About this property

Mas Julian Provence

Idyllic Setting near Fontvieille / St Remy for up to 15 people

This traditional 18th-century farmhouse was transformed and renovated into a charming Bastide (manor house) in the 1960s. It enjoys an exceptional location to the south of the Alpilles, offering a unique character with its approach through olive fields and a sunny, south-facing orientation that ensures natural light throughout the day while remaining sheltered during the Mistral winds.

The main residence, measuring approximately 227 m², comprises three reception rooms: an entrance living room with an impressive original fireplace and access to both the elevator and staircase; a large living room featuring a fireplace, high ceilings, exposed beams, and French doors; and a smaller living room/study that enjoys sunlight from morning until afternoon through expansive glass doors. A dining room accommodating up to 14 guests opens onto a magnificent south-facing terrace approximately 25 metres long. The ground floor also includes a kitchen, a scullery, and a separate WC.

On the first floor: a hallway leads to bedroom one with an en-suite bathroom; bedroom two, also with an en-suite; a master bedroom with a private covered terrace facing south-east; and a fourth bedroom, which has been converted into an independent apartment with its own entrance, terrace access, and bathroom. All bedrooms are air-conditioned.

The property spans over 6,300 m² and features a beautifully landscaped garden adorned with rose bushes, 17 olive trees, cypresses, and plane trees. The garden is divided into four distinct areas: the house garden, olive groves, swimming pool area, and ‘Mazet’ garden. A watering system is in place, drawing water from the nearby canal.

Crossing a small bridge over the canal, you will find a 12 x 6 metre swimming pool with a terrace and automatic roller shutter. The pool area enjoys sunshine throughout the day.

Annexes:

Caretaker’s House: A 60 m² independent dwelling connected to the main house by a covered passage. It includes a small living room with high ceilings, a hallway, two bedrooms (one with an en-suite), an independent bathroom, and a kitchen with access to a breakfast terrace.

Studio: Recently renovated, the 16 m² studio features a living area with a view of a rose and olive garden, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a sunny morning terrace. It is slightly separated from the main grounds by a garden staircase, providing privacy and tranquility.

Location:

Situated near the Alpilles Natural Park and just 25 minutes from the renowned city of Avignon, the property is ideally positioned for exploring picturesque villages and enjoying an exceptional natural heritage. Notable attractions include the citadel of Les Baux de Provence, the world-famous restaurant La Baumanière, and the Carrières de Lumières, just a five-minute drive away.

This idyllic location is cherished by UK and US expatriates seeking a temperate climate, a vibrant cultural scene, and a high quality of life. The property is a mere five-minute drive from the lively village of Fontvieille, which offers restaurants, cafés, a cinema, bakeries, a weekly market, and a variety of shops. Prestigious villages such as Paradou and Maussane-les-Alpilles are only 10 minutes away, while the city of Arles, with its meteoric rise in the arts scene thanks to the LUMA Foundation and Frank Gehry’s Luma Tower, is a 15-minute drive. Fancy Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is also just 15 minutes away, with Avignon TGV 25 minutes and Marseille Airport reachable in 50 minutes. Close to the Camargue, great beaches and beach clubs (M Plages at Marines les Plages)

This rare and exceptional property offers a unique blend of character, elegance, and modern living in a highly sought-after location.

Wonderful for family holidays, remote work in beautiful surroundings, family get togethers to celebrate a special occasion, also possible to spend long weekends in smaller house (catering five people). Works very well to use as home office and teleworking, internet strong enough to allow four PCs at same time and watch TV in separate room.

Lovely stay

Mas Julian is an extraordinary place. Tucked away in a beautifully landscaped garden and set among olive orchards at the foot of the Alpilles, the villa is both elegant and comfortable. The location is ideal - a few kilometers by quiet roads to Fontvielle, 20 mins to Arles and its Roman amphitheater, and not much further to Nimes, Pont du Gard, and St. Remy. The property abuts the Parc National des Alpilles with trails that run into the hills as far as Les-Baux-de-Provence and beyond. Wolfgang is a generous and thoughtful host. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Great stay in Fontvielle

Really enjoyed our time here. Was difficult to find at first (instructions on the VRBO check-in email could be much clearer - or otherwise someone should have proactively reached out to us to explain how to get there - though we eventually figured it out after getting in touch with Wolfgang directly), but other than that we were very happy with the property. Lots of space, homely Provencal feel, great outdoor space, great pool, and great location. Very happy with our stay overall. Thank you!

The time of our life....

We arranged this holiday, for a broad group of friends and family, to share in a milestone birthday and a milestone wedding anniversary. As a backdrop to these events, Mas Julian was perfect, but it was so much more than that. The rooms were spacious and the ensuites were fantastic, the living areas were luxurious (although we spent most of our time outside), the pool was amazing and the gardens extensive and mature. The location was ideal, being rural and yet close to amenities. Our family and friends haven't stopped talking about our stay and are unlikely too any time soon.

