About this property

Charming cottage located on peaceful Lake Bomoseen

*2023 upgrade: a heat pump offering both heat and air conditioning was added to the cottage in March of 2023. We are excited to offer this new amenity to our guests to make your time at the cottage as comfortable as possible!*

Welcome to Sunset Cottage! Enjoy a relaxing and serene getaway at this charming lakeside cottage which faces west and boasts beautiful evening sunsets that can be enjoyed from the screened in porch. The cottage is 2 bedroom, 1 bath and has an open kitchen and living space. This intimate setting allows you to enjoy the peacefulness of nature while still being close to historical Vermont towns.

Located 10 minutes north of Castleton and just under 30 minutes south of Middlebury, this cottage is in the perfect location for graduation weekend or enjoying a peaceful lake house getaway with your family/friends. The cottage is finished with an all pine interior boasting 12+ foot ceilings in the kitchen and living room areas. The front bedroom is furnished with two twin sized beds and the master bedroom overlooks the beautiful screened in porch and lake with a spacious king sized bed. The couch in the living room also folds into a queen sized bed if needed. Enjoy your morning coffee and evening glass of wine on the screened in porch which runs the full width of the house and has a porch swing as well as rocking chairs.

When you're here, we want you to feel at home so Sunset Cottage is equipped with all of the essentials. A Keurig coffee maker, kettle, numerous pots and pans, silverware, dishes, spices and oils, dish soap, sponges, towels (kitchen and bath), linens, and more. You only need to bring your personal items! If you are wondering if there is a specific item at the cottage please feel free to ask! At this time Sunset Cottage is not equipped with kayaks; however, you are welcome to bring your own kayaks, paddle boards, etc.

Sunset Cottage is remote; however, still equipped with the modern amenities you hope for. There is wireless available as well as a Smart TV (log into your own Netflix/Amazon/etc. accounts) and a DVD player is also available. There is a small library of DVDs you are welcome to utilize; however, we welcome you bringing your own in the event of a rainy day! There is not strong cell phone service at the cottage and a land line is provided (a rustic rotary phone in all its vintage charm!).

Sunset Cottage is located 2.5 miles north of Crystal Beach; a public beach for swimming and offers kayaks available to rent, picnic sites, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and docks for boating and fishing. Additionally there are numerous state parks close by if you're interested in walks/hikes through nature or just want to enjoy the scenery.

Other local attractions include multiple restaurants just minutes away in Castleton, a 5 minute drive to Bomossen Golf Club or take a drive into the town of Middlebury and enjoy local shops and restaurants.

Check-in is 3:00pm and check-out is 11:00am. The cottage is not fully winterized and currently open for rentals May - October. There is a small electric fireplace as well as heat pump which offers both heat and AC.

Note: the cottage is waterfront; however, this particular part of the lake has a significant amount of vegetation and is not ideal for swimming. It is a great spot for launching a kayak or for dogs to play in the water. For swimming accessibility we recommend checking out Crystal Beach 2.5 miles south of the cottage.

Perfect spot on the lake!

We had a wonderful week at Sunset Cottage on Lake Bomoseen. We’ve been to VT many times but never to this part of the state so it was great to explore new territory. The cottage was perfect for what we were looking for - it was secluded but not far from restaurants. It was outfitted with everything we needed for a week away. The kitchen was well equipped if you're not eating out every meal - we didn't use the grill but liked that it was available. The screened in porch was such a nice spot at any time of day - overlooking the lake there were lots of birds and wildlife to view and enjoy. The owners left bird books and excellent binoculars for bird watching. We didn't bring kayaks but you could easily launch from the dock. The king bed was very comfortable with plenty of blankets for cool VT nights. Highly recommend the Sunset Cottage!

Relaxing

Our first time in the cottage, and we are hoping to return in the future. It is a wonderful, peaceful place, with very relaxing and positive energy. Right on the lake with beautiful views. We enjoyed observing all kinds of birds and other wildlife. The screened porch is also great, the views of the lake are best from there. The cottage was very clean, and well equipped. Maybe the only improvement could be to add some more hooks on the wall and some hangers for clothes, because there is no closet or other wardrobe, that could be helpful. We had a great time on the lake, very happy with our stay. Also very good communication with the owner.

lake Bomoseen cottage stay in Hubbardton June 2024

Overall, it was a lovely experience. The cottage was very clean and well appointed. Location was private and quiet, with just one neighboring house in sight and that was unoccupied during our stay. Far enough from the road so any road noise was nearly nonexistent. Wildlife was mostly avian, a great blue heron and some kind of large hawk making frequent appearances. I'm no ornithologist, but I may have sighted an eagle as well. The property manager was pleasant and responsive to our inquiries

Lakeside Heaven

The minute we walked into the property, it revealed itself to be everything that the photos and narrative promised. Steps onto the enclosed porch that faces the lake with the most amazing breeze coming through, almost made me break into tears. It’s what I’ve been looking for, and have been often disappointed by other rentals. The owners were responsive and available, it was close to so many wonderful places. We’ve been to many large cities in Vermont, but it was a joy to visit so many small towns and really get that Vermont vibe . I hate to say that it was wonderful because I don’t want it to become so popular that we can’t get an opportunity to revisit, but if you’re looking for peace and quiet, and a star filled sky at night time, this is the place for you.

