Other Things to Note:
The site dates back to the early 1800’s when Cowan Bridge School / The Clergy Daughters’ School relocated to the site more recently known as Casterton School. The building became accommodation for the pupils of Casterton School prior to a recent merger with Sedbergh School.
In 1824, Charlotte Brontë and her sisters attended Cowan Bridge School, known as The Clergy Daughters' School.
In 1832, the school relocated to Casterton which offered a larger Estate.
In 1921, this school merged with the neighbouring Low Wood School, becoming known as Casterton Independent Boarding School. The old Low Wood School was renamed Brontë House in commemoration.
In the book Jane Eyre of 1847, Charlotte Brontë depicts her own time at Cowan Bridge by naming it Low wood. As mentioned, the Casterton School was formed in 1921 and the old Low Wood School was renamed Brontë House to commemorate the Brontë Sisters.