Old country french splendor on beautiful property

The house is very comfortable for a group. The drive up is impressive and the grounds were suffering from a drought, but lovely. We used 5 of the rooms. The owner left a very nice welcome list with restaurant recommendations in the surrounding area. We cooked some meals, shopped for food nearby in Tarascon. We had lovely evenings on the patio. Each bedroom had functioning AC units. The pool was lovely, although cold this time of year. If I have one complaint it is that the house was completely shut up, exterior shutters included, when we arrived and it had not been cleaned properly. I believe it is because their regular cleaner was out. The beds and sheets were clean and ready for us, but the floors had not been cleaned. Each guest gets one bath towel and one hand towel, no washcloth. There are beach towels for the pool. 3 of the 5 bedrooms we used had no showers, only baths. There is a washer and dryer available as need be, but we were not told that the dryer needs to be emptied of accumulated water, because it does not vent outside. We figured it out when the dryer stopped drying. One of two ovens was operational. The microwave did not work. When we arrived, the screen for the stove hood had fallen down and it was missing one screw so that we could not fix it. These are small complaints in the larger picture, but worth noting. The house has a relaxed elegance that is lovely. If it had been opened up and cleaned and ready for us I would have no complaints.

A family gathering in Provence

There were eight of house, six adults and three teens. We had a great time together. Highlights included eating our meals on the terrace, swimming in the pool and lounging in the outdoor sitting area. Some of us played ping pong. We made many day trips to other towns in the area. A wonderful week together.

beautiful historic house in central Provence

The location is in the heart of Provence, the property is well-maintained and the room breakdown was perfect for our family gathering. We had 4 generations of family meet here in mid-June and we loved every moment of it. The beds were comfortable, the air-conditioning worked beautifully and the setting was stunningly picturesque. The kitchen was well equipped, the bikes worked great and everybody loved the pool - especially the toddlers. From Fontvielle it's a 1 hour drive to Avignon, L'isle sur la sorgue, the salt flats of Carmague and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Saint Remy and Baux-de-Provence are even closer and very charming. Wolfgang was responsive from beginning to end. We loved our stay and will treasure the memory.

A trip of a lifetime!

Our family & friends trip was a belated big celebration for my husband. Wolfgang & Dominique's beautiful property did not disappoint for a long 15 day stay. The large main Mas was done in charming French country decor. The kitchen was well stocked with all utensils, dishes, a BBQ grill and all appliances to make meals at home. We shopped for food at the local grocery stores but best of all-at fun local farmers markets. We were happy to have 2 dishwashers & washer/dryer. A big dining room held all of us even when our guest amount was over 10. We ate out on the patio when the weather was good. We rented all 3 structures & could accommodated more guests, but this enabled friends to have some privacy. The house was very far back on a gravel road so a car was an absolute must. There was a trail behind the house we enjoyed exploring. We drove to so many great local sites- Arles, Le Beaux, Tarascon, Aix in Provence, St. Remy, Fontvieille for sightseeing, shopping and delicious dining. A pool, a creek, an even old well gave the grounds a country feeling-so different from anything we have experienced from a city vacation. We live in Los Angeles, so a 1700's French farmhouse was a very unique experience. If we had questions or glitches, Wolfgang was quick to respond. Bridgette, the housekeeper took care of it. We highly recommend Mas Julian for a big group of friends & family. It was truly a trip of a lifetime! Merci beaucoup!

Incredible House and Grounds

My family of 5 and another family of 4 stayed here for 6 nights from June 10-16. The house itself is truly incredible. It felt like you were on a French estate and had total seclusion and privacy. The property is perhaps a half mile or less off the main road, and it is a little confusing to find it the first time you try. However, after we found the property it was easy to get there again. The house is beautiful, with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms on the top floor. Of the 4 bathrooms, only one had a shower. The rest of the bathrooms had a bathtub. The main bedroom had a private terrace which was really nice to enjoy time in the mornings with a cup of coffee. There is a private guest house, with a living room, kitchenette, and two bedrooms and two bathrooms. A ping pong table outside and multiple sitting areas. The landscaping is breathtaking. From the house, you can walk down some steps and there is a really neat area that has a pond and a little creek that runs through the property, and then some steps down to the pool area. The pool was fantastic. Perfect temperature and very clean. Our kids spent a ton of time in the pool. If you like/need to exercise, it is tough to do. The main road leading to the property has no shoulder, and trucks and cars go speeding by pretty fast. You can run around the gravel roads just outside the property grounds, but you end up just doing a bunch of laps. Behind the property, there is some sort of national park or something that has long gravel roads that go through large hills past rock formations and lots of vegetation. This is where you want to go to run. Very beautiful. The Wi-Fi was not very good. There are two separate routers, one in the kitchen and one in the main sitting room. If you went out onto the porch you would not have very good signal. I would suggest the owner install a Wi-Fi mesh system or something to help with this. You absolutely, positively, need a car. The property is a solid 20 minute walk Fontvieille, the nearest town, and this is down the same sketchy road. A car is a must. All in all, it is an incredible place to have a vacation. Beautiful grounds and secluded and quiet.

