About this property

Fabulous converted barn in rural location, private swimming pool, great views

Beautifully appointed barn conversion suitable for families, extended families or groups of friends set in an idyllic rural location above the River Tardoire within the Parc naturel Regional Perigord-Limousin. Blessed with clean air, great views and open skies this is a great place for your escape.

Ground floor: spacious hallway leading to a Utility room and a changing area with separate shower and wc. A wide staircase leads to the first floor.

First Floor: 75 sqm living/dining/kitchen area with large 3.3m x1.5m central kitchen island and granite worktops. The kitchen is well appointed with two ovens, two fridges, freezer, microwave, coffee maker, plenty of pans, utensils, plates, cutlery and glasses sufficient for large gatherings. The dining table seats up to 16 people. There is a wood burning stove if needed. The second open and airy 60 sqm living area with large wood burner and games/gym area offers plenty of indoor space to suit everyone.

Second Floor: the master bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with bath, shower, wc and washbasin. It has twin beds that can fix together as a super king size double. Three further bedrooms are doubles with en-suite shower, wc and washbasin. The fifth bedroom has an interconnecting lockable door to bedroom 4 so ideal as a family suite with twin beds or super king size. There is a house bathroom with bath, wc and washbasin.

The accomodation is spacious and flexible capable of sleeping up to 12 people with 5 double bedrooms, two of which convert to twin bed if required with extra single beds available.

Due to the nature of the site and the design over three floors the site is not suitable for people with mobility issues. The staircases have open treads, are not equipped with safety gates and there are internal and external balconies, therefore, any children under the age of 4 must be closely supervised at all times.

Externally there are terraced areas all around the property providing sunny and shaded sitting and dining areas to suit the time of day and weather. There is a large balcony off the living room kitchen and a smaller balcony above off the main bedroom corridor. A large sail can provide additional shade at the rear when required. The 10 x 5m swimming pool sits privately in the rear garden with paved terrace for the sunbeds with soft washable cushions. The pool has roman steps down to a 0.7m to 1m shallow end with a 2m deep for the swimmers.

For those looking for an active break there are many routes for walking and off road cycling in the immediate vicinity and the area generally. There are also plenty of good quality, safe quiet roads for road cycling but the terrain is not flat. Wildlife is abundant so keep and eye out for red squirrels, pine martens, deer, foxes, badgers, wild boar and all the spectacular birds.

Nearby we have two golf courses. Firstly, the 18 hole Golf International de La Preze which is incredibly challenging and also has a driving range and 18 hole Pitch and Putt course, around 10 minutes drive away. The second is the 9 hole Golf de Genet which is around a 20 minute drive. Also locally in July and August it is possible to hire canoes for trips of varying lengths along the Tardoire or further afield in the beautiful small town of Brantome, which is worth a visit at any time of year. There are plenty of other activities, such as fishing and horse riding, to be found locally and there are many beautiful, villages, towns and chateaux in the region. The area offers many regional gastronomic delights, including Michelin star restaurants, and the local market each Wednesday in Piegut is worth visiting.

The rural situation means at night there is no light pollution. The sky at night is absolutely spectacular on a clear night with the Milky Way wrapping across the sky. A telescope is available for more detailed observations. Also keep an ear and eye open for the bats , owls, badgers, wild boar and the dormice (loir) with their large eyes.

About the host

Host profile image
We are Neil and Christine Harvey. We bought this property in 2000 as a holiday home for us and our four children. Originally it was just an old farm cottage two empty barns with surrounding fields, longing to become a garden. After making the cottage watertight, the first real project was construction of the swimming pool in 2002. We agonised for several years over converting the large barn and what to convert it into. Finally we decided on converting into a large modern house in a style not usually found in the French countryside. Our dream was finally realised in 2009 after 3 years of design, re-design and construction. We hope you will love the result.
We now live back in the cottage on site, which we have since renovated and so we are around to help guests with anything they require.

Why they chose this property

We chose this area of France after honeymooning nearby and fell in love with the countryside which is so lush and green with beautiful forests and lakes everywhere.
Wildlife and wild flowers are in abundance it's a joyous place to live.

What makes this property unique

We believe our barn conversion is a unique, unexpectedly modern and wonderful family space with two large living rooms, large kitchen and dining area with lots of outdoor space for al fresco dining. Situated in our quiet, tranquil hamlet but close enough to walk into the village in 15 minutes. There is very little traffic and it always feels incredibly safe. We love the outdoors and we are surrounded by beautiful countryside with lots of options for walking, running, cycling and other outdoor pursuits.
