About this property

Lakehome near Houghton with Outdoor Sauna!

Three bedroom lakehome 5 minutes from Michigan Technological University, on beautiful Portage Lake. All the amenities of home, including 3 queen sized beds, a pull-out couch, and a twin trundle bed for sleeping up to 10!
New appliances include a full kitchen with a dishwasher, and a laundry in the basement. The main bathroom has a tub/shower, and there is plenty of space to spread out in the living room. Cable TV and WiFi are provided.
The outdoor sauna sits a few steps from the water, and is perfect for sauna / swim activities! There is also a gazebo on the lakeshore that offers a comfortable place to sit with shelter and a great view of the lake and swimming area. The lake bottom is sand and ranges from zero to 4 feet in depth near the dock. A rock fire ring near the lake is a perfect way to spend the evening with friends by the fire, roasting marshmallows.
We have a kayak and two new bikes in the basement that you are free to use to explore the lake, or the miles long waterfront trail from MTU through Chassell. Due to the heavy rains in July of 2018, parts of the trail are closed to the north, but it is open to Chassell.
Portage Lake is a great fishing lake because it is open to Superior, with Walleye, Pike, Bass and much more. The sauna is perfect for summer use, but must be winterized in the fall, October 15th through May 1st.

Great place!

Great spot on the lake! Beautiful view. Sandy and shallow so kids can swim, yet easy for them to paddle board or kayak out. The house is nice, clean, and spacious! Large bedrooms and a well-kept kitchen. Would stay here again!

House on Portage Lake

A very comfortable place to stay. Kids enjoyed the kayak and bike. Beautiful walking trail along the lake. Well-supplied house and lovely gazebo. Great location for day-tripping the Keweenaw Peninsula and Porcupine Mountains. We would like to stay there again sometime.

This is a great place to say. Wish we had more time to enjoy the awesome lake setting.

We were up for the weekend to visit our daughter who is attending Tech. The house was great and has a nice layout. Enjoyed the sauna but loved the little boat house/gazebo. We did not have enough time to enjoy all that was offered but we did enjoy a bonfire by the lake. We would definitely stay here again.

Memorial weekend

Beautiful cabin on an equally beautiful lake. Short distance to the ORV trails. Wesley was very accommodating to our group with 4 trucks and trailers. The sauna was very nice and there was plenty of room for everybody to sleep comfortably.

A relaxing getaway or base for exploring the Keweenaw

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property! The house was spotless when we arrived. Although we were usually out and about experiencing the Keweenaw Peninsula, the house on Portage Lake was a relaxing place to return to each evening. There were 5 of us- my husband and I, my parents, and our 13yo nephew, who enjoyed fishing off the dock with his grandpa, basking in the sauna with his uncle, and kayaking. My mom and I loved the view. I don't think we turned on the TV even once the whole week. It's a great spot for an "unplugged" vacation, though the high speed WiFi works great and we had excellent cell service (Verizon). There are many places in the Keweenaw Peninsula where I was glad I'd downloaded offline maps so we could still navigate in GPS mode, but we had a strong signal at the house. Although the house has a nice "cottage-y" feel, Houghton is just 10 or so minutes away with everything you could want: Walmart, Walgreens, fast food, restaurants and coffee shops. The house includes everything you need for cooking, plus towels, sheets, and plenty of extra blankets, so all we needed to pick up was meals for the week at Walmart and bait, which many gas stations have. The room with the nautical theme is on the side of the house facing the lake. All 3 bedrooms are really nice, though. The room with the queen bed and daybed is the largest and the half-bath is in the hallway just outside it. The full bath is near the other two rooms. My husband really enjoyed taking a cool shower in the hot sauna, and our nephew would shower out there as well, so really just my parents and I used the shower in the house. It was nice having options for everyone, and no one ever had to wait. There are games and puzzles in a closet off the dining room. It would have been fun to take some out to the enclosed lakeside gazebo if we'd been around more. The gazebo has furniture to sit on and a small table. In the yard are chairs around a campfire ring. In the basement is a washer and dryer, and it was wonderful that we were allowed to use it so we didn't have to pack as much. We did just a couple mid-week loads and were good to go for the rest of the trip. The house is centrally located in the peninsula, which was nice since our daily excursions took us anywhere from Copper Harbor to the Porcupine Mountains. It wasn't much more than an hour to get anywhere we went during the week. It was a comfortable, welcoming house, and we would definitely stay there again.

