Take time out to visit Floors Castle, a very prominent Stately Home with restaurants and gardens, designed by William Adam. Also close by are Mellerstain House, Kelso Abbey and the Kelso races. Mellerstain House is a stunning example of Georgian architecture at its finest. Designed by the architect William Adam and his son Robert in 1725, it is the residence of the 13th Earl of Haddington. The house is located within 80 acres of luscious rolling parkland and is in walking distance of Smailholm Tower, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott. Great fishing can be enjoyed on the Teviot, Tweed and Jed rivers and there are many excellent golf courses to choose from. Watch the spectacular and historic Common Ridings, held at Kelso, Hawick, Selkirk, Langholm, Lauder and others, with long histories. The Borders also offer some superb walking and cycling, be it on the coast, over the breathtaking hillsides or amongst the enchanting Border forests. The towns of Coldstream, Jedburgh, Kirk Yetholm and Wooler are just a short drive away and are a joy to explore at leisure.
