About this property

Stunning lodge in idyllic setting, near Cambridge, Ely, St Ives & Saffron Walden

Unwind completely in this detached private lodge, overlooking a large natural pond, abundant with wildlife. Breathe the fresh air. Listen to the birds. Relax.

Within 10 minutes walk there are excellent food shops and award-winning cafes and restaurants. All this just 8 miles from historic Cambridge.

The lodge has a light and spacious living room overlooking the orchard and pond. It’s a fantastic place to relax and read, listen to music and just enjoy watching the wildlife. The pond attracts dragonflies and damselflies, finches, tits and many other small birds, and even a visiting kingfisher. It’s a wildlife haven, including newts and toads, woodpeckers, owls, and you may even see the occasional badger.

There’s a desk and chair for home working, and we have super fast wifi. There’s also an excellent variety of books, magazines and games to keep you entertained.
The kitchen is fully equipped with quality appliances and plenty of crockery. It’s a great place to cook, we have several nearby delicatessens and food stores and the lodge even has its own herb garden. There’s a BBQ and outdoor furniture for al fresco meals.

The bedroom is very comfortable and cosy, and beautifully lit. We supply hypoallergenic bedding and Egyptian cotton bed linen. You are virtually guaranteed a good nights sleep.

The en-suite shower room has a rain drench shower head and hand held attachment. It’s well stocked with quality toiletries and plenty of fluffy towels.

There's a small double sofa bed (really only comfortable for one person) in the living room, so three people can be accommodated if required.

During colder months the lodge is toasty warm with underfloor heating and constant hot water. There are plenty of warm, cosy blankets to make lounging around super snuggly.

The building is extremely well ventilated, with velux roof lights and windows to all aspects. Huge picture windows bring in lots of light and wonderful views at any time of year.

The lodge is situated in an old orchard with a large natural pond, with its own private garden. There's a stone patio with comfortable chairs and a separate lawned private garden with BBQ, table and chairs.

Guests are also welcome to walk through our gardens where we have some lovely sculptures and nice places to sit and relax. The meadow leads to a public footpath network with some wonderful walks around the village and beyond. There are some lovely longer walks along a brook and across open countryside to great pubs and restaurants.

In separate meadows we keep Coloured Ryeland sheep, one of England’s oldest breeds, dating back more than seven centuries. They are very cute and very friendly. In the spring and summer months we keep Gloucester Old Spot pigs. They’re very funny to watch, a great source of entertainment. We also keep rare breed chickens and there are hives with honey bees in a quiet corner of the meadow. Our guests are free to wander round and enjoy the animals, we just ask that you close any gates behind you.

If you’re in the gardens or meadow you will probably meet our flat coated retriever, Wilma. She’s very friendly and enthusiastic! And we love to meet our guests, so if you find us working or just chilling outside, please so do come and say hello.

Stunning space in a beautiful location

Stunning space in a beautiful location. Quiet relaxing and calming. Lovely touches including automatic night lights, Christmas decorated tree outside (definitely going to steal this idea), very generous welcome pack. Fabulous shower and comfy bed. Lovely walks on the doorstep and a great local cafe for brunch. We could keep going with the positives! Alistair and Julie were very attentive and lovely hosts. Highly recommended.

Wonderful stay at Rosemead!

Each time we stay at Rosemead is like arriving home, Julie & Alistair are so welcoming and are amazing hosts! The lodge is beautifully designed and perfectly set up for guest stays in the most idyllic spot in the garden, with so many special touches included like wine, homemade jam, fresh milk, bread and freshly laid eggs from their hens! We have stayed at Rosemead on a few occasions now and will continue to visit, it truly is special! Thank you so much Julie & Alistair! 😊

Idyllic hideaway in a truly beautiful setting

Our recent stay at Rosemead Lodge was just perfect. An idyllic oasis, hidden away amongst the Cambridgeshire countryside, just a few minutes’ walk from the delightful village of Bourn. The Lodge is situated in the grounds of the owner’s home, in an extremely picturesque setting. While there, we had ample opportunity to see the varied wildlife and witnessed a constant stream of garden and woodland birds close-up. Robins, wrens, finches, magpies, woodpeckers and even a couple of owls! The modern interior design of the lodge made our visit very comfortable, and it was fully equipped with everything we needed during our stay. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful with tips on places to go and see, as well as recommendations for dining out. We will definitely be back…

About the host

Host profile image
As an interior designer, I'm impressed by both beauty and functionality. I love theatre, cinema, concerts and galleries, great restaurants and bars. I relish being a host as it seems to put these varied interests to a good purpose. There's a great joy in sharing local tips, knowing that guests will return home feeling relaxed but inspired. I'm happiest outdoors; I keep rare breed sheep, pigs and chickens, and two gorgeous dogs. Wild swimming, sailing, hiking and cycling keep me happy and healthy.

Why they chose this property

My husband Alistair and I moved from Chiswick to Cambridgeshire when our girls were very young, in search of fresh air and open space for them to explore. We fell in love with the peace and quiet, and the big skies and surrounding farmland which we're so lucky to enjoy. We love the proximity of the rivers Cam and Ouse, and their surrounding wetlands. There are so many places to enjoy messing around on the water - paddleboarding, kayaking, and even swimming. But we enjoy the fact that we're very close to historic cities Cambridge and Ely. We love the magnicient architecture, the abundance of cultural activities on offer, and the buzz of bars, pubs, theatres and restaurants.

What makes this property unique

The lodge was originally built as a design studio, so its vaulted living space is flooded with light. The interior is unashamedly modern, while the exterior is designed to look like a typical Cambridgeshire barn. The outlook is beautiful; the pond is teeming with wildlife and watching the procession of birds, dragonflies and newts that visit the water and surrounding trees can be quite addictive. The village of Bourn is very pretty, with several fantastic restaurants, pubs and delis within easy walking/cycling distance.