Would come back in a heartbeat!

We had a wonderful time! Great location, right on the water but also close to 2 towns with stores and restaurants and anything else you might need. Home was clean and had everything we needed. The sauna was amazing, we used it nearly every day! Fires every night were the perfect ending to our days at the lake. Thank you for sharing this great place!

Peaceful lake home near Houghton, Michigan

We loved the lake front home for 9 days and would return. The sunrises, with coffee in hand, were breath taking and relaxing. We enjoyed the sauna and campfire nightly. The creek and walking trail was fun to explore with grandkids. The house was exceptionally clean and well stocked.

Awesome place!

Was up to move my son back from Hancock (MTU student). We had 5 adults and 6 on the last night after my son was moved out. There is nothing but space in this house. The rooms are great size and the beds were very comfortable. The house is very well kept and has great updates. The living room furniture was very comfortable as well. The kitchen had tons of room and was stocked with all you need. The sauna was awesome. The guys enjoyed that pretty much every night. My MTU student has become quite the sauna enthusiast and gave this one 2 thumbs up for sure! It was nice have the restroom in the sauna for the nights we had fires. We even enjoyed the lake house one evening to play cards when it was a little to cold for a fire. Loved the path on the property. I was able to make a 4 mile round trip walk to Chassell a couple of days. Wish I had something like that at my home! Needless to say it pretty much has it alL! The only drawback is the house being super close to 41 and the traffic noise. If you are from the city this may be nothing but if you live rural like I do I was sensitive to it. Would definitely stay again! Lastly, Wes is super accommodating and friendly to work with. Thank you for sharing your great place!

Great house, great views, great location!

We were very happy with our stay. The home is very comfortable, great layout, spacious and privacy for 3 bedrooms. One bedroom is so large it would easily accommodate 4 people. We loved the firepit outside near the lake where we could enjoy the incredible views of the lake. The 2nd bathroom located in the sauna would provide very convenient facilities near the action and play outside near the water's edge. You can see the adorable sauna house in the picture taken from the dining room. All the comforts of home, all the excitement of the lake and all the convenience of being near MTU and "downtown" Houghton.

The Perfect U. P. Getaway

The home is situated on a stunning piece of property overlooking Portage Lake just north of Chassell, MI. I chose the property as it was less than 5 miles south of Michigan Tech University which made it easy to visit my son. The home was very clean and spacious, much larger than I had first envisioned. As I had the unfortunate timing of being up north during Winter Storm Xanto, I contacted Wes and asked if I could rent his home for an additional day and he responded immediately. Awesome customer service!!! I can't tell you how happy I was when a truck came with a plow to move the 22" of snow that fell in less than two days. Although my son and I didn't use the sauna off the lake, we did take a peek...wow! so cool. This property really comes with unique bonuses that a hotel could not compete against. If our family is in the area again, Wes will be the first person I contact.

Spacious and comfortable

This lakefront home had everything we needed. Being so close to MTU and Houghton/Hancock activities and restaurants was a bonus! We used the sauna and walked out onto the frozen lake, we will bring snowmobiles next time. The trail right in the backyard is wonderful. Thank you for sharing your home!

Snowmobiling trip 8 people

The house was great! We were allowed to use the basement to hang wet gear. There is a trail behind the house to get to Houghton or Chassell well that wasn’t so great. It’s a nice feature to have the trail so close but it’s a non-groomed trail and it’s a good 6 mile ride north on a whoop section, and a manageable 2 miles going south. Wesley was great he made sure we would have enough room for trailers and pickups, and also made a back-up plan if we needed to.