Cozy and tucked away

Exactly what we were looking for! Cozy place, off the road and on the water. Sunset views is the highlight but perfect amount of space and amenities for 2 and launching our paddle board from the dock made for an amazing weekend. Our kitties in particular loved the screened in porch! Would definitely stay again!

Quiet time on waterfront

We were looking to spend several days in a peaceful, quiet location on a waterfront, and we got exactly what we wanted. It was mid-May, and we never heard or saw another person or motorboat. The screened porch is excellent for reading and listening to birds and frogs. The cottage is also well equipped with kitchen supplies.

Hidden Treasure!

Our stay was absolutely amazing! If you're looking for a peaceful place to relax & unwind, Sunset Cottage is an excellent choice. The cottage is at the end of a long driveway, nestled on a very tranquil section of Lake Bomoseen. The screened porch offers a mesmerizing view with front row seating to a wide variety of waterfowl. The cottage is inviting with heartwarming personal touches, the kitchen is well equipped. Board games, puzzles, books and DVDs are available in case of rain. There is plenty of hot water, a mini-split provides heat or AC in abundance, we slept very soundly in comfortable beds, enjoyed cooking on the grill & roasting marshmallows over a camp fire. Cell service is spotty however the wifi worked great to check the weather & email... if you need to be constantly connected to update social media, play online video games, or can't completely get away from work -this might not be ideal for you. If you truly wish to "unplug" and enjoy the serenity, you will be amazed at how refreshed you feel. Our check-in/check-out was contactless however the Hosts are dedicated to providing you with an exceptional stay. Our only need to reach out was to let them know how truly grateful we are to have had the opportunity to enjoy this hidden treasure!! I can't think of one thing that was anything less than perfect, we are looking forward to many return visits!!!

Great place

We really enjoyed our stay. It’s very quiet and peaceful. You don’t hear road traffic or people. I was impressed with how clean the house was. It is also well stocked with just about everything you could need, except an iron which I really needed. The water is great for dogs but definitely not for people. My only caution to others who may bring their dog is that the neighbors 2 dogs will come onto the property barking incessantly so if your dog is not dog friendly beware! We were told the neighbors have dogs but we were not expecting them to come onto the property alone and unsupervised. Luckily we avoided any troubles and kept our dog under control. This happened daily. This is no fault of the property owner so I still give 5 stars even though it added a little stress to an otherwise very peaceful stay. I still highly recommend.

Hubbarton cabin

The cabin was clean but the lighting was insufficient. We actually put a larger bulb in a lamp so I could read. There is no lighting over the table and no lighting over the outside stairs. There is a motion light outside but it did not work correctly and only stayed in a few seconds. It also lacked any drawers or cabinets to store anything for the week. I would not ever return.

Sunset Cottage was purchased in October, 2017 by my parents. My husband and I added a daughter to our family in September, 2017 and it was time for the Grandparents to have a local place to stay when they visit! We have since added a son and are currently expecting our third child. My husband, kids, jack russell terrier and I live 40 minutes from Sunset Cottage and will be serving as property managers for our guests.

Originally from Massachusetts, I moved to Vermont when I met my now husband in 2012. We are excited about this new adventure and sharing our family's cottage with guests. We enjoy spending time with our family at the cottage as well!

Why they chose this property

My parents had been looking for a small vacation home/rental property in Vermont. The search became more real when we told them they were expecting their first grandchild! They wanted a place that was quiet, serene, peaceful and had a beautiful water view. They looked at many places that offered lake access, but they were waiting for the perfect, quaint little cottage that was truly waterfront. After months of being on the lookout this property came up and they fell in love the first time they visited!

What makes this property unique

Lake Bomoseen is the largest lake in Vermont that is completely contained within the state's boarders. It is approximately 9 miles long and has a lot to offer! Sunset cottage is on the very north end of the lake which is very quiet with very little traffic. The main body of the lake is perfect for swimming, boating and fishing. This spot is unique because you would never know it is on such a large lake! There are only a few houses on this area of the lake and none on the opposite shore, so you are looking at mountains and not houses! Enjoy this peaceful setting!
