About this property
Whitegates - a house that sleeps 8 guests in 4 bedrooms
Whitegates occupies a prime position along the beachfront in the charming rural coastal village of Rockcliffe. The house makes full use of its location with most rooms having uninterrupted, captivating sea views across Rough Island, Hestan Island, towards the Lake District and beyond.
The house has recently undergone a full renovation to provide contemporary, tastefully decorated accommodation with every modern comfort thought of, including a sun terrace which is accessed through two of the first-floor bedrooms, providing the ideal spot to enjoy the magical views and stunning sunsets.
To the front of the house is a sandy beach, which provides plenty of opportunities for sand castle building, rock pooling at low tide and family games. A network of paths to the north, take you through mixed woodlands and wildflower meadows to Kippford, a nearby busy sailing centre, and also a popular destination for eating out with two pubs and a tea room. In the other direction, the path follows the shoreline to Castle Point and then along cliff tops towards Sandyhills. The beautiful Solway Coast offers spectacular scenery and wildlife, with a bird sanctuary on Rough Island, accessible at low tide and the RSPB Reserve at Mersehead, a short drive away. Local leisure facilities include sailing in the neighbouring village of Kippford and golf courses at Colvend, Southerness, Kippford and Dalbeattie. ‘World-class' mountain-biking opportunities with a stage of the popular 7-stanes and walks in nearby Dalbeattie forest.
The wider area provides plenty of sites to explore, including Sweetheart Abbey at New Abbey where there is also one of the oldest Corn Mills which is maintained by Historic Scotland and open to the public. At Castle Douglas you can explore Threave Estate which includes Threave Castle with its ospreys and Threave Gardens, all maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. While for the younger generation a visit to Ernespie Farm Park provides endless entertainment with both indoor and outdoor play. The vibrant Artists' Town of Kirkudbright,, with events, exhibitions and activities taking place across the year - and a cooking school - is a short drive away.
