Lovely cottage
Lovely cottage in Greystoke. Very nice outdoor swimmingpool nearby. Not far from a lot of nice places to visit in the neighbourhood. We visited the house of Beatrix Potter, it was very special. Nice house when you travel Sith your dog.

Feriencottage in Greystoke Lake District UK

I have been to Greystoke before and I have always loved the place. But this was my first time at this property. I had to work for the first couple days during our stay. The whole experience revolved around access to hot water. I was late to work because there was no hot water. We didn’t know at that time that hot water was timed to switch off at 6:30 and if one person had a shower, then others cannot. We are a family of four and after a day of trekking, hillwalking and climbing, we did not have access to proper hot shower or hot water. Our whole experience was ruined because of that. It was extremely frustrating. We learnt from someone else that previously guests have complained against this and it has never been resolved. I can’t understand why would someone on a holiday would get up and take a bath at 6:30? Then the neighbour came and helped us by allowing us to access “The Boost”, which was no access to guests!!! Not having access to hot water at this day and age in a rental property is extremely disappointing. It’s fine for a family of 2 but when you have kids it’s frustrating. House was clean. Parking is a bit of an issue but not a problem. There is no network inside the house and the wifi password was wrong but we managed to get the right one. It’s a cozy place and beds were comfortable. Due to problems with hot water, I would not go back.

Family weekend break at Greystoke.
Foxglove cottage is ideally situated in the village, very close to the shop/post office and the excellent "Boot and Shoe" pub. The cottage was clean on arrival, maybe a little dated on the interior, but this adds to the charm. Beds were clean and comfy and the free wi- fi was a nice touch along with the freeview tv. Plenty of good walks and a lovely park and outdoor pool nearby.

Foxglove cottage which could be much better
The cottage itself is very charming and very well located with an easy access to the main road leading to Penrith or Lake District, a local pub and a small local shop. The information provided by the owner before our arrival was very helpful and made us certain with our choice. You can’t even imagine how we all felt when we learnt that the cottage wasn’t cleaned at all after previous customers( no bed linens, no towels, no toilet paper, the rubbish and dirty laundry were left in the bathroom, dirty carpets and strange odour). In current situation of COVID 19 the safety should be paramount! We tried to contact the owners using the numbers listed in the Information book of the cottage and found out that contact number to Paul didn’t work any more, the voice recording said that he sadly passed away in December. It is important to review and update the information on a regular basis to avoid misunderstandings in the future. Patricia( the main owner) managed to resolve the cleaning issue within 2 hours but we had to stay in and wait for the cleaners, not ideal situation with two hungry children, not being able to unpack or even use a toilet. The cleaning service wasn’t the best at all, two girls arrived in a rash, not wearing masks or socially distancing themselves in the current situation, the stairs to the bedrooms were not hovered at all and some hair was left inside the bath. In order to achieve 4or 5 stars I would strongly recommend to improve the cleaning service in this property for safe holiday stay.

August short break
Perfect location, great enclosed space for our dog although the grass area picture is a little deceptive- it’s smaller than it looks. Old fashioned decor but exactly what is shown on the pictures. The cottage is really well equipped- it has everything you need. Bit of a problem on arrival- previous guests had not put the keys where they should have and so couldn’t get in. Couldn’t get hold of the owner who had always been prompt in responses previously. Resolved the issue ourselves and then owner called the following day as she’d been in a no signal area, so mixed opinions on communications with owner. Other than that, all good. Recommend the boot and shoe pub in the village too for food... fabulous!

5☆ presentation - a great deal of genuine thought has gone into the cosy furnishings but see below.
Mixed enjoyment of cottage. Supplies: we were given a generous supply of necessary provisions on arrival e.g. washing up liquid. Cottage generally fresh and clean on entry. 1) Water supply was the main issue generally. There was no mixer tap in the bathroom or kitchen sinks so scalding hot water burned hands(when hot water available)/or we had to fill the basin 2) No Electric Shower or Hot Water Booster so limited hot (scalding) water or water ran cold after one shower or big dish wash 3) Bath taps <-> mixer Shower off taps - had to carefully mix hot/cold (trying not to get burned/simultaneously slip) - unlike calibrated electric showers which work with a couple of quick adjustments. Comparatively small shower head so very limited flow/ wall shower head fixing pointing directly downwards and positioned in such a way that awkward to stand under shower 4) Shower Mat Old and Cracked as highlighted 5) Shower curtain left fusty smell as damp/brown along bottom - if bath required at all, perhaps replace with shower bath i.e. curved shower door on curved bath for shower and hygiene/function i.e. doors don't cling like curtain 6) "Wild Bird Cups" were left very stained - but we left them clean. Suspect that people had difficulty cleaning due to lack of hot water "on tap" as we encountered this 7) Stairs - 3 curved and 6 straight stairs as ascending stairs One banister - Right Hand Side Ascend RHSA over 6 straight/ steep and deep stairs effectively this amounts to only half a banister as the first half is tight against wall with no finger room to enable proper grip over first half of 6 straight stairs (The 1st 3 curved steps have no banister at all) 8) In general it would be good to have had a laundry bin/rubbish bins in rooms and a dish drying rack. To be fair dish towels were supplied. May need more hand towels as towels didn't dry quickly. Kitchen very cold at night - very good heaters in lounge so could happily have spent whole visit snuggled in this pretty, warm and well - appointed room. Very good to have WiFi and rooms were good sizes, good number of light switches and a lovely garden, allowing dogs. Housekeeper local and very helpful indeed. Landlady very good at communicating e.g. when we checked about relatives staying. An aesthetically pleasing ,very functional gem of a cottage if simple modern adaptations are made. Hope this helps to make cottage 5 star! PS What about a fold down bed for those who have difficulty accessing stairs..?

Host profile image
I have been making my cottage available to visitors in the Lake District for over 20 years and know how important it is to maintain very high standards. My attention to detail ensures that you will have an enjoyable and comfortable stay in Foxglove Cottage.

Walkers, cyclists, general holidaymakers [and their dogs] are very welcome.

Why they chose this property

Foxglove Cottage is oaked beamed and oozes character and charm. It was built in 1753 and the names of the original owners are carved in stone over the front door. It is meticulously maintained by a local gardener and cleaning agency.

The cottage is in an ideal location, being easily accessible to fells and Lakes [for great walks and amazing views], local towns and tourist centres.

In summer, the village has an outdoor, heated swimming pool [in Church Road].

An ideal stop for cyclists on the National Route 71.

There is a car port and a lockable garage. The garden is secure for dogs.

Nearby there are great local pubs which serve excellent food. One of them is just a few minutes walk away.
Caring dog owners are welcome.

What makes this property unique

If you're looking for something special, something different, you will find it at Foxglove Cottage. It was built in 1753 and the names of the original owners are carved in stone over the front door. The walls of the cottage are very thick [warm in winter and cool in summer].

In summer you can enjoy a cool drink in the private garden, or on the patio, and in winter you can enjoy the magic of an open log fire in the warmth of the oak-beamed cottage.
