About this property
Wayside Cottage, Dennington
Wayside – an enchanting Grade II listed pink cottage – sits on the village green, with the café, church and excellent pub across the road. Oozing character, this 2-bedroom home offers a cosy retreat for romantic getaways, or the perfect base for a small family or friends wanting to escape to the country. Ideal for rambling walks, pub lunches, and exploring the Heritage Coast, Wayside Cottage is 5 minutes from the historical town of Framlingham, and 25 minutes from Woodbridge and Aldeburgh.
Welcome back in time! As soon as you step through the front door into the cosy living room, you know you’ve arrived somewhere special. The ancient timber beams, and double sided fireplace are steeped in history, dating back to 1600. Today, the comforts of home have been enhanced with a plush three seater sofa, a separate easy chair, a Smart TV with Freeview channels, and a wood burner for those chilly winter evenings.
Wayside was originally two homes, with one solid chimney stack rising up through the middle, serving both families on either side. Today, the two original homes have been combined into one and a short passageway leads you from the living room, past the fireplace into a magical dining room. Here, the hand carved beams, brick bread ovens and thick ‘wattle and daub’ walls are the perfect backdrop for romantic dinners around the 4-seater dining table.
Tucked away around the other side of the chimney stack is a dedicated work space with a computer monitor and HDMI connector, should you require it. Although the view of the beautiful Medieval church across the road may distract you from work.
Your furry friends will love it too, with their own dog door to come and go as they please into the fully fenced and secure back yard.
The living room also leads to the kitchen, a newer addition to the 17th century cottage, where the ceilings positively soar up to the roof level – a splendid relief for anyone over 6’! The kitchen is fully equipped with a wall oven, induction cooktop, dishwasher, microwave, fridge freezer, double Belfast sink, kettle and toaster.
A further door leads from the kitchen to the separate laundry, where you’ll find a washing machine, dryer, and a coat rack with shoe storage. The laundry leads to the country-style bathroom, with a full size bath (including shower), WC and hand basin.
From the laundry you can also step out into the stylish, private courtyard with its built-in bench seats and bespoke table - a wonderful sun trap to enjoy long Sunday lunches, or pre-dinner drinks on warm summer evenings.
Upstairs there’s a quiet reading nook on the landing with its original 400 year old floor boards. Ducking through a tiny doorway, you’ll find the secret bedroom hidden away behind sweeping curtains. Here, guests can nestle into a high-set double bed, enjoying their own cosy retreat, complete with sheepskin rugs and lambswool cushions.
Past the secret bedroom, lies the generously proportioned master bedroom, lined with its historic framework of timber posts and beams. From your super-king-sized bed you can look out at the picturesque views across the village green to the café and church.
Escaping to the country never felt so good!
Wayside Cottage was built in 1600 when the average height was around 5’5, and lower ceilings and doors made for warmer interiors. While this is part of its charm, it also means you need to be constantly aware of low-slung beams and solidly built door frames that require you to duck. Please mind your head at all times!
