Welcome to The Ilio Hale!

Our spacious, fully furnished, family friendly retreat is located within the prestigious gated subdivision of Kahakai Estates in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, Hawaii. The historic Great Wall of Kuakini runs along the back of the property, while a natural wildlife reserve attracts exotic birds in front - directly across the street. This 3 bedroom 2.5 bathroom home is situated on a half acre of manicured land, boasts breathtaking ocean and sunset views throughout the neighborhood, and offers luxurious living while providing all of the conveniences of home.

Your comfort is important! Ilio Hale keeps you cool with Central Air throughout... An open floor plan and natural lighting creates a nice flow through the living room, kitchen, and dining area. The master bedroom flaunts garden views, a cozy cal-king bed, Cable TV/DVD and his-and-her vanity sinks with a soaking tub/stand alone shower in the attached master bathroom. While the two other guest rooms are equipped with comfortable queen and full-sized beds, an additional queen sized air mattress is provided in the den/office to accommodate larger parties.

Outdoors, the lanai (patio) is furnished with table/seating and gas barbecue. A large gated driveway extends beyond the length of the home providing ample parking and allowing for easy loading/unloading. Two kayaks, a bike, boogie boards and other extras are available for your use throughout your stay. Ocean access is within walking distance and it's a short 2 minute drive to the heart of this beautiful town.

Your enjoyment is our priority! As such, we are available to address any questions or concerns throughout your stay. In addition to our responsive property manager, we've also procured an Expedia Local Expert to assist in the planning of your trip should you choose to utilize such service. What is the time difference from the continental US? Hawaii follows Hawaii Standard Time (GMT-10 hours), which is five hours behind Eastern Standard Time and two hours behind Pacific Standard Time. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings Time, so add one extra hour to the time difference during this period (March through November).

How far is it from Kona International Airport (KOA) to:

Do I need a car to get around the island of Hawaii? We recommend a rental car for flexibility and ease, and we strongly suggest booking before you arrive. All the major rental companies are found on the island of Hawaii. There are also guided and custom tours of every type from bus tours and taxis to private limos.


What should I pack on my trip around the island of Hawaii? Pack a light, waterproof jacket for hiking or exploring the tropical rainforests of Hilo and the Hamakua Coast and warmer clothes if you plan to visit the uplands of Waimea and the higher elevations of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. A beach bag containing sunscreen, towels, and swim attire is a useful resource to keep handy at all times. Also bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

How do I see the top sites in my allotted time frame? If you have at least five days we suggest breaking your “drive days” into three separate days with beach days or local sightseeing days in between. For example: Drive Day 1 - make Volcano National Park your destination by way of hwy 11 to the south & stop at all the additional attractions (coffee farms, shops, bakeries, black sand beach, etc) on your way there or on the way back. Drive Day 2 - make Hilo your destination by way of hwy 19 to the north & stop at all the additional attractions (Waimea, Waipio Overlook, Akaka Falls, Botanical Gardens, etc) on your way there and take Saddle Rd. home if you plan on Mauna Kea visitor center by nightfall. Drive Day 3 - make Pololu Valley Lookout your destination by way of hwy 270 up north. Check out attractions along the way & Hawi Artist Village. Return along hwy 250 for elevated views of the beautiful west coast. This is the shortest of the 3 drive days and a nice way to spend your last day to make the most of time between check-out and a late flight.

Family trip

The property had a great location and layout, perfect for our group of seven. The owner was very responsive and quickly addressed issues during our stay, such as the washer breaking and drains not draining, which we really appreciated.However, the kitchen isn’t ideal for cooking. While it had some basic tools, the quality was lacking—honestly, a quick trip to the dollar store would have been an upgrade. There were plenty of knives, but none of them were sharp, and the cookware was very minimal. For example, there were no cookie sheets or any pans larger than an 8x8 dish.As for beach gear, there were a couple of beach chairs and a few old mismatched snorkel masks scattered around the property, but not much else to fully support a beach day.

Our family of 5 stayed for 3 nights at the start of our Big Island trip. The home is as advertised and had plenty of space for our family. Our kids loved the hammock in the front yard, we all enjoyed walking the neighborhood, and we prepared several meals at the home. It is a short driving distance to grocery stores, the main Kailua-Kona waterfront, and other attractions in the area.

Needs a little tlc

The house is big, and nice. But it definitely needs a little TLC. Out of the 3 Beach chairs 1 was broken. There were no beach towels available. The hot water leaves a lot to be desired, I don't think any of us ever got a HOT shower! The back patio was dirty, could've at least swept it! No baking pans, only pots and pans. Again, it's a nice property, just needs a little attention. Nothing that would stop me from booking again.

Kona Vacation

We stayed here a month, three of us the whole time. We had other family members join us at different times. Leland was very quick to get back to us about any inquiries. The house was a bit under stocked for a month but it is well stocked now as we added a lot of things to keep our life comfortable and easy while here.

This property is perfect for anyone wanting that at home experience. The house is well maintained, clean and gives you the feeling of being at home. Being in a gated community makes you feel safe. This home is great . Gated community, quiet, also very close to shopping and most activities.Maggie, our host waited on us even though we were 2.5 hour late. She went over all aspects of the home. Maggie was gracious enough to allow us a late check out that was much appreciated. The home is as shown in all the pictures. We would come back here on our next trip if available. Great house. I was here for work, so didn't get to take advantage of all the house has to offer, but it is as advertised. Beds are really comfortable, everything clean. Our flight was late arriving in the evening and Maggie the property manager waited for us which was very kind. Would highly recommend this property.

Great property to stay when visiting the big island. Beautifully maintained. Stayed over the holidays with a family of 5 and everyone loved the home, the rooms were spacious, the backyard, ocean view and front yard was beautiful. Thanks for making our stay in Kona so comfortable! It was truly home away from home. The hosts were fantastic and were very responsive to any requests made during our stay. They were very thoughtful and greeted our family with a wonderful gift basket. Administrative and logistical details were well outlined in an information binder which made our stay very easy. The house itself is in a very safe and gated community with amazing sunset views around the neighbourhood. Its conveniently located to many tourist attractions including downtown Kona, beaches, coffee farms and the airport. The house is fantastic for large families with its large living room and dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped along with a fantastic barbecue in the back patio. Rooms were very clean and spacious with sufficient storage room for clothes. Beds were very comfortable and the hosts provided brand new linens. Bathrooms were also very clean and towels were provided. The hammock in the front yard is awesome for relaxing in while the back yard is big enough to throw around a frisbee! Would highly recommend for families and/or groups of friends to rent this property while in Kona! Overall it was a neat experience to have stayed in the ilio hale (Hawaiian for “doghouse” - ps. You’ll know what this means when you get there!!). Our family would not hesitate to stay at the ilio hale for our next trip back to Kona. Thanks again for making us feel at home! It made us want to stay in Kona longer!