Wonderful house in perfect location

This is a stunning property will a great outdoor terrace for eating and drinks. The bedrooms are spacious and comfortable and the house feels like a family home. The pool ( good size) is located in a beautiful garden which has some magnificent tress that are beautifully lit in the evening. This is a great location for exploring les Alpilles and there are great shops and restaurants close by. We will return!

Fantastique!

What a gem of a property! We were three families with five children total. The property fit us all very comfortably in the main and guest house., which is beautifully decorated. We bought delicious treats from the adjacent town, Maussane about ten minutes away, and ate at the lovely outdoor tables most nights. The kids did not want to leave the large pool which was equipped with a variety of floats - turtle, swans and other. If they did leave it was to jump on the adjacent trampoline. We ate figs from the surrounding trees. It was heaven. For those those children allow them to leave, the property is close to many tourist sites including Baux, Arles, and Avignon. Thank you. We had an amazing time. We will be back soon we hope.

Peaceful, private, lovely villa

Just returned from a week in this amazing villa. Wolfgang and Dominique were amazing hosts from the day we booked until the day we left, helping with everything from directions to restaurants to routes for running, greeting us with gracious hospitality when we arrived the first day. The house is spacious and every pretty, uniquely decorated bedroom has it's own lovely bathroom. The fact that the bedrooms are air conditioned was a great bonus during an unusually hot week. The kitchen is more than well equipped with everything one could need if one is so inclined to cook while on holiday! The living spaces are comfortable and inviting and quiet when you need to have some indoor time. The grounds are so private and extensive that it made it challenging to leave and explore Provence each day. Our family of five spent hours in the pool, sitting on the huge patio and exploring all of the corners of the property. The presence of a little stream provided endless entertainment and was a wonderful bonus! The children, ages 8, 11 and 11 loved the ping pong table, trampoline and all of the thoughtfully provided pool toys. We really could not have asked for more with this beautiful home, inside and out. Without question we would return and try to spend even more time here next time. Thank you Wolfgang and Dominique!!

About the host

Hosted by Wolfgang & Dominique Kerck

Host profile image
Continental European couple with East Coast educated boys, living in London and Philadelphia: after 25 years of dreaming of "Provence" to escape the London weather, fell in love with this magical property, close to Arles, an historic City reinvigorated by Luma Art foundation of Maya Hoffman. We know what our American and Parisian friends like, this house has it all.

Why they chose this property

Cause we love France in the summer but have found St Tropez too busy in the summer. We wanted to protect the younger generation from the vices of nightlife and associated risks, but offer them wonderful restaurants, tennis opportunities, cultural visits, such as the incredible Son et Lumiere in the chalk caverns of les Baux and chilling out at the pool. Cause we love gardens, lush vegetation and olive trees, good wine, of which there is so much around, reading, listening to music and having lots of friends out on the 30m long south facing terrace, covered by wysteria. And because off season you can eat out on the terrace almost every day. Remote work, now acceptable and a perfect place for as internet is strong.

What makes this property unique

Close to the epicentre of Provence, St Remy, but south of the Alpilles, hence warmer and sunnier, protected from the occasional Mistral winds coming from the north, you live in a secluded heaven of a mature garden, offering views towards Arles from behind the house. Countless opportunities for visits of the region, with the sea just 45 minutes away. Camargue and Arles was the attraction of painters, writers and filmstars in the past, today the worlds best photographers join in the summer to attend Arles Photo. Peaceful, calm, no close neighbours in sight, just a few other beautiful houses spread around, no tourists, caravans, just prime landscape 'dans les pieds des Alpilles' a glorious natural park. Camargue offers unrivalled bird watching, St Remy unrivalled bustling Provencal town, just 15 minutes away. Here, and in Fontvieille, you find your NY Times same day, and many shops offering top chocolate, olive oil, stylish interior and much more. Mausanne just 10 minutes away, like Paris 16eme, in the South. Best bread and cheese, run by the former maitre at Deux Magots in Paris, and close to Bistrot de Paradou. "The insider's" Brasserie, cherished by locals and the cosmopolitan set, 3 hours there on a Saturday lunch time, makes all your weekend unforgettable. If we ever leave this place, this we shall miss most!!
