About this property
Langston House - a house that sleeps 14 guests in 7 bedrooms
Welcome to this beautifully refurbished country estate, hidden from view – you only know when you know – and nestled into the unspoilt Devon landscape, providing all the comfort of a substantial English home, with the space and flexibility for exclusive use. Langston lies just a mile from the glittering coastline, tucked away in a magical spot of the picturesque South Hams countryside. Located close to the South West Coast Path, it is perfectly situated for exploring this stunning stretch of Devonshire coastline and enjoying far-reaching ocean views from dramatic cliff tops. The charming village of Kingston, just a mile away, is a timeless slice of old Devon. Utterly picturesque with chocolate-box cottages and their rambling gardens, and a classic village pub at its heart. For coastal adventures, a short drive takes you to Bigbury-on-Sea, where you can catch a wave in a surf lesson, glide across the water on a paddleboard, or hop aboard the iconic sea tractor to explore the historic Burgh Island.
Stay at this exquisite Grade II-listed Georgian farmhouse, where everything – yes, everything – has been thought about and catered for. There is a sun-trap terrace adjacent to the swimming pool building with Provence-inspired outside dining for fourteen guests. Enjoy a dip in the heated swimming pool and take a spritzer-fuelled lunch outside afterwards. Turn up the audio system that operates throughout the entire ground floor, including all living areas, the swimming pool and pool terrace outside. For those who feel most at home in the kitchen, the walled kitchen garden brims with herbs aplenty to add to the dinner pot (or garnish the mojitos!). The Victorian walled kitchen garden brims with fruit and vegetables for guests to pick and enjoy a farm-to-table experience. There is a charming lawned garden overlooking a pretty paddock – wander on further, and you'll find the orchard, yours to explore and seemingly plucked from a storybook. Beyond is Langston's enchanting lake, with various seating areas to take in the beautiful surroundings of this quintessential pocket. Follow the 2.5 km trail around the lake, perhaps bring a picnic too, and while away a sunny afternoon amongst the dragonflies and cow parsley. Come evening, take flutes of freshly poured champagne and get the fire pit roaring for an evening of storytelling and stargazing.
Step inside Langston House and uncover a magnificent home offering true privacy with no interruptions – simply the time, space and comfort to feel fully immersed with family and friends. There's a beautiful farmhouse kitchen – a warming Aga exudes cosiness, and all the cupboards are full of every mod con for culinary creations. There is a large kitchen table to pile up plates of pancakes and pots of hot tea, with a door swung open to the garden – this is a place for slow mornings spent together. The kitchen leads onto a big dining room with a beautiful handcrafted oak dining table, large flagstones underfoot and a huge fireplace with a wood-burning stove. After supper, retire to the sitting room with three large squashy sofas and the heat of the crackling wood-burning stove. Through an archway, you will find the library, with a sofa and armchairs, a pretty writing desk, and shelves stacked with books and family games. Life at this self-catering country home was designed to be fun. Langston will entertain all, and both big and little children in the group will race to get to the cinema room. This is no ordinary cinema room. It comes complete with a popcorn machine, drinks fridge, cinema lighting, blackout blinds and tiered velvet seats.
Exhausted from the fresh sea air, rural hilltop rambles with the dog, family games of hide and seek in the orchard, and splashing about in the pool – it's time to retire to roll-top bathtubs and deliciously snug beds. Two of the seven beautiful bedrooms at Langston House are found on the ground floor. Both of these bedrooms have a super king 6ft bed (zip and link). Here, there is also a beautiful walk-in shower room with warming underfloor heating and luxury fluffy towels. Upstairs, you will find two more bedrooms, both offering sweet slumbers; one soothing king or twin room with a rainfall shower en-suite bathroom. Next to it, another beautifully calming bedroom with twin beds (zip and link) and an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bath and a walk-in shower. All bedrooms are pooled with natural light, and the beds are swathed in luxurious linens and crisp cottons.
The second wing of the house provides three further bedrooms: one with a wonderful king-sized brass bed and its own en-suite. Next to it, another beautifully appointed bedroom with a super king 6ft bed (zip and link). Here, you'll also find a spacious family bathroom that does not feel out of step with the rest of the home, invested with no less love and personality. A freestanding slipper copper bath for long leisurely soaks sits next to a marbled shower. Then, you will discover the master bedroom – a stunning room with a super king 6ft bed and large sash windows, and an en-suite bathroom with a freestanding roll-top bathtub with garden views.
