Rio Mar Getaway

What a great location to stay! The proximity to the ocean, golf, the pool, and things to do was fantastic. The place needs some TLC to be certain, but the beauty of the surroundings balanced that out. The accommodations were "sparse." We had to ask for more than one roll of toilet paper, garbage bags, soap, etc. Sheets don't fit the bed and holes in the pillow cases. You spend a lot of time, money, and effort to get there, looking forward to this memorable trip, so you want them to match some effort while you stay there. Our requests were accommodated, but why do I have to ask for salt and pepper or toilet paper?

Not the best 1st VRBO experience

This was my first time staying at a VRBO. I did communicate with the owner a couple times before arriving. He doesn't provide coffee or shampoo/conditioner/body wash at this property. He did have decent directions to get to the unit both if arriving before/after 6 PM but the names of the roads aren't given. He did give a pin drop which was very helpful to get an exact GPS location. We arrived after dark so it was a little confusing once you get on the Wyndham Rio Mar Beach Hotel property especially since some of the roads were blocked/closed because of construction. You don't have access to all of the gates on this property. At first it was frustrating, but then you get the lay of the land. The security guard for the gate by Cluster 2 wasn't there when we arrived, after waiting about 10 mins someone leaving triggered the gate & we were able to get through but weren't able to get the parking pass then. When we got to the unit, the instructions that were sent described where a key would be. There was no key. I called the owner, he did answer & he gave the code for the keyless entry. After arriving we noticed that there were only 2 bath towels & 4 beach towels provided. We were a family of 4 staying 5 nights & planned to go to the pool & beach several times. There were no wash clothes or hand towels either. We also noticed there was less than a 1/4 of a roll of toilet paper & we couldn’t find any more. I messaged the owner the 1st night about both of these issues. The next day he messaged back that he’ll try to get us more towels & will leave them outside in the doorway. This never happened. He never responded back about the TP. We had to go to the bathroom at the pool & take TP from there every night because we quickly ran out. The water in the shower never got very warm & definitely not hot. For our family, the loft worked out pretty well for my 17 year old twin boys. You cannot stand up in the loft. There is a fan up there to help keep it cool. There is a styrofoam cooler in the unit. The next day when we stopped at the Cluster 2 security gate to get our parking pass, they let us know that you can get a free bag of ice every day you are there. It was extremely convenient to have the pool across the street from the unit. They were doing some repairs in the pool area when we were there but you could still use the pool. The windows aren't completely sealed even when locked. When it rains heavily, water comes in. We had water standing on tile floor.

Awesome view and breeze

Over all pretty good place. Great location; so close to the pool. The villa looked nice. The best part was the view for the golf course and the amazing breeze you get when opening the windows. The kitchen was nice and had all the equipment. Only had a few small issues: we did not have water the first night but it wasn’t the host fault it’s was a reparation, there were no trash bags and the second bed “space” was smaller than what we thought (for kids it’s great but for adults you have to crawl basically to get to the bed) Over all is a nice place and the host is very diligent and helpful.

good location and value

This was a perfect place for us. Close to rainforest and ocean and amenities of fancy resort available without price tag attached. We did use resort pools and walked from the condo twice in the evenings. Found the condo to be quiet and comfortable. Kids loved sleeping in loft. Condo pool across parking lot with hot tub was essentially ours compared to busier resort pools. The condo has all the things you need to prepare your own meal and have a comfortable stay. This is a well loved condo with rustic wood cabinets and tile floors, stucco curved staircase entry. Some of surrounding condos show some age and some missing tile on roofs, etc likely from hurricane. Comfortable queen bed in main sleeping area. Only negative would be the AC is mounted right above the bed and is very loud if you are one to require absolute quiet. There is good cross breeze if you don't mind sleeping with windows open instead. Owner very helpful, responsive, and had recommendations for local excursions. Overall a very pleasant stay!

Beautiful studio!

If you dream of the elegance of a Spanish villa, this is the place for you. You may expect a conquistodor to ride up on his horse at any moment. Yet this is a modern studio with a historic flair. The tile work is beautiful, the casement windows open outward to bring you lots of fresh Caribbean breezes. The view is stunning and the music of the critters at night are soothing. Otherwise, it's quiet as can be. Having the beach nearby and multiple swimming pools can't be beat. The studio is clean, compact, and nicely appointed. Richard is very responsive if you have questions. This was a happy place to stay and enjoy Puerto Rico! We'd love to come back some day!

Splendid

Our stay was perfect. The view of the golf course and the mountains was amazing. Everything you need for a get away is available. Nice and clean and quiet. It was more than enough space for the two of us. We were able to use the Wyndham hotel amenities which was a plus. I look forward to book this property for a future stay.

