About this property

Central Oregon Getaway! Incredible Lake and Mountain views! Dark Sky Area!

Views to die for in Central Oregon's high desert. Beautiful, rustic (but very nice) cabin/home situated on 20 acres of untouched land, 17 miles S.E. of Prineville. Just up the hill a ways from Oregon's first designated Dark Sky Park. A stargazers delight! Three sides of the property abut undeveloped Bureau of Land Management public forest which allows for unobstructed and amazing views of the Prineville Reservoir, volcanic rock formations, and surrounding mountains as far as the eye can see. Watch eagles, hawks, deer, and other wildlife from the porch just a few steps out your front door. Step out at night and you will be enthralled by the brightness of the stars, planets, and Milky Way Galaxy.
This is a wonderful getaway for couples, families, friends, and even business get-togethers. Our cabin features a full kitchen with modern appliances, living room area with fireplace, TV with cable, internet, two full bathrooms, washer/dryer, and garage. The cabin sleeps 8, with a room of 4 bunk beds and two bedrooms with queen-sized beds. All bedrooms upstairs. The master bedroom features a patio deck, perfect for morning coffee or tea, night caps, or sunbathing in solitude. Onsite activities include horseshoes with a regulation-sized court, slate pool table, darts, swing, bar-b-que grill and a seasonal fire pit. Relax at the end of your day under the night (or day) sky in the private hot tub just off the porch. You will feel totally secluded. Memories of bright blue skies and fresh clean air will linger long after you've ended your stay.
If you are looking for adventure or other outdoor activities to explore, just a mile down the hill is the state park and boat dock. Bike, hike, rock climb, swim, boat, fish, go on spectacular sightseeing expeditions to the Painted Hills or John Day Fossil Beds or just simply stop anywhere in the most incredible surroundings of Oregon's High Desert lands.
Prineville is known as the "doorway" to the pine studded Ochoco Mountains, Ochoco National Forest, and the Crooked River National Grassland. There are good restaurants in town, along with some great little antique, home decor, gift, and clothing shops. You will find several spas, coffee shops, and, of course, really nice people. For a taste of Old Prineville, stop in Prineville Menswear on S. Main where "really good stuff' is available. Lunch at Dad's Cafe next door or have a burger at the Tastee Treat on Highway 26, across from Pioneer Park. Pine Theater is just like yesteryear showing current flicks ($8) and concessions for $2 or under. Although this vacation spot isn't about crowds or malls, the trendy (and friendly) city of Bend, with its wonderful shopping district, is an easy drive 35 minutes from Prineville.

Your pet will be welcome with permission from managemnt and acceptance of the Pet Policy. Please communicate the number of pets with your inquiry. Pets are limited to two dogs and the pet fee will be $50 per pet per stay.

Unbeatable view, excellent condition and amenities!

My fiancé, friends and I stayed at this home for an extended weekend and it was simply wonderful! The view was unbeatable, hot tub hot the spot, and the amenities in the kitchen and pool table/darts board were awesome! Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here looking for a quiet and nature-filled retreat. It was a bit far from the closest town (Prineville, OR), but we loved that it was more isolated and on its own piece of land.

Different experience but great time

Really wanted to have a really “dark sky” experience, but were treated to a really bright moon instead. Lit up the landscape, looked just like a winter scene. Different treat. The really good thing is “no rain” as forecasted and a wonderful time was had by all!

What a Gift!

Pete's Cabin is amazing! We so enjoyed the quiet beauty and the amazing scent of Juniper in the air! (So many Juniper tree's!) We also got a HUGE rainbow across the sky while we enjoyed the hot tub. This place is incredible.

Simply Magical

This was our 3rd year at Pete’s Cabin! We had it all--deer, coyotes, lizards, snow, windstorms, and sunny skies. This home has become a special place for my family to find peace after a stressful year. Thank you for sharing this magical place with us!

Family vacation

We had a great time at the cabin. It was very remote and quiet. Loved the fire pit outside, hot tub and the horse shoes. It was a very relaxing and the views were amazing!! The only negative were the beds were not very comfortable. Otherwise the cabin met all of our needs.

Just as advertised

This was just what we were looking for! A comfortable remote cabin with wilderness views that don't quit! The only thing that might have enhanced our stay would have been to see more wildlife, but I wasn't expecting that to be a guarantee... Perhaps, if we visited during a season other than winter we may have seen more.

Such an amazing getaway for our family! Plenty of room in the house and roaming around the property. No neighbors, SOOOO QUIET! It was amazing! Its a place you want to come to and never leave! Most relaxing vacation ever! Soooo many stars! Just beautiful, the town or Prineville was amazing! Reminded us of childhood, just the kind of getaway we were looking for. Best Place Ever!!

My wife and I spent our 19th anniversary here. The place was neat, clean, well kept, cozy, quiet, private pretty much out there at the very end of the road. Absolutely loved it. We enjoyed the hot tub, the pool table, had some great uninterrupted and undisturbed conversations that were long overdue in that spacious downstairs.

