About this property
Merchant's Nook 1 bedroom property and private garden in Upton, Broadland
Merchant's Nook is in the centre of the pretty Broadland village of Upton in Norfolk. Upton has a Broad and fen which is easily accessible and only a five minute walk from the property. The Broad has been designated as a SSSI and hosts species of butterfly and dragon flies.
Merchant's Nook enjoys private outside garden space with seating and barbeque facilities and has off road parking. Upton benefits from a community owned pub and village shop which is just a few minutes walk from Merchant's Nook. The river Bure is five minutes walk from the property. A twenty minute walk or five minute drive takes you to the village of Acle with buses every 15 minutes to the beautiful medieval city of Norwich or to the coastal towns of Gorleston, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft.
The owner lives in the attached property so is on call only where needed.
Merchant's Nook has a fully equipped kitchen with oven and hob, freezer and fridge and a washing machine. Tumble drying is available if required and there is outside drying space in the spacious garden area. The property benefits from full central heating throughout and constant hot water and is double glazed throughout.
The bedroom has black out blinds to ensure a relaxing nights sleep and an ottoman style double bed which provides extra storage for cases etc. and has a large hanging rail for clothes.
In the open plan kitchen sitting room is a SMART TV and plug sockets have USB ports. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped with all our guests needs catered for. Ground coffee is always available along with instant coffee and tea. There is also a Dolce Gusto machine and variety of coffees. The owner Hilary provides a welcome pack with bread, butter, home made jam/ marmalade and fresh milk and also offers a hamper service with guests requirements on booking.
Upton has no street lighting and offers a perfect location for stargazing in the evenings.
The community pub is called 'The White Horse' and has a varied menu to suit everyone and both indoor and outside eating areas. The White Horse community Trust also runs its own village shop just next door to the pub and is mostly run by volunteers. We are proud to offer a huge variety of fresh fruit and veg, locally sourced goods and groceries. We are renowned throughout the local area for our great pub and shop and people travel long distances to walk, shop and then have a pub lunch here in Upton!
Norwich is the only city in the UK that sits within a National Park. It is famous for its medieval streets and the fabulous 11th century Cathedral plus it has become a go to shopping city combining the large department stores such as John Lewis and M and S with The Lanes, which hosts independent shops selling a range of goods. It hosts many events including the famous Norfolk and Norwich Festival. It is also a city of Literature and holds many literary events at the imposing Forum and at the medieval Dragon Hall.
If your preference is a quiet coastline, Norfolk has it all, from the soft sandy beaches of the East coast, to the wilder cliffs of Sheringham, Cromer and Cley. All are a short drive from Merchant's Nook and you can walk across the local footpath to Acle and catch a bus directly to the beaches of Gorleston, Great Yarmouth or Lowestoft.
Merchant's Nook provides a base to explore the whole of Norfolk whilst nestling in a quiet position in a pretty village with all the amenities that you require. If you have paddle boards, bring them! If you have kayaks, bring them, do you have a small boat? bring it!
Hilary looks forward to welcoming you

About the host
Hosted by Hilary Hanbury

I am a retired but very active ex Education Manager. I really enjoy hosting having owned a couple of cottages many moons ago. It is great to share the amenities of my lovely village with new people
Why they chose this property
I am a Norfolk girl, but have moved to every corner of the UK in my life. I love travelling myself, especially to South East Asia. My children were raised in Scotland and Plymouth and all have the travel bug too.
What makes this property unique
Merchant's Nook is, to quote previous guests, a cosy corner of Norfolk and like a home from home. It has everything you need.
