Toledo Bend Lakefront Cabin near the “Chicken Coop”, with Private Boat Launch

**Please note that effective April 1, 2019 VRBO no longer collects the 6% city tax, therefore a property fee is collected for that amount. VRBO continues to collect the state tax of 6% which is charged separately in your payment.

Located on Gibson Point peninsula at 481 Moran Crossing, Milam, Texas, just north of the Pendleton Bridge, this historic mid-century modern cabin named "Crappie House" is perfectly situated near prime bass fishing and the famous “Chicken Coop” crappie fishing areas. Set on a 2-1/2 acre property with 650 feet of lake frontage, the 2-Bedroom 1-bath cabin sleeps 6 (4 adults max) and boasts a "million-dollar view" from the spacious deck that opens to the dining area and great room. Accommodations include a bedroom with a queen bed and a second bedroom with a queen bed and twin bunk beds. Amenities include a charcoal grill, a 52" TV with internet service, free wifi, and a well-appointed kitchen with full-size range, refrigerator-freezer with ice maker, microwave, dishwasher, and toaster oven. The bathroom has a shower stall, toilet, and single sink. There is a washer and dryer. Linens are furnished for kitchen, bed and bath. Added bonuses are the semi-private boat launch on an adjacent cove, a large fire pit with wood, a tree swing, a screened dock house with eating and conversation areas, and a fish-cleaning station on a fishing dock. Crappie House is perfect for serious fishermen, families, and couples looking for a quiet, fairly secluded get-away. Nearby there is a small market and grill that sells fishing supplies, licenses and gasoline. (Louisiana and Texas licenses are accepted on all of Toledo Bend). The town of Hemphill, Texas is a 20-minute car ride away, and has a grocery store, restaurants, ATMs and various shops. Likewise, there are the same offerings across the Pendleton Bridge in Louisiana, about 25 minutes away.
Due to HOA rules, boats must be trailered when not in use and no fireworks are permitted.

Quiet getaway

The place was clean, right on the water with a dock house out on the water which was fun to fish from. Perfect for a little getaway where we got much needed R&R. The master bed was a little uncomfortable, but the size was good for the two of us. Didn’t get to hike the National Forest because they were closed, so be sure to note this if it was on your agenda. All in all a great trip.

Just what the doctor ordered!

Wonderful place to stay and visit with the kids and grand-babies in my last week recovering from medical leave. The morning sunrises were breathtaking with abundant birdsong. Capable internet. We were welcomed by a migrating flock of pelicans. Property was cozy, and will be going back soon!

Wonderful experience!!!

This was my first short-term rental and I'm afraid it can only be down hill from here. The property is beautiful. It has been lovingly preserved and updated. It really did feel like coming home (on vacation). Everything went smoothly.

Awesome property

The property is nice a spacious, house is comfortable with most amenities. Water was low but you can’t argue with Mother Nature. Caught catfish, drum, perch and bass. This is not the first trip here and will not be the last.

Peace & Quiet, Margaritas, and Catfish!

It took us a couple times around the dead end to find the little place tucked on the slope but we finally did and got settled in. Id recommend a front porch light with a sensor on it, or one of those lights that activate when it gets dark up by the entrance just in case slow pokes like us arrive after dark. The little place is nice and cozy and the beds were nice and soft. Spare no expense when it comes to the sheets! We spent the majority of the time down on the dock no matter how windy or cold it might have been, and it was both! We caught two turtles and three Catfish on night two as well as some rain. After realizing that we forgot some of the more needed items for Breakfast, Lunch, And dinner we headed to town and had dinner and Margaritas at El Patio...FYI-The Blueberry Margarita was bigger than the catfish we caught, but be prepared to wait a while as the staff was a little slow. We picked up groceries, and more bait and headed back dockside to try our hand at some more fishing. Spent the final night listening to pine cones bounce off the tin roof and indulging in a little WWE action. This was a much needed breath of fresh air and the perfect place to accomplish some peace and quiet, margaritas, and Catfish! Our thanks to the owners of the Crappie House for providing us with the perfect get away from the big city! We will be back...when it's a little warmer! :-)

Hello. We want to introduce ourselves and tell you about this place. We are Bryan and Jamie, We have been married 32 years and have always dreamed of a beautiful lake front home, which we have found in the Crappie House. We bought this lovely location from Carol and Tom Dec 2024, who were sad to leave, but we reassured them we would love this place like they did.

This is a historic property, one of the first built at Toledo Bend Reservoir. The retaining wall was built in 1968. The property was owned by the Gibson’s Discount Center, who were the first store similar to Walmart, before they took over the US, hence Gibson Point. Here is a link to the Gibson story if you are interested. https://gsriley.com/2018/10/09/the-story-of-gibsons/
Bryan, my husband has been fishing on Toledo Bend for 45 years with his family. This lake is teaming with great fish and abundant wildlife. It’s a great lake to fish, get awesome pictures, and relax. We are happy to share this place with you and hope you find it as wonderful as we do.

Bryan and Jamie Shelton

Why they chose this property

Crappie House offers a unique opportunity to stay in a mid-century modern cabin and to live the good life as you lounge on the balcony or dine over the water in the screened dock house. And of course, there is the world-class fishing, not to mention the large outdoor area, perfect for creating memories with your family or friends and taking family pictures.

What makes this property unique

Few properties offer the acreage, accessibility to the lake, and the amenities that Crappie House has to offer, including a semi-private boat launch, fire pit and screened dock house with sitting and dining areas. Located just north of the Pendleton Bridge, Crappie House is situated at nearly the midpoint of the lake, allowing access to both the north and south ends, close to the Louisiana border. Guests may fish off the dock house balcony or along the seawall (be aware of large boulders along the sea wall and of the slippery seawall). For swimming, there is a smooth sandbar in the cove perfect for floating and kids' swimming -- go out from the launch to the white pole. It is usually 2-4 feet deep.