Awesome views

It was very clean beautiful views. But.. hard to find got there in dark no lights on. Master bed not comfortable . Need to hav we all you want when you get there its 19 miles back to town. Nothing exceptionally nice for they knew it was my anniversary. For what we paid could of been some kind of a nice token. Also for what we paid for cleaning was ridiculous since we were required to clean and vacuum floors before we left. All they had to do was make a bed. We did floors dishes and laundry and cleaned out fireplace. Crazy

Couples retreat

My wife and I have been renting a house for a week every summer for the past 8 years with two other couples. We’ve been eyeing Pete’s Cabin for the last several years and finally had our stay this year in mid-July. What an amazing place! The views from the back covered patio made it feel like we were the only people around for hundreds of miles. Very secluded and it was the perfect, restful week. The weather was extremely hot (mid 90’s) all week, but the AC kept the inside cool and comfortable. Even with the hot weather, the covered patio and constant slight breeze allowed us to spend most of our time outside. The listing mentioned that the well water is drinkable, and that you can bring water if you want. We found that the well water tasted great. No need to bring water, in our opinion. The host was super communicative throughout the registration and check in process via the VRBO app messenger. The house is about a 30 minute drive to Prineville, so come prepared with all amenities. There is not a “corner store” just down the street. The check out responsibilities were very minimal, which was appreciated by our group. Star gazing, time in the hot tub, and the views! It was the perfect week of love, laughter, and food and drink with great friends. We would recommend this home to anyone looking for privacy, natural beauty and rest. We will be back!

Wanted to give 5 stars

Property is beautiful. Surface clean - we had to clean some areas that hadn’t been touched in a while. When I pay top dollar for a property I expect it all to be clean., not just surface (Instructions ask you to take all items from refrigerator but the door was filled things people had left including a raw egg (?)..) They have a strict pet policy but they amended for us and that was great but it meant I was cleaning everyday. Laurie the PM is great and has good sense of humor. The 3 stars is because for three nights in a row the smoke alarms (for no reason we weren’t cooking indoors or using the fireplace) would take turns going off - and being hard wired we had to go and turn them off at the breaker and then another section would Go off - so I had three nights of no sleep and freaked out dogs. Finally after the third night the caretaker called and suggested I just snap the smoke alarms out of the ceiling (they could have told Me this after night one). As there aren’t any curtains on any of the windows (view and location) it makes it difficult to catch up On sleep during the day. The owners never acknowledged this deficit or do anything to make right we were left on our own pretty much to manage. Then other little things like no instructions to work tv and dvd and people firing guns all hours on the blm land (owners can’t control that but good to know going in). Because of the sleepless nights it was the least relaxing vacation I have had - and given the privacy and surroundings it should have been different.

Breathtaking sanctuary

Just stunning location. My parents and I were in pure bliss — taking in the stars, the sunsets and sunrises, long walks into Juniper-rich hills. It’s a magnificent cabin. As a writer, this would make an ideal place for solitude and reflection. We did have a scare one night with a late night trespasser on ATV who briefly came onto the property near the house — most likely they were just lost but it rattled us enough to have a sleepless night. Other than that incident, however, it was a fabulous experience and I hope to make many returns.

Host profile image
Mat and Nicole purchased this property in 2017. Mat retired from a private engineering company as a map maker almost 10 yrs ago. He started his own handyman business at the time and retired from his business about a year ago. Mat enjoys using his handyman skills at Pete's Cabin, updating and improving the property, making tables and lamps from juniper wood found in the surrounding area (you will see these items on the porch and throughout the cabin), and just generally enjoying doing the things he loves to do in the beautiful and peaceful surroundings around Pete's Cabin.
Nicole grew up in Portland and met Mat when they both worked for the same mapping company in Portland. After they had their 2 girls, Nicole decided to return to school to become a registered nurse. She currently works in Portland. They have two college aged children who live in the Pacific Northwest and two cats who still live at home.

Why they chose this property

It is simply beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. If you are looking for a vacation location to "get away" with beautiful views of Central Oregon, this is your place. Mat enjoys adding fun things to keep you busy while at Petes cabin. For example, hanging a comfy hammock where you can read your books or take a snooze, a trail to our new horseshoe pit, and a swing to just "while away the hours". We also really enjoy exploring the area. Hiking all over, visiting the Painted Hills (there is a sample you can see from the porch! ), kayaking at the reservoir, and exploring nearby towns. The little town of Post, Oregon, just 14 miles from the cabin, is Oregon State's geographic center.

What makes this property unique

Star gazing in the hot tub is simply the best. The sky is amazingly large and the stars and planets are so bright. We love looking at the Milky Way and tracking the constellations as they travel across the night sky. Occasional shooting stars certainly add to the enjoyment.
