About this property

Waterfront Maine Island Cottage, Brand New Post and Beam!

This gorgeous, brand new, waterfront Post & Beam cottage is located on a tidal cove. This location is unique in that you have lots of privacy, it is across the cove from a nature preserve & down a quiet wooded lane. It is also unique in that it is only an 5 minute drive to town. Very few locations on Vinalhaven have this unique combination of advantages.

You will enjoy beautiful sunrises, & sunsets reflect in the cove! Tidal coves are mud flats at low tide, which is great for bird watching! The hummingbirds will fly right next to you when you are sitting on the deck. Hummingbird and bird feeders are provided. as well as binoculars for a closer look. At high tide the water is over your head & the mud warms up the water so it is possible to go swimming when the tide is right. If you have a kayak or canoe we have a natural stone area for launching your boat into the cove.

The grounds have spectacular with extensive gardens! The cottage is build on the site of a former saw mill, & the flywheel from the old saw mill sits as a giant sculpture in the Daylily beds.

Inside the house is an open living room/ dining/kitchen area, with large windows facing the water & the daylily gardens. A herb garden is available for you. The bedrooms and kitchen...You supply bed linens and towels except when you might be flying into Maine from another state.

At high tide you almost feel as if you are in a boat the camp is so close to the water (only 10 feet from the high tide mark!). Although the cottage is new it is built on the site of an earlier camp that was very close to the water, which 'grandfathered' the location, building a house this close to the water is no longer possible.

The kitchen has granite counter tops, stainless steel appliances, cherry cabinets & a tile floor. The rest of the living area & the bedrooms have red birch floors. The bath has a granite vanity, a full tub/shower, & there are lobster and crab tiles embedded in the shower walls.

Visit Island Spirits offers fine affordable wines and wine tastings, homemade breads, cheeses, & pates. The New Era Gallery has the finest in local paintings, sculpture, photography, prints, pottery, weaving, with openings every 3 weeks, seasonally. Go Fish! has penny candy & toys for the kids, Second Hand Prose has used books, & there's a video store & a beauty parlor, too! Eat at Donna's Surfside for breakfast, Dot and Millie's for dinner. There is a large grocery & liquor store, a post office, a library, & don't forget the Fisherman's Friend & Everything Country! There are yoga studios.
Saturday mornings there's a flea market which is a local summer highlight and a great place to socialize. Enjoy fresh squeezed lemonade, homemade pies, jams, fresh berries, produce & flowers. Knitted hats, jewelry, wood crafts, rugs, pottery, arts and crafts, watercolors, photography, netted handbags, t-shirts, an assortment of this and that, & just plain good old used stuff!
Kayaking tours are also available on the island, as well as swimming and sailing classes for the kids. The Vinalhaven Land Trust has numerous walks on a weekly basis.
There is a golf course on nearby North Haven Island if you want to bring you clubs. Life it good!!!

A Perfect Week

Perfection. We enjoyed every minute. Kayak paddles, quality deck time, squirrels, hummingbirds, seals, eagles, butterflies, birds of all kinds, flowers … flowers and more flowers! Clean, cozy, easy. Joel and Julie were very helpful with information and directions prior to arrival and during our stay. Thank you for a memorable week.

Outstanding accommodations, super nice people. Will be back!

We spent a week here, it was a fabulous experience. The house is extremely well designed and maintained -- everything we needed for a great stay was there. The full kitchen with all the accessories and large dining table made it easy to feed ourselves. The sofa, easy chair and beds are super comfy and the big-screen TV and ample internet WIFI meant that we didn't lack for entertainment and connectivity. Finally, the view from the house is spectacular, it sits on a rocky shore -- you feel like you're the only one there. The house is well located, with easy access to the paved main road that takes you quickly to any point on the island. In short, we had a great stressless time and hope to return again next year!

The ideal vacation cottage!

My wife and I spent two glorious weeks in Joel's cottage at the end of the summer season. The location of the cottage at the edge of Vinal Cove was ideal, with views over the water, boulders and the unspoiled shoreline across the cove. The location was also perfect for our bike rides into town, to the quarry to swim, and for rides to the many "preserves" and natural areas for our daily hikes. It was so peaceful, tranquil, and quiet which made for a very relaxing time and some wonderful sleep. The cottage is beautifully designed and constructed and was just right for the two of us. We appreciated that Joel was happy to give us advice when we had questions or could provide some history and lore of the area.

