreme caution. Overall our stay was exactly what we wanted and we didn't want to leave. We Definitely will be back the next time we are in Tobago. Thank you Lesley for sharing your piece of paradise with us.

Wonderful

Tamarind House was everything we hoped for and much more. Furnished comfortably and to a very high standard we loved everything about staying there. Lesley, the owner, answered all our questions very efficiently which we greatly appreciated. Sharon, who looks after the house, was absolutely delightful, extremely helpful and prepared a lovely meal for us on our first evening. We would recommend Tamarind House to anyone visiting Tobago.

Stunning Location

Tamarind House is a well appointed villa overlooking the beautiful fishing village and bay of Parlatuvia and a very short walk to the beach or rain forest. The people are very friendly and always happy to chat and help. My only small niggle, and it is a small one, is the constant boom, boom of music from various sources which can, for me at least, spoil the otherwise traquil beauty. But hey, it's the Caribbean! All in all, thoroughly recommended.

A month in tropical paradise. 4.5 stars easily

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were taking a break from the cold Winter and required internet to work every day as we were not on holiday but working remotely. About 65% of the time it worked. It took us a few days to wind down to the Tobago pace and stop expecting efficient service in places etc. It took us a little longer to get used to the Tobago noise, a lot of which happens directly around Tamarind house. If it isn’t a festival or funeral wake (these last 9 days) it might be the Parlatuvier Lighthouse ministry of praise belting out Caribbean gospel for hours or the school below having a steel pan music lesson. Or the local favourite- an open car with massive speakers facing outwards - these stop anywhere and bad luck if it happens to be just outside Tamarind House. Strimming at about 5:30 am almost every day- to keep the jungle off the streets. Yet we loved it, once we learned how to “chill”. The house is beautiful and very clean and comfortable. The owners with help from Sharon have thought of everything to make for a perfect stay. The garden is beautiful- we saw more birds in the garden than in the rainforest nearby. The deck overlooking Parlatuvier bay is wonderful. Insects not much of a problem at all. No spiders. Weather wonderful, not oppressively hot. Finishes in the house are good but not so perfect that you are afraid to put a cup down- user friendly. Our advice would be to bring your own good coffee if you like coffee, and maybe a few other home comforts as the grocery stores are few and far between. Stock up well on your arrival when you do the airport stop at the supermarket as you will not want to go again once you know how long and bumpy the roads are and how beautiful Parlatuvier area is by comparison to the rest of the Island (all of which is beautiful). Bring snorkelling gear as you can’t easily buy it in Tobago. Buy fruit and veg from the roadside on your way from the airport before you reach Northside Road. There are no vendors further along and the taxi won’t stop unless you ask him to - this is your chance to get proper food. Sharon is great, her cooking is pricey but she is very helpful throughout the stay. Best restaurant nearby was Caribbean Kitchen or for lunch, Castara on the beach near to the Boathouse. Expect to wait about 2 hours for food though. Not a problem- best snorkelling here and Arnos Vale ( by boat trip) and watched about 8 stingrays within meters from lunch table. Englishman’s Bay also fantastic!

perfect for a family getaway

The house itself is even better than what the website shows, it has everything u will need while on vacation in Parlatuvier, and the view is amazing. The pool is a nice complement to the beach. Perfect to spent time with family while cooking (bbq). Sharon is amazing as well and keep everything meticulously clean and organised. She will cook delicious local food for u if desired. We are a family of 6 and the house was never crowded. 4 to 5 min walk from the beach and local small store where u will be able to find first order items and beer. Keep on mind that Parlatuvier is located 1 hr away from crown point where the airport is located and so is Pigeon point, the most turistic beach. It is a rural comunity, do not spect to find fancy stuffs, but u will enjoy Tobago as u will not do in any other Area. Locals are super friendly. Driving can be challange, but I will recomend to rent a car anyway, it's not that bad. The Area is 100% safe. We spent 2 days in Crown point and that was enough to enjoy most atractions. Actually the beach in Parlatuvier is even better than pigeon point, just deeper.

