Welcome to The Basket Loft, a cottage beautifully renovated to a high standard in the village of Newlyn, West Cornwall. This cottage oozes history with exposed beams and granite walls and the owners have kept the marine theme with antique brass portholes reclaimed from vintage sailing ships, as well as a silver lamp rescued from an ocean liner. The property was named because crab baskets were woven here one hundred years ago to support the famous Newlyn crab and fishing industry.
The property is spread over two floors; the living area is on the first floor making the most of the stunning views of the harbour. This cosy room has a feature granite wall leading to a bay window with access to the private balcony. There is a new modern well-equipped kitchen which has everything you would require if you don’t want to eat out all the time. Sit here for morning coffee or an evening drink and watch the world go by - the night skies here are outstanding. Downstairs on the ground floor is a large bedroom with en-suite facilities; upstairs is a second large bedroom and an amazing bathroom with a freestanding bath.
Newlyn is a small fishing village and seaside town in southwest Cornwall, it lies on the shore of Mounts Bay and is home to the Scillonian Ferry. Famous for Newlyn School of Art, it attracts photographers and artists all year round. It is obviously fantastic for fresh fish and seafood; a short walk will take you to cafés and restaurants offering the latest catch. If you want to cook, there are several fishmongers along the harbour to choose from, as well local shops selling farm produce and home cooked bread and pasties.
Newlyn has a small beach past the fish market and quays, the best beach would be Marazion, just under four miles away. This is home to St Michaels Mount, an impressive site and at low tide you can walk across the causeway to the Mount, explore the gardens and enjoy refreshment at the café. It is well worth a trip to this ancient town, not only for it glorious turquoise waters, safe sandy beaches, but to wander around and look at the local galleries and independent shops. If you enjoy walking, then follow one of the beautiful coastal paths or catch the bus to Mousehole and then walk back. Public transport is the best way to get around as parking in high season is difficult, take the open top bus which allows you to hop on and off visit Lands’ End, St Just, St Ives and Penzance to name a few. Enjoy the rugged coastline and spectacular scenery.
For those that want to go back in time take a trip to the Isles of Scilly you can go by sea or fly, it really is a magical place. Whatever you do you, this home from home is somewhere you will want to rebook again.
