Region: A E Housman once wrote that Shropshire was “the quietest place under the sun” and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.
Town: The rural community of Trefonen is located between the historic English border town of Oswestry and the Welsh community of Llanhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, where the highest single drop waterfall in the United Kingdom is located. There is a pub and a general store in this quaint community, and Offa's Dyke passes right through the centre of town. It is adjacent to the location where scenes from the popular 1995 film "The Englishman Who Went up a Hill but Came Down a Mountain" were shot. Wonderful picturesque walks and cycle paths, including as the Berwyn Ridge Pathway, the Offa's Dyke Path, and through the gorgeous Tanat and Ceiriog Valleys, can be found all throughout the area and extend into the Berwyn Mountain Range. Travel to the nearby market town of Ellesmere or the riverside town of Llangollen, home to the World Heritage Site Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Chirk and Powis Castles and Gardens, Erddig, and Attingham Park. The Welsh mountains and coast, as well as the beautiful Lakes Vyrnwy and Bala, are just a short drive away, as are the historic towns of Shrewsbury and Chester, both of which were founded by the Romans. Trefonen is a great starting point from which to explore the rest of Mid Wales and perhaps Shropshire.