Perfect relaxation

We stayed at Tamarind House over Christmas and New Year, what an amazing place to relax and unwind !!! The house is absolutely perfect and the view from the veranda is exactly as seen in pictures, it surely must be the best location in Parlatuvier. There are not a lot of shops, as we were pre warned, but Imbies Shop at the jetty have a good supply and we even rented a car through them too !! We went on an amazing rainforest tour with Fitzroy Quamina, he is lovely but to be honest we had everything visiting in our garden that we saw on the trek, bliss. Big shout out to Sharon(housekeeper), she is fabulous and miss our chats already. Look out for Alana (?), she lives 2 houses along and was often selling fresh bread and local produce in front of her house, the cheese and potato pies are to die for. We all want to come back, so hopefully see you soon. Thankyou for letting us stay at your Place in Paradise xxx

stunning property and location

Tamarind House is simply stunning. Beautifully furnished and equipped. Sharon the Housekeeper was there to meet us and cooked a wonderful meal of Chicken, lentils, salad and potato salad. There was so much it fed us for 3 days! The welcome pack provided was very useful so we didnt have to worry about taking any extras. The house and pool were absolutely perfect.... the views over Parlatuvier bay were jaw dropping, as was rainforest to the rear. Evenings were spent watching the sundown and then the fireflies dancing...bliss. Rural Tobago at its best. Very highly recommended

Lovely house in wonderful location

We are a family of six (with 4 young people aged from late teens to mid-twenties), and Tamarind House provided a fantastic base for our two-week holiday. We all loved it from the moment we arrived- a beautiful airy house set just above the stunning little fishing village of Parletuvier. All the rooms are a good size, and there are numerous places to sit and read or watch the wildlife in or out of the shade throughout the day and evening. The kitchen is an excellent space to work in and very well stocked, and the 'outside kitchen', poolside, has a very good gas grill, so we had a great time cooking fish brought from the fishermen mid-afternoon. Why did we love it so much? Well, there are few more heavenly spots on Tobago, where the rain-forest dips down to the sea, where the local people are so welcoming and friendly, where we could snorkle before breakfast each day, and where the wildlife flowed in and out of the house- birds, bats, lizards....also, we are a diving family, and were able to easily reach key dive sites around Tobago, and we loved the local waterfall and rain-forest with abundant bird- and other wildlife. Sharon is an excellent housekeeper- the house was always clean and tidy after her visits and she was hugely helpful in introducing us and giving us directions- her eggs were delicious too! Hot tips: Shauvanne's fruit and veg stall 500m beyond Glasgow's Bar, and Vaness's little local diner, turn left towards Bloody Bay and immediately on the left, as well, of course as the fish from the jetty. We can't recommend the house highly enough if you love reefs and rain forests, tranquility and passing time with local people; try a house in the south-west of the island if you prefer nightlife or glitzy restaurants!

Stunning views surrounded by local character

We had a wonderful stay in beautiful Parlatuvier. The facilities are so well thought out, from the cds and movies provided (with hilarious reviews included!) to the great big fridge freezer with ice maker - and of course the refreshing air con in the bedrooms. This property is fantastically maintained, spotlessly clean on arrival. We were cooked a delicious meal (BBQ chicken, homemade salad and creamy rice&beans to die for) for when we arrived along with the warmest of welcomes from Sharon, the housekeeper. Sharon called us the next day to offer advice on trips and recommended a brilliant, knowledgeable guide, Fitzroy, to take us into the rainforest on an experience of a lifetime. We saw hummingbirds, trapdoor spider nests, parrots galore as well as about 20 small to huge waterfalls through the forest. It's probably the best value for money day out on any holiday we've ever had. Not to mention Fitzroy is a blast, really fun company. The roads are a bit bonkers, so only hire a car if you're accustomed to driving overseas, the guides and local people that you interact with are all SO generous so getting about we found no problem at all. The phone in the house is surrounded with local taxi cab and tour guide cards etc. The larder of items (bread, eggs, bacon) etc. when you arrive is a lovely touch, and we found the kitchen had every appliance and utensil etc. we needed for the holiday, we cooked most evenings, including fish freshly caught and brought in on the jetty by the local neighbours. We were a little daunted at first, but they couldn't have been friendlier, asking us which of the fish we wanted and how many steaks to cut for us (all descaled and chopped up for you ready to BBQ!). The BBQ was easy to use, the water pressure for the shower perfect, the pool is clean and just the right size for relaxing and enough to do a few "I'm on holiday" strokes, nothing too strenuous. Finally, that view. The pictures don't do it justice. We were speechless for the first hour of sitting with a beer looking out at the sunset across the bay. Honestly the view from the deck will live with me for a lifetime. We found ourselves out there for breakfast and every evening. When our little boy is a older we'll be coming back out here with some family - the dining room table is huge and there's lots of seating - all comfy and in great condition. We really can't enough positive things about what a stunning holiday this was, we can't wait to go back. Tom & Joey 2017

