Town: Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The Cragg

A lovely few days in a very interesting, quaint property. Uneven floors and gaps in the panelling in some rooms but none of this caused any issues. We did have a problem with a blocked filter on the washing machine which we had to clear, it was an item of clothing blocking it and we also had to clean the jets in the dishwasher as it was not cleaning at all The aga was not easy to use. We have not used one before so took a while to work it out. We had a power cut due to storm darragh so had to use the log fire and find some torches but it was quite atmospheric and didn’t cause too many problems. All in all a very enjoyable stay.

Fantastic!

Cragg Farmhouse is lovely, roomy & very well-supplied: also, full of quirky charm and history. Fabulous grounds & perfect location. We and the dogs absolutely loved it. We'll definitely return.

Great place for

We stayed here with two families with kids and loved this place, as it was full of character and original details. The location was perfect as it gave us the opportunity to discover the west side of Windere and Hawkshead is a treat! L

A quirky old property with many nice features

We stayed in one of the wetter weeks inJuly/August, but the cottage served us well and is very well situated for the Windermere and Coniston areas. Due to its age and listed features there are some quirks - creaky floors, clacks in the internal walls, but overll the large kitchen/dinner with a stone floor and Aga was the main place we spent time. Everything worked and although there were a few items missing we had no problem settling in and the wi-fi (after an intitla glitch) was good. Plenty of books on the local area made for good reading and the TV was there for a back-up. All-in-all a very pleasent stay.
