S x SW 2022 Road Trip

We had a very pleasant stay here. Our host, Brian, helped us with a few personal requests. Thanks. He has three dogs. They were either inside or friendly and very well behaved when they were out. The rental is in a quiet, well laid out neighborhood, adjacent to a golf course. We enjoyed several walks in the area.

Quiet and cozy

A quiet place to stay in a quiet neighborhood despite the three large and hospitable dogs for my own dog to play with in the fenced yard.

Picacho Hills

Worked out well for me. I had complete flexibility to visit family & friends locally. Don also generously allowed me to park my tent trailer on the property and two guests slept in that during their visit. His dogs are friendly but you need to be careful when opening the gate so they don’t sneak out.

You Get What You Pay For...

The owner needs to inform future renters that we must "let him know" every time we leave the premises, so that is very sweet, but completely untrained dogs do not get out. This info was NOT provided in the description. I was "admonished" (his words) for this. Furthermore, there was a large clump of blond hair in the shower drain; a random and used bar of soap sat in the shower caddy; only one very small bathroom rug (I mean SMALL). This was the bare bones minimum. I suppose you get what you pay for, but as a seasoned VRBOer, I was dismayed to find there was no fresh soap, shampoo, or conditioner provided as a courtesy. Thankfully, I had brought my own. Sautee pans had no lids; there was no kettle for tea; just a coffee-maker. There were no brochures, maps, or information whatsoever about the area. Thankfully, I am from New Mexico, so I was familiar with Las Cruces, but for snowbirds, etc., this would have been problematic. The dogs were sweet as all get-up, but they were untrained, and it is not the renter's responsibility to contact the owner every time I leave. Additionally, the owner informed me that this was a "mask-free zone." New Mexico mandates that during Covid-19 people wear masks for health and safety, and maintain 6ft of distance. This owner did not include his "mask-free zone" information in his listing; rather, he ignored my request to wear a mask, and easily came within 6 ft of my dog and me. I don't give a rip about the owner's beliefs or politics, but I do care about my health, the health of others close to me, and the health of my community. The property interior was dreary. No color. Just one small couch. No throw blankets, nada. Because of an unusual winter blast of weather, it grew quite cold in the small main room. The heater control is not located in the casita in which I stayed; rather, it is in the owner's home, and is controlled by him. This, too, was not divulged in the listing. This person, frankly, has no business renting out this property. Although a seemingly nice man, he is quite old, and appears to have a difficult time maintaining control of his dogs and the rental itself. This person drives a Jaguar and cannot be obliged to simply provide the basics? I would not recommend staying here at all. It is dark inside; gloomy, and although it has some decent antique art, the place needs a thorough cleaning and renovation.

Nice respite after many miles of traveling

We had everything we needed. Kitchen was well stocked, we were able to do laundry, great location and neighborhood. Don made us feel right at home. We could go to either side of town from this house. We'd definitely stay here again. His dogs were well behaved.

Beautiful & peaceful

The owner was great at communication, check in was a breeze! The property is nestled quietly in an upscale neighborhood. We were not at the property much, just for sleep and shower. But the kitchen has everything you need and the owner is very generous about providing anything you need for a perfect stay. I brought my own pillow as always, the bed was very comfy. Extra blanket provided upon request. The backyard is absolutely breathtaking! The owners dogs are super friendly and playful, I think my husband misses them. Donald made our stay very comfortable and he was great with suggestions on where to eat, sight see, etc We will definitely come back here next time we're in town.

Not a bad little place to stay

An older property within a country club community. It was a little hard to find in the dark. Owner lives onsite and was very nice. Limited TV service but there was Netflix which was good. Only minor complaint was property seemed a little dirty as tile floor needs to be cleaned, but overall was good place to stay. Owner does have 3 dogs but were very well behaved.

Clean, Cute and Homey

Our host went above and beyond to make our stay in the Casita an enjoyable experience...for us and our dog. Casita was well stocked, no need to use any of the 'extras' I brought from home although I was a bit uncomfortable using the beautiful dish's and opted to get some unbreakable paper for our use. Anything that wasn't already there, all we had to do was ask. The yard was also beautiful and completely fenced to make it very pet friendly. Our dog got along with the 'locals' , lost a little weight from all the playing, and slept like a baby most of the way back to SD. Thank you Donald, for making our 1st experience with VRBO exceptional. This will be our preferred option for lodging on any future trips to Las Cruces and we will be sure to recommend to any body we know coming that way.

Dog friendly but quirky rental

This rental met my top three needs. Dog friendly, in Picacho, and less than $100 per night. I had a lot planned so the small TV and small antique settee instead of a comfortable couch was not a problem. The kitchen has everything you might need to prepare a meal. There was a nice shower with plenty of hot water. This is a budget offering in a high end neighborhood. To me, this was much quieter than a hotel and the yard was nice for my dog. There is a gate you will have to leave your car to open and close as you come and go. The owners dogs were very sweet. I was presented with a License to Use agreement to sign when I arrived. I haven't had to do that before and I didn't ask what would happen if I didn't want to sign it.

Comfortable Casita in a Very Nice Neighborhood!

This Casita was just right for us. Perfect size for a couple. Kitchen well supplied with everything we needed! There was even a patio in the back with barbecue grill for our use. The bedroom had lots of storage and a large closet. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom had lots of counter space and a very nice shower. The location in a good safe subdivision was convenient to hiking and state parks. The price was right and the owner very easy to communicate with. Emails are answered promptly. All of our needs were met.

Yes, dear Reader - that photo was taken atop Mt St Helens in August, 1979. Mt St Helens got a 3000 ft haircut in May, 1980. The mountain in the background is Mt Rainier. This tells you much about me - I was an avid hiker, climber, bicycler and all-round adventurer - business and health permitting. I had fallen in love with New Mexico when I attended University here in 1959. The passage of time made living in northern climes increasingly difficult. What better place to spend my "Golden Years" in the forever sunny, rarely snow covered, user friendly clime of New Mexico?

Why they chose this property

Las Cruces is located in the Chihuahua Desert and is surrounded by the incredible rocky peaks of the Organ Mountains, the San Andreas Mountains, and some of the most beautiful desert landscape in the US. The hiking possibilities are endless as are the activities for the young at heart and at least moderately fit. New Mexico State University has many activities which are community oriented throughout the year. This property is located in a country club community near all the wonders Las Cruces provides

What makes this property unique

Why do I love this house, this property, this community? Among other benefits: Space! Space! Space! Additional benefits? Mature community, seasoned citizens like me (geezers), access to the university community, unique culture with roots back to the 1500's. Restaurant wait help that invariably asks "Red or Green?" (chilies) after you have ordered a spicy entree. I assure you - that is unique to New Mexico