Chill out at Tamarind House

We were made very welcome by Sharon even though we were a late evening arrival. The house was clean and well furnished both inside and out. Lovely shower pressure even when all the family were there. The bedrooms and shower rooms were all well proportioned and the towels were a generous size and the dryer in the laundry room was great for enabling a last day swim. The shop by the jetty was friendly and has lots of cold beer. You needed to go a little further for fresh fruit and veg but we had fresh fish from the boats at the jetty and the shop had frozen chicken. The Glasgow bar, on the hill, has an amazing view across the bay and the next 2 beaches have bars with food on the beach. Nature came to us with lizards, bats, dragon flies, birds of every shape and size and the neighbour's chickens. We awoke to the forest dawn chorus and later a tardy rooster from next door greeted us. The pool is great as it is a salt water system so no sore eyes and is warm from the sun but cool enough to be refreshing. We had the house and apartment and there was enough room for us all to eat at the big dinning table or escape into small groups. After enjoying the intensity of Carnival in Trinidad this was the perfect setting for a relaxing break.

a beautiful place to relax

Tamarind house is really a good location to spend relaxed holidays there. The huge house( (we were 3 instead of 6) is built on the top of a hill with a wonderful view over the bay of parlatuvier. The pool behind the house is great, but it has no handrail to get in. We enjoyed also the big terrace. The garden with all the exotic flowers and animals (humming birds, lizzards, goats, male chickens, who waked us in the morning, dogs, we also saw a tegu and a gecko once....) is amazing. The access road is a little bit steep for older persons to walk down or come up. And the staircase behind the house is also without a handrail at the last three steps. That`s a problem for a 86 years old person. The washing machine is rusty, but it worked. I missed a flexible tube in the shower. I also looked for a cool box for our excursions, but I couldn't find one. I hate waxed table-cloth, it had a lot of mouldy spots.I should have removed it myself! Sharon the housekeeper was very nice and she cooked us a wonderful meal. On the whole we enjoyed our stay at beautiful Tamarind house.

Superbly equipped!

Our stay at Tamarind House Villa this August was perfect. I totally appreciated the perfectly equipped kitchen as I was doing my own catering. Setting was nice, the sea bathing delightful, the pool pleasant, the only thing lacking was breeze. I suppose it 's just that time of year when it's still. A very comfortable dwelling otherwise. The homemade soaps added a nice touch and so did the great library of music and movies. I highly recommend this very spacious Villa if wanting to stay in a peaceful part of Tobago, surrounded by gorgeous tropical forest and emerald Caribbean waters.

Our favorite escape! 3 visits so far...

We returned to Parletuvier and the Tamarind house for the third time this spring! After getting married there last year, we booked yet another trip. I can not say enough good things about this house and Lesley, who owns it - and Sharon who helps caretake. The house was, as it always is, in wonderful condition - beautiful, bright, airy, clean. It is a delight to visit and we had a perfect stress-free trip. The condition of everything is always great - clean towels and lots of them, crisp sheets, plenty of books and a great stock of cooking utensils. Sharon stocked the fridge for us since we were arriving late and did a perfect job. She also cooked a simple, but amazing meal - and we had leftovers for days! The pool was clean and the grounds are immaculate. We also found a GREAT new convenience store at the top of the hill - a full selection of produce and all sorts of big-city items right here in our tiny fishing village. Great to see Imbie and Miss V at the Jetty market, cold beers, ice creams and lots of laughs! Also had a great time walking the back stairs to Glassgows as our "workout" on the way to get a cold shandy and play cards! This is our favorite getaway and we will hopefully be coming again next year. There is truly no place like it! And Lesley, Nick and Sharon are the most wonderful hosts!

Why they chose this property

We built this property in 2006 and it was the realisation of a dream to have a comfortable second home down there. We believe we have found possibly one of the best views and locations on the island. We love the fact too that is sufficiently far away from the built up touristy end of the island. This allows us to reconnect to the simplicity of island life and the beautiful nature that surrounds us.

What makes this property unique

Extraordinary view and location.
Englishman`s Bay, once voted in the top 10 beaches in the world is 10 mins. drive away.
Amazing view of a protected tropical rainforest from the Villa`s back veranda. Seeing the daily toing and froing of parrots, rufus breasted chakalaka's ( the national bird) along with other wonderfully coloured tropical birds within the immediate surrounds of the villa.