Amazing Stay at the Rio Mar

The villa is located in a gated vacation rental community on the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort. The villa has a studio loft where two individuals can sleep (perfect for older/teenage children), a queen sized bed (very comfortable!), pull out couch, small kitchen and eating area. It has two air conditioning units that work great to keep the villa cool. The windows can also be opened to create a wonderful ocean cross breeze through the unit. The kitchen is fully stocked with pots, pans and utensils that you will require. There are plenty of towels (both bathroom and beach) as well as some beach toys that you can use. As a resident, you have full use of the beach club on the resort. You can walk there (10 minutes) or drive and park in the free parking. The water is beautiful and shallow and the beach is wide, clean and lined with palm trees. There are plenty of beach loungers and a bar on weekends. We took a long walk on the beach and found that you can continue for quite sometime in both directions. There are two pools that you have access to: one right beside the beach and the other right outside the villa doorsteps! Both are well maintained and beautiful. The pools and beach club have very convenient washroom and shower facilities. Also, you have access to the rest of the Wyndham Rio Mar resort. The main resort has several restaurants, bars and a casino. It was a pleasant 20 minute stroll which was particularly nice at night. There is also paid parking at the resort if you prefer to drive. The resort gave excellent nightly entertainment options on those evenings that we didn't have anything planned. Perhaps one of the best features of the resort was its location. It is just across the street from the entrance to the El Yunque Rainforest and Palmer (town with delicious coffee and great art for sale). Since the resort is located just off of Highway 3, it is about 30 minutes to Old San Juan, 30 minutes to Fajardo and the ferries and just 10 minutes to Luquillo and the kiosks (great place for a delicious lunch). Another positive about the villa is how easy it was to communicate with the owner. I had a few questions regarding check in and internet use and the owner was very fast to respond and helpful throughout. There are a few things to consider if you are thinking of renting the villa, however. There are quite a few steps leading into the villa itself so it may be a consideration if you have mobility issues or are travelling with small children.

STAY HERE!

We are glad we booked this villa and wanted to share some experiences we had while in PR Richards directions were great but we used the pin drop he sent more. Check in was easy and guards were very friendly and welcoming. We found the villa easily and it was clean and obvious someone had looked after it because all the towels and sheets were really well turned down and inviting. While the villa is small it was great for our family of 4. One of our kids slept on the mezzanine upstairs while the other slept on the fold out Sofa bed. My wife and myself were happy on the Queen bed. The view from the property was amazing overlooking to golf course and the lakes. Hotel was a 10 minute walk and we enjoyed dinner there a couple of times. Beach club bar open on the weekends and you get a good local turnout at the pool and beach there on weekends. The villa pool was great right next to us and we loved using that first thing in the morning and early evening after the beach. Hotel Pool was great. Walk the 5 minutes down the beach from the beach Club to avoid hotel parking fees or park at hotel and get parking ticket stamped from the Casino...good advise Richard! All in all a great place to stay...we were on a budget and this suit us just right.

Awesome Resort..Better Villa!

We just got back from staying in Puerto Rico and had an amazing time. While the resort is great the villa was even better. The value was amazing for what it was. Watch out for Richies cafe the local restaurant...very pricey. You must eat local food. amazing. Villla was comfortable for our needs and we loved the wooden finishings and the furniture. Amazing view of the golf course from the villa and great natural AC when you opened up the windows. Richard was easy to get in touch with....he works at the Ritz Carlton in Dorado so seemed to be in tune with all the tours and things to do in the area. Great help...Thank you!| Park at the beach club pool (5 mins awl or 1 minute drive) for free and avoid the hotel parking fees. Hotel was a 5 minute walk from the parking. Pool next to the villa was a godsend. All in all an amazing vacation...We already worked out our repeat visitor discount!

Puerto Rico-Our new favorite

Its true that Richard has some bad reviews but we liked his responses and when we spoke to him he seemed like a nice guy out to please. We were right. We found the property after following Richard directions -he even sent a pin drop to our iPhone for google maps. We found the place to be clean and comfortable. Kitchen was well stocked with utensils etc. First day was exploring day. We learnt that if we go to the casino we can get our parking ticket stamped and park for free at the hotel. Hotel amenities were easy to use...Pool towel service is for hotel guests only but we just took our own. Beach and pool at hotel were quite busy so we preferred the pool at the villa and also the members and guests pool at the beach club. The beach club was a 5 minute walk but we drove it every time as the parking was free and the drive was super easy. We ate Mofongo at Richies cafe ( 1minute drive) and went to El Yunque which is just a 10 minute drive. Loved all the local attractions including the Kioskas which is just 5 mins drive away but has 50 bars and restaurants to choose from...Go to #2...L Parilla...amazing!

We'll be back!

Let me start by saying that it was the best value we found in the area. We also saw some of the other villas our friends were renting and Richards was really well furnished and in good condition in comparison. The upstairs loft was fun for the kids-perfect for an adventure with its low ceiling. The queen bed was great for me and my wife and we opened the blinds every morning and saw the sunrise right from the bed. The view from the bed is amazing overlooking the golf course. We opened up the french windows and let the Caribbean Breeze blow through the villa while we were there but don't get caught out by leaving them open if you go out! The rainstorms can be brutal! Kitchen was well equipped and size wise it was all we needed. There is a pool steps away and another 5 minutes walk to the beach. The hotel was 10 minutes walk and we used their pool all the time. Just don't try to use the hotel pool towels! Hotel pool towels, we found out are for hotel guests only.

Guest BEWARE!!

