A few days near Durness

This is a stunning property, designed to take in the beautiful, uninterrupted and ever-changing view across the Kyle of Durness. The cottage is modern, well-equipped and very clean and well-maintained. We were lucky with gorgeous weather but this wouldalso be a lovely place to light the wood burner and 'hunker down' in bad weather

Return to Shore Cottage

Our 2nd visit to Shore Cottage was as enjoyable and relaxing as our first. More heavy winds at the start of the week - exactly as forecast but plenty of calm and sunshine for the remainder and water like glass when we left. This cottage is a gem and area of Scotland amazing if you can make the effort to head this far north. We will be back again!

A little bit of paradise

As we turned the corner of the road and spotted the cottage across The Kyle of Durness, we all let out a gasp of amazement. From that moment on, it did not let us down. Spotlessly clean and had everything you would need and more. We watched the otters play in the evening and were blessed with a night of watching the Northern Lights dance. The ever-changing view from the window was just exceptional and morning coffee while watching it was my favourite part of the day. Durness has loads to offer and the beaches are incredible. We would highly recommend Shore Cottage and both Gillie and Lin were helpful and friendly. We cannot wait to return.

Shore Cottage is perfect and is in a stunning location, this is why we returned. The biggest compliment I could give Gillie, is that we would love to own Shore Cottage ourselves.

Shore Cottage

The cottage overlooks the ever changing environment of the Kyle of Durness, an area we had not visited before. The cottage was very comfortable and suited our requirements for a holiday home. We liked its location and spent quite some time walking on local beaches as well as in the vicinity of the cottage. We had some good wildlife encounters including otter, golden eagle and several other bird species. We met our host Gillie several times and found her local knowledge very interesting. We would hope to return.

Fantastic Location

This was our third visit to Shore Cottage. It has an unbeatable location, with great views out of the massive windows directly south over the Kyle of Durness, and the mountains beyond. We had viewings of an otter, great skuas, arctic skuas, and much more besides. Highly recommended!

Autumn Stay

Fantastic cottage in superb location. Despite visiting in the worst of weather, the cottage was very cosy - actually had to turn the underfloor heating down. Ideal base for touring the northern highlands, walking locally from the cottage or just lounging back and enjoying the view.

Outstanding Location & Cottage

The Cottage was excellent in every way, and the views were magnificent. It is well equipped and is close to all the major attractions. You have fishing, coastal walks and access to Cape Wrath within walking distance, to mention just a few. Gillie & Marta are quick to respond to any questions you might ask. I would also recommend visiting the Meet & Eat Cafe at Balnakeil Craft Village, and Balnkeil Beach is amazing. We will definitely be returning.

Serenity

Lots of pleasant walks around, the tidal movements of the loch are very appeasing …quietness… I recommend the visit of Lotte Glob ceramics, another sort of paradise, the walk to balnakeil beach, and and beautiful surprise if you go up the dune…and we met friendly people, Scottish and Polish and other ones…

Unfortunately the property we had booked had an issue with the heating and it was not possible to stay there. The owner immediately made another property available for us which was actually an upgrade as it was a much bigger property. We had an amazing stay thanks to the owner.

Amazing .....our new no 1 scottish stay

Words are hard to describe our experience here ...it was the second leg of our 36 yr anniversary and my 60th birthday celebrations..we only wish we had booked here for both weeks rather than one..comfortable place amazing views ... the window spans almost the front of the cottage the side windows also amazing views ...sitting watching the tides change the sand banks materialise... the ocean coming in was just perfect ...and the sky at night was the clearest id seen since i was a child.... big huge sparkling sky full of stars we had contact with the owner who was so very nice and helpful... and lyn and bob the caretakers couldn't do enough no questions too much trouble .....we are already looking to stay again ... the area is stunning and something for everyone who likes the scottish experience ... ..

lovely location - great host

We frequently stay at Shore Cottage because we love the location. The new owner Gillie is friendly and massively knowledgeable on the area and introduced us to even more things... thankyou. The property is now need of a little spruce up and Gillie has plans to do this along with her new housekeeper. We look forward to seeing the improvements when we return. Definitely recommend Shore Cottage and will be able to highly recommend when a couple of the things that have worn out / decorated/ need replacing are complete. Thank you for yet another great stay.

My husband David and I have been coming up to Durness for over 44 years so know the area pretty well. David's great grandfather came up here at the turn of the century to help break in the ground for sheep farming.
Balnakiel Farm was one of the original family farms. It has now been split into two and David now runs Rhigolter Farm. We live in Essex as he works as a Hand Surgeon in Southend.
Our two children have been coming up here each year and now bring our grandchildren who love it up here.

Why they chose this property

This cottage was a tumbledown shed for years on the roadside. Our friends Bernard and Irene Hendy bought the Cape Wrath Hotel in 2006. It was with great excitement we watched as they converted the Lodge into a magnificent house and Shore Cottage was rebuilt into this wonderful little oasis it is today. We are delighted to become the new owners.

What makes this property unique

As Shore and Kyleview Cottages come under the umbrella of Cape Wrath Lodge there is a resident housekeeper who lives in the Annexe flat at the rear of the Lodge. Her name is Marta and can easily be contacted with any problems or requests. Being so close to the shoreline otters can be seen playing in the evenings out of the huge windows. The ever changing tide constantly brings magnificent views and birdlife.
