We are just 2 miles from Pactola lake, located along Hwy 385, pavement the entire way with only a short gravel drive to the cabins.

We have used locally sourced materials in our building as well as highlighting local artists in our decor. Each master bed is covered with an authentic handmade native star quilt.

As you sit out and enjoy the campfire, you can see the stars with no light pollution. Depending on the time of year you can hear the owls calling to one another, hear the singing of the coyotes, the bugling of the elk, or listen to the turkey as they get ready to roost. Our cabins help you to enjoy the action-packed days of your vacation even more by giving you a place to come and relax and enjoy nature at the end of your day.

Our cabin specifics are:

Visit to Rapid City

We absolutely loved our stay at Campfire Cabins. Our three year old had such a blast playing with the goats and chasing rabbits. The cabin was immaculate and we appreciated all the extra accommodations - snacks and fresh eggs! Would definitely stay here again and will be recommending to all of our friends!!

Perfect Cabin

The cabin was very clean and comfortable. They provided maps and info for the local area, movies and a tv in case we stayed inside, and contacted me halfway through our stay to ensure we had everything we needed. Great cabin and property!

Week in the Hills

The cabin was very welcoming and clean. We met Sarah the day we checked and was very accommodating. The fresh eggs and goodies in the basket was not expected and a pleasant surprise. We have stayed in many places around there and thought we would try staying here this time and have no regrets! Plan on coming back!

Great little cabin

We came to the Hills for a quick weekend and loved our stay in this cute cabin. Fully stocked with needed essentials and included eggs from the chickens running wild. Our 9year old son enjoyed the chickens and kittens and chasing the bunnies! Would definitely stay again on any trip to Hills. Only thing we missed was a couch or comfy chair to sit on.

Very clean and cozy cabin

The cabin, bedding, and towels were all nice and clean when we arrived. Sarah had thought of everything we could possibly need during our stay. We enjoyed fresh eggs from their chickens daily and our kids loved all of the bunnies on the property. If we visit the black hills in the future, we will definitely stay here again.

Great stay

The cabin was centrally located, easy access to the local site seeing and trail riding. Very clean. Host was very accommodating and responsive. Only downside, no couch or chair to lounge in. I wouldnt say it would be a good place for smaller children due to the steep steps to get to the loft. We enjoyed our stay.

We loved it!

Such a great, central property to all of the Black Hills! Cabins are stocked with videos, games, and even some snacks and farm fresh eggs offered by Sarah and Al. They are super responsive and we loved having the animals wandering around. Campfire at night was a great opportunity to chat with other visitors and roast s’mores. Absolutely recommend!

Great place

This was a great place to stay. It was very quiet and so very clean. The only problem I had was in the pictures of the listing it showed a queen bed with two different quilts which led me to believe there were two queen beds in the cabin. When reading the description it did say one queen bed on main floor and two mattresses on floor in loft . With this said it was still a great place. The small little touches the owner adds made our stay really nice. The cabin was clean, comfortable, great location. The goats, bunnies and ducks on the the property made it fun. The only thing missing was my grandkids because they would have loved this place.

Family trip to Black Hills

The cabin was located right in the middle of everything. We are a family of 5 so hotel rooms are difficult because not enough beds, so having 3 queen beds was perfect. The cabin was clean and stocked very well. Our kids enjoyed the loft area, but be warned you can not stand up there and there is no window. Beds were comfortable. Our kids enjoyed the animals roaming on the property. We would stay here again and highly recommend it.

Over The Top

It could not have been any better. Place was spotless which is the most important to me. Owner, Sarah, was so friendly and accommodating. The room was so well equipped of anything you could possibly have forgotten. The wild life was one of my favorite parts, bunnies, chickens, ducks, goats and kitty cats were fun to have around and feed. Neighbors were friendly next to us. I would definitely recommend this place over any other.

Great stay at Campfire Cabin #3!

What a wonderful family cabin as a home base for exploring the Black Hills! Sarah and Al outfitted the cabin so thoughtfully and thoroughly. Everything was clean, towels and bedding were soft, kitchen had ample space and supplies, everything was as described. Additionally, hosts had special extras like eggs from their free range chickens, an assortment of games and movies, and a binder full of suggestions on local restaurants, kid friendly activities, rainy day activities, etc. Our kids loved having the loft to themselves! We were happy to support their small family business and highly recommend Campfire Cabins! Also - Pactola Lake is only 10min away and offers boat rentals on the largest and deepest lake in SD, don’t miss!

Cute little cabin

Nice local but would have loved if could not hear traffic on main street. Cabin cute but tiny. Only 4 can fit at most, Only 4 chairs at table and that is only seating in cabin. Loft was a bit buggy. Loved campfire. Cabin at base of black hills.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Sutton

Host profile image
Campfire Cabins is proudly owned by Albert & Sarah Sutton. We grew up in the Black Hills. We were high school sweethearts and married after graduation. We then moved to Rapid City for work. 25 years and 6 children later we had the opportunity to purchase land and move back to the Black Hills. We soon realized how much we had missed the beauty and serenity of the local area.

We decided to turn our property into an organic hobby farm with a large greenhouse, chickens, ducks & turkeys, milking goats, and a handful of beef cows. We also decided to build cabins near our home to share with other families wanting to experience all the Black Hills have to offer. With 2 children still at home, we own and operate the cabins as family business. We look forward to getting to know you and be an added blessing to your vacation experience!

Why they chose this property

We believe family is important, and we want to give your family a memorable vacation!
We know how stressful it can be on everyone stuck in a car all day. Once you get here there is plenty of room for your kiddos to run around, play ball, and have a water fight on the front lawn while you take a breather and unpack. There are toys, games, books, and movies for them to use. Grab a drink and have a seat on the front porch and just enjoy their energy and happiness :)

Our cabins have a full-sized kitchen for you to prepare and cook snacks & meals. There is a small dining table inside each cabin and picnic tables and chairs outside for you to sit around and enjoy the togetherness of a meal and conversation.

With 6 children of our own, we know how expensive travel can be! Vacations don't have to be costly or "flashy". Kids will remember the TIME and EXPERIENCES you give them. They will remember bottle feeding calves up in the Sutton's barn and playing with the baby rabbits. They will remember the days you spent hiking, boating, or ATVing with them outdoors. They will remember the other kids they met at the campfire and the smores! They will remember playing soccer, beanbags, or flashlight tag with those same new friends while you get a chance to relax around the campfire and visit with other families from around the country. Want to know which trails are the best? Ask the other grandparents & parents who have already hiked/rode them! What is the best scenic drive? Is the pontoon boat or ATV rental worth it? Where are the best restaurants? Everyone is willing to help you out & share their experiences.

We (Al & Sarah) live on the property and are always available to answer your questions. Feel free to call or message us anytime! We are down at the campfire most nights, so come down and introduce yourselves! Smores are on us!!
