One of the largest municipalities in Greece, Kallithea is in the south of Athens bordering the Saronic Gulf and Athens’ historic centre, making it an ideal spot to discover Athens.
In 2016 Kallithea got an important upgrade when the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre was unveiled close to the Faliro Bay in the south of the suburb.
This ultramodern facility was designed by Renzo Piano and is made up of a landscaped park around stirring new venues for the Greek National Opera and National Library.
By the water, Kallithea’s waterfront was revitalized at the advent of the 2004 Olympics and has a waterfront plaza, while down in Faliron are cafes and restaurants next to the dazzling superyachts at the Flisvos Marina.
All the while, the timeless Acropolis and the other monuments of ancient Athens are moments on the 550 bus, by tram or taxi.
Let’s explore the best things to do in Kallithea:
1. Stavros Niarchos Park/Foundation Cultural Centre
It’s no secret that Athens has a shortage of public green spaces, which is partly why this new cultural complex for the National Opera and National Library of Greece has been welcomed with open arms.
On a gentle gradient are fountains, a “Great Lawn” for public performances, play areas, a 400-metre seawater canal, a circular labyrinth and paths along little geometric planted with endemic species.
It’s a scented wonderland with lavender, boxwood, thyme, olive trees, roses boxwood, cistus, rosemary and many more herbs and trees.
The garden climbs 32 metres, leading seamlessly to the green roof of the cultural centre, where there’s a panoramic view of Athens, the Acropolis and the Faliro Bay and down over the plaza between the library and opera house.
Also at the summit is the “Lighthouse”, a 900-square metre terrace clad with photovoltaic cells that power the complex.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation was set up after the death of the Greek shipping tycoon Stavros Niarchos in 1996. The foundation funded this lauded new cultural centre and then donated it to the Greek state in 2017. It was designed by the feted Italian architect Renzo Piano and is a sight to be seen even if you have no particular plans as there’s a programme of outdoor performances, classes, concerts, cinema screenings and exhibitions in the summer, which we’ll talk about below.
At the top is the opera house, which has an auditorium for 1,400 and a smaller alternative stage, staging opera, ballet, theatre and classical music.
On the menu in early 2018 was a performance of Henry Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, the Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan, Tosca, the Magic Flute and the Nutcracker
Flisvos Marina:
South of the Sports Pavilion in Faliron is where you can see how Greece’s other half live.
The Flisvos Marina has more luxury yachts than any other port in the country.
Facing the gleaming armada of superyachts is a Mediterranean esplanade with lawns, rows of trees and a choice of cafes, bars and restaurants.
For little ones, the Volta Fun Park here has bouncy castles, slides, bumper boats and trampolines.
And being on the eastern tip of the Faliro Bay the Flisvos Marina is another dreamy place to watch the sun setting behind Piraeus across the bay.
Several busses like the 550 runs towards all parts of the city. Tram stop nearby as well.