A Bit of Paradise

This was our first trip to Vinalhaven and we certainly lucked out with this property! The cottage is located close to water's edge, with an unobstructed view of Vinal Cove. The owners, Joel and Julie, who spend summers in the main house, take obvious pride in their property. The gardens are spectacular and hummingbirds abound. They were so accommodating and even invited us to a party at their house. At the same time, they respected our privacy. We cannot wait to return to the island and the cottage!

A most special spot and seriously considerate hosts!

Joel’s cottage was everything we hoped it would be and more. We were looking for a view of the water and were treated to a week of gorgeous sunrises over an already stunning view. We wanted outdoor adventure AND the creature comforts of home — the location, property, and hosts did not disappoint. The beautiful gardens and bird feeders attract so many types of birds that there’s always something interesting to watch. Joel and Julie are kind and considerate hosts, and we’re so grateful to them for sharing their home with us.

Lovely spot, wonderful house and lovely hosts

Basically all the previous reviews are spot on—one of my favorite parts of the island (after 20 + years’ experience) and a perfect cottage to boot. One of the more impeccably clean and maintained rentals I’ve ever seen. Perfectly equipped, and the spot can’t be beat. Mudflats for birdwatching and serenity, when tide up fantastic kayaking out into Winter harbor. Granite rocks to watch the sunset from, and a host pair who are delightful. Oh, and fresh herbs in the garden:). This is perfect.

a wonderful place

Joel and Julie were wonderful hosts. Julie even baked us cookies and put a nice bouquet of flower to the living room. The house has a picturesque location at a pristine bay. Sunrise is right across the bay and fills up the house. We enjoyed watching the tides coming and going and the seabirds from the porch. The house is fully equipped and comfortable. A perfect place to unwinde.

Great Getaway

The cottage is on a beautiful property and offers incredible views. The gardens and ease of putting in kayaks were real plusses. Owner was easily accessible and easy to communicate with, and offered little perks like a fresh flower bouquet, handmade soap in the bath, and help with ferry reservations. Overall, wehad a great getaway

WONDERFUL!

This is a beautiful cottage in a spectacular location on the island. It's right on the water with beautiful gardens. The home itself is fantastic - gorgeous inside and out. Nice furnishings and all that's needed for cooking. The hosts are lovely - very friendly but also give plenty of privacy. We were traveling with two children and they enjoyed the rocks and shore and kayaking. The deck is perfect for coffee and reading as well as dinner. HIGHLY recommend.

A magical place!

The setting of this property is magical! It is right on a tidal cove with seals, bald eagles and other birds everywhere. The house itself is beautifully decorated with a great kitchen and full of light. The deck is a wonderful place to sit or eat. There are 3 kayaks and we used them a lot. Joel and Julie are perfect hosts, helpful in every way with flowers and blueberry muffins as a welcome. Who could ask fir more!

This was one of the most beautiful, peaceful, quiet places we have ever been. Short hikes that are close by offer stunning views, a kayak is available, and one can spend hours watching the birds and the water from the deck. Terrific week in Vinalhaven

Vinalhaven is a wonderful setting...an island off the coast of Maine reachable only be a 75 minute ferry ride. Joel and Julie’s waterfront cottage is well appointed, clean and comfortable. They made sure we were comfortable and secure but were totally non intrusive. We enjoyed bike riding around the island as well as participating in activities of this very welcoming community. A great place to spend a week ( or longer).

It’s a Magical place!

This was easily the best HomeAway experience we’ve ever had (and we’ve had some other really great ones)! Joel and Julie made it feel almost like a Bed and Breakfast with all the personal attention they gave (always available to help or give recommendations, but respectful of our privacy to enjoy our family vacation) and the care with which they manage the property...Julie planted a fresh herb garden for us while we were there, for heaven’s sake!!! This is a meticulously maintained, comfortable cottage with a well-equipped kitchen, STUNNING views, and an absolute feeling of serenity - all day, every day. We spent hours just relaxing on the deck - watching Bald Eagles soaring, Blue Herons fishing, Osprey diving, fish jumping, Hummingbirds hovering, and Red Squirrels frolicking. The kayaks, hiking trails, swimming holes at the quarries, and fantastic restaurants were a pleasure as well. Vinalhaven is a treasure. Just make sure you understand what you need to do to get your reservations for the ferry if you’re bringing your vehicle. It can be VERY tricky to manage, but Joel can help you figure it out, and it is DEFINITELY worth the trouble!

