About this property

Walking distance to Aubeterre - Gorgeous Country Manor for families, heated pool

Manoir de La Sauzade is a beautiful, classic, French country house, built in the 18th century, within walking distance of the historic village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. Intended as a home-away-from-home rather than just a holiday let, every detail has been chosen with care. The main house together with the cottage sleeps 19 and is ideal for inter-generational family gatherings, holidays, reunions, corporate retreats.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The ground floor consists of an entrance hall with curving staircase, a large dining kitchen and a separate family sitting room lead off to the left, and a formal dining room and sitting room to the right. Behind the dining room and formal sitting room is a downstairs bedroom with a stone fireplace, and its own bathroom. (Bedrooms are described below, two (twin and double) are located in a separate cottage with its own small kitchen and living space.)

One superking bedroom together with a bathroom is located on the ground floor, and the sweeping staircase leads up to the other bedrooms in the main house, which look over the front lawn and swimming pool.

The house is furnished with antique furniture. It has a TV, Playstation 4 and DVD player. There are many books as well as games and DVDs, a children's toy cupboard, table tennis, and some outdoor games.

There is a covered terrace to the side of the house for relaxing, drinks, dining, as well as a further covered eating area on the main lawn with a barbecue.

The swimming pool is heated and separated by a wall and safety gate from the main garden. It is surrounded by a travertine terrace and is equipped with loungers, deck chairs and a table and chairs for reading, or doing the crossword!

Dove Cottage opens onto the back courtyard of the house, and comprises a living area, with cooking facilities, a bathroom, additional toilet, a twin-bedded room and a small double room. It has it own small terrace for breakfasts, or a quiet read.

The kitchen has an electric oven with a gas hob and a very large circular table, for family dining. Attached is a separate scullery with fridges and a washing machine. There is an outside rotary drying line in the garden, as well as racks in the covered barn area at the back of the house.

There are two sitting rooms, one adjacent to the kitchen for family gatherings and the other, more formal room, adjacent to the formal dining room. There is a Hi Fi in the formal sitting room, a selection of CDs, and also a large collection of books in the cupboards.

The picturesque village of Aubeterre is a 600 metre walk away, with its restaurants, wine bars, shops and market. There is also a river beach and canoeing at Aubeterre, as well as tennis courts.

If you are a very large group, we would be happy to help you accommodate more family and friends at our second property, just 10 minutes drive from Manoir de La Sauzade, close to the village of Juignac. A converted barn, with a beautiful swimming pool (12m x 6m) that sleeps seven. It is called Les Etables at Sarniquet, which was originally a walnut and flour mill. You can view this on VRBO- property number: HAUK 8253168. Stays of a shorter duration can also be booked at Les Etables.

Beautiful house

It was very hard to get in touch via abritel/vrbo, the site does not work, my phone number was not shown, etc. but Pamela spent considerable effort to make it work. The house is huge, the British sealing and toilets have some quirks, but the swimming pool is fantastic. Many many things to see around (troglodyte church, caves, markets, lots of beautiful villages…). Do take your mosquito protection with you though, there are quite a few. The house does stay very cool even in the hot summer. I’ll finish and say abritel/vrbo is a horrible website, even now the web page to type the review is half broken… (nothing to do with the house but it seems there is no other place to mention this)

Past reviews have been very accurate in their wording and really I have nothing further to add to the many comments praising the property ; having enjoyed a great family holiday there, it is just a pity that with being no longer available, the likelihood of us being able to return is remote.

Great holiday

We were a family of 10 adults and five children under 6, and had waited two years to come here, but it was definitely worth the wait. Tracy, the house manager, who greeted us at the property, was extremely helpful, and any minor queries or requests were dealt with efficiently and effectively. This handsome Maison Ancienne, full of French character with its thick stone walls and large high ceilinged rooms, afforded us a lovely cool interior on very hot days, which was extremely welcome. When inside, we virtually lived in the kitchen and the sitting room next to the kitchen, as that was our usual holiday modus operandi, and although there were two other drawing rooms we could have called upon, it worked perfectly. Loads of utensils, cooking equipment, and oven/fridge/storage space enabled all our various culinary skills to come to the fore, without us having to compromise. We loved the comfy beds and the linen sheets, and the multiple bathroom facilities ensured everybody was catered for. The BBQ worked fine, although we felt a bit more could have been made of the dining out area. Needless to say, the pool was a huge hit with everyone; a perfect temperature, and as the two elder children actually learned to swim whilst there, it is guaranteed that La Sauvade and the delightful village of Aubeterre su Dronne, will stay in our memories for a long time to come. Thank you.

Fantastic house , owner and host !

We hired the house for a three generation family holiday with ages ranged from 11-80. The house and the area had something for everyone. Justin was incredibly responsive before we went hand Tracy was amazingly helpful , helping us sort the 80th birthday cake , lifts from Bordeaux airport and local recommendations. The house was cool in the extreme heat we had …. The pool was adored by all. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped, the local wildlife plentiful ( my favourite was the woodpecker outside the balcony / veranda ) the local village is stunning. Great value for money for our family - highly recommend this house ( not sure if ideal for very young children but otherwise perfect !)

The property was fantastic. We stayed there as 9 adults and 4 children. Outdoor spaces, inc pool, were great. Very detailed and useful guide was provided to us for the house itself, as well as the surrounding areas. The village of Aubeterre nearby is beautiful. Would highly recommend a stay here

Amazing house

We booked the house for us to stay in whilst attending a wedding close by. It was ideal for our family group, very french and easy going. Lots of space for big groups both inside and out. Great kitchen area, fab pool and a good temperature. We would love to go again when we have more time to explore the lovely towns and countryside close by.

Why they chose this property

The rolling countryside of the Charente with its fields of sunflowers and romanesque villages, is quiet and peaceful, close to nature, although within a short drive from Cognac in one direction, and the wine region of St Emilion in another. The beautiful UNESCO world heritage town of Bordeaux is a perfect day trip (90 minute drive), or stopover on arrival or departure with its markets, river walks, squares, shops and restaurants - not forgetting the Bassins des Lumieres digital art centre, in the old wartime submarine basin, which hosts spectacular immersive art exhibitions.

Angouleme is closer - just 40 minutes drive, and is host to the Musee de la Bande Dessinee, as well a paper museum, rampart and river walks. Don´t forget to look out for its many cartoons and trompe l'oeil painted on buildings as you explore the streets and squares around the Hotel de Ville.

What makes this property unique

A stay at La Sauzade is like going back in time but with all mod cons. Its large, light airy rooms downstairs are interconnecting, like in Jane Austen or a Vermeer painting, and the bedrooms upstairs are of a luxurious size, unknown in a modern house. It is a very special house.
