Town: Beaumaris, a famous historic town on Anglesey, sits on the Menai Strait and offers breath-taking views of the Snowdonia mountain range and its sunrises. There is a mediaeval castle there that dates back to the reign of Edward I; it is now a World Heritage site; and there is also a Victorian pier, gaol, and courthouse there, and is also a major centre for yachting. Beaumaris has preserved much of its mediaeval street layout, adding to the town's rich historical significance. The town's atmosphere, architectural variety, period range, scale, open areas, roof types, and general quality all play significant roles in shaping its unique identity. The town has a wide variety of stores, restaurants, and bars, as well as the chance to go fishing and on boat tours. There is also a golf course in the vicinity. Red Wharf Bay is a large bay along the coast; in Welsh, it's known as Traeth Coch (Red Beach), and it's known for its beautiful sunsets. At low tide, nearly 25 square kilometres (10 square miles) of sand are exposed, making the bay safe for swimming, ideal for fun with kids and families, and suitable for fishing and long, scenic strolls. Port Holyhead is a bit further away, but it offers frequent ferry service to Dublin. Beaumaris, situated as it is on the south coast of the picturesque Isle of Anglesey, is a good central base from which to explore the rest of Wales, including the spectacular mountains of Snowdonia.