20 stars out of 10- spectacular

We arrived to a beautiful cottage on the water's edge and as can happen socked in by grey skies. Did that matter? NO! the living area was comfortably furnished with a wall of windows overlooking Vinal Cove and it felt like the outside was inside. We were treated to constantly changing landscape and the ebb and flow of the tides. Joel and Julia were such wonderful and helpful "landlords" in our case going above and beyond the call of duty ie changing a flat tire on my car. Joel a avid gardner was often busy planting for next year so I am sure his garden will be a further delight to renters. The house was clean and inviting with a deck which we might have put to use if the weather had been more obliging. Joel is a talented photographer and such an interesting person. Check out his photography page. All in all our hosts and their cottage get a 20 star rating.

The perfect getaway

We had no idea what to expect other than serenity and peace. What we found was community. Joel's cottage is picture perfect in every way. Great location not too far from town, beautiful sunrises, lovely tidal changes, stunning colors at sunset. Well appointed kitchen, with everything needed to make the cottage your own. The living room has fantastic light and great breezes due to the abundance of windows. The beds are comfy. The gardens are beautiful. Kayaks are convenient and a fun way to explore. We in turned loved everything about Vinalhaven. Some restaurants and businesses were closed for part of the week as the proprietors had to take a breather after a busy summer. No matter. I can't say enough about how kind the business owners are, and how much fun we had tasting the local fare, especially the fresh lobster, which we both cooked at home and had at the restaurants. As for the host, well Joel is just incredible. We were fortunate enough to meet him and some of his friends (his home is next door). Their hospitality was unbelievable, and honestly we wished we had more time with Joel (and Julie). We enjoyed reading The Wind (the local paper) as well as a few of the local books Joel had at the cottage (Away Happens is hilarious). One really got a sense of the history and the island's uniqueness, and appreciate the hardworking lobstermen and their families.

Wonderful cottage in a serene location!

If you're looking for a lovely cottage with a beautiful view of the tidal cove, this is the place to be. Peaceful is the single word description. Joel and Julie live in the cottage next door and are available for questions but are mindful of guests' privacy. The cottage is well supplied with dishes, cookware and small appliances for those who enjoy cooking in. The windows facing the cove are awesome and you must catch at least one sunrise. Spectacular site. Joel will guide you with the ferry process but if you've never taken your car over on one, it's a pleasant adventure. The ride to and fro was beautiful. Would recommend this place to anyone wanting to kick back and bike, kayak or read. Thank you Joel and Julie!

Our Summer Getway

This was our 6th year renting from Joel which takes us almost 6 hours to get to but well worth it. He has meticulously maintained the property from rare flowers to the rental itself. The location is private, the view is spectacular which includes daily Bald Eagles across the cove. Downtown is simple (this isn't Cape Cod), but has the just right shops, a few restaurants and grocery store to have what you need. We prefer to cook most of our meals in the well equipped kitchen. The island itself is small, but has many hiking areas. The required ferry ride (if you want to bring a vehicle) takes some coordination, but that is a good thing keeping the wrath of vacationers to a minimum, plus the ride itself is picturesque. The town is so nice in fact, waving to other drivers is what everyone does. There are even quarries to swim in. It's our best kept secret. Joel is an incredible person and talented photographer.

Stunning location -- and pure tranquility!

The cottage & the location are absolutely beautiful -- just as shown in the pictures. Although I've been to Vinalhaven several times over the past several years, this cottage was so comfortable, and in such a lovely, tranquil location, it was an exceptionally relaxing vacation! Joel went out of his way to provide a couple of extras for the very well-stocked kitchen that most places do not have, and he checked in periodically to make sure everything was OK. The beds are very comfortable, the sofa and large armchair in the living room are perfect for looking out of the long row of picture windows along the front of the cottage, and everything is on one floor, which makes for easy access. I would highly recommend this property to anyone who wants to spend time in Maine, looking out over water and surrounded by pine trees, flowers, hummingbirds, seagulls, and more stars than I've seen since in decades. I'll be back next summer!

About the host

Hosted by Joel Greenberg

Host profile image
The house was built 12 year ago. Everything is custom in it as you can see by the photos. It is a unique location being so close to town and yet so private.

Why they chose this property

The first time a rented a house on Vinalhaven I fell in love with it. The beauty of the natural areas and the warmth of the people were so enticing. I have come back year after year to my good fortune.

What makes this property unique

The cottage just 10 feet away from the water. At times you feel like you are a boat house. Once in a while you can see a seal in the cove or bald eagles flying above. I don't rent the house in the winter so it has remained in pristine condition. I have 6 gardens for your enjoyment, with a hugh collection of different colored daylilies and hydrangeas.
