Casco Antiguo- El Barrio
One of the most charming routes in the city of Alicante is undoubtedly the one that runs through the Old Town, which constitutes the historical and cultural center of the city, as well as the main focus of the night outings of Alicante and foreigners, who know this area as El Barrio.
During the day, you can enjoy the Historic Center in a very dynamic way, focusing on its facades and old buildings, visiting its primordial monuments such as the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás or the Basilica de Santa María, discovering its narrow streets or main streets (such as Calle Mayor or Calle Labradores) and strolling through its original neighbourhoods.
The Central Market of Alicante is a building in an eclectic style, with ornaments of Valencian modernism, from the beginning of the 20th century, which serves as a municipal market. Located on Avenida de Alfonso el Sabio 10, it was designed by the architect Francisco Fajardo Guardiola in 1915 and completed by Juan Vidal Ramos in 1922. It has 292 stalls distributed over an area of 11,100 square meters spread over two floors. The building has a basically rectangular plan. The most emblematic façade is the one on Alfonso el Sabio Avenue, with access through a large staircase. The rear façade faces the Plaza 25 de Mayo. The building consists of a semi-basement floor and an upper floor where the sales stalls are located.
The Benalúa market is located on Calle Perez Medina number 2 in Alicante. It was inaugurated in 1947 with a sales area of 470 m2. It has 43 stalls.