Regarding Rio Mar: Let me begin by saying it is a nice place to rent Villas !! Except the villa my family and I choose to rent from this owner. The day of our arrival security was unaware of any guest renting the villa. The owner failed to inform them of any guest arriving this day. After several attempts trying to contact owner requesting keys, we finally enter the studio villa. To our surprise once we entered the unit we noticed dirty dishes in the sink, trash overflowing in garbage pail in kitchen and the beds unmade. Dirty towels were left all over the bathroom floor also. Let's not forget how nasty the floors were and the smell of urine. We tried contacting owner because we very disappointed with the villa and refused to stay in a studio so disgusting and unkept . We asked the owner for a refund and he refused. After several attempts trying to settle with owner nothing good came about, therefore we had to find somewhere else to stay for our vacation. While searching the web that night we noticed that the owner removed his add for the villa that same day. We noticed that he just reposted his add on August 25, 2014, approximately two weeks after our vacation. In all the years I've traveled with my family, I've never encountered such a horrible experience. What the owner sold us online and the photos posted are totally deceiving. Worst vacation home ever. GUEST BEWARE!!!!!! Formal Complaints are in the works with VBRO and Home Away!!!!!!!!

Excellent villa in a great location!

My husband and I just got back from one week of renting Richard's villa on the golf course at Rio Mar. It was perfect for our needs and we would definitely recommend it for anyone who either wants an alternative to staying at the Wyndham hotel, or would just like to be in a beautiful location to visit the various sites in the area. The windows open onto the golf course on one side with a spectacular view, and the pool/street on the other side. The gentle breeze that flows across the bed as you are sleeping gives the impression of being outside 24/7 and the birds....they are like a beautiful symphony! We had a conference to attend at the Wyndham Rio Mar hotel for 3 days and the villa was very convenient as guests at the villa are permitted to use all the hotel facilities (take towels from the villa). We would drive down to the waterfront pool, parking lot there for the day, and walk the five minutes along the beach to the hotel to attend the conference. The parking fees at the hotel are very pricey and we were thrilled to be able to spend that money saved on more important things! We ate breakfast at Antojito's near Hwy 3, lunch at Richie's (spectacular view) up the hill from the villa, and lunch and dinner in the same day at Boardriders (awesome build your own tacos) at Luquillo Beach (across street from the water, great way to spend the day watching the surfers). The conference took us to the Hacienda Siesta Alegre, up in the rainforest (where it rained right through the roof!), which was super beautiful! We ate at El Jefe Hamburgers at the Kioskes. Spent a day in Old San Juan and ate at the Cafe la Princesca, another great place with atmosphere and great food. El Yunque rainforest is 10 minutes away, Fajardo was about 20-25 minutes. We flew to Culebra for the day....Flamenco Beach was our favorite. We thoroughly enjoyed Luquillo Beach which is also just a 10-15 minute drive. It was wonderful to come back to the villa, open all the windows and enjoy the last portion of our day listening to the birds and sipping a glass of wine. If you need air conditioning, there are two, but they are noisy. We used them for a time and then turned them off and opened the windows. Yes, it was hot but that's what we were there for....a break from a very cold, long winter in Canada! The photos are exactly reflective of the villa...small but clean and provided all the necessary amenities for a great week in PR. Thank you!

Know what you are getting into

I was pretty worried going in on this rental. Only recent positive reviews are "owner entered" and there are a number of negative reviews. The lack of recent VRBO reviews made me worried, but I took a chance. Glad I did. Read the reviews carefully to understand what you are getting. In terms of the loft area, you crawl into bed. Really not a problem and kids love it. As for the main floor, the bed is actually a full, not a queen as claimed. The beach pool area described as a "five minute walk" is a little over a half mile away (0.62). The hotel pool and amenities are a 15 minute walk down the beach once you get to the beach pool area. Note that you will not have towel privileges at the hotel. I spoke with the two different managers on two different days and both indicated towels are only for hotel guests, not condo owners. Hotel guests get a "towel card" and the towels are strictly checked out/checked in, so you will not be able to get one. Make sure to take a towel with you. OTOH, the cluster pool is literally across the street, steps away. The architecture of the villa cluster is very cool. The buildings are set into the hillside and have a Spanish theme with tile roofs, white washed walls, and awnings. You enter this unit through stairs in a turret. Excellent tiling and materials. The unit is very centrally located to the rain forest, horseback riding (there is a place just down the street which combines ride through dense forest with a ride on the beach), zip lining and restaurants. Definitely recommend Antojitos, but Richies Cafe, not so much (great view, but touristy and overpriced). About four traffic lights toward Luquillo you will find 65 "Kiosks" which are small restaurants in a strip where the locals go. Amazing local food, amazingly cheap. The reviews for this villa and Richard's other unit say he is hard to get in touch with. I think that's a fair comment, although he clearly has regular job. It is not a problem as ultimately any concern is addressed. There is not the friendly "I want you to have a good time and will help" vibe that you get most VRBO owners -- it is more like renting from a company, not that there is anything wrong with that. The criticisms from both units regarding the directions are also fair, but you'll find it eventually. Overall, there is a bit of hype to the description, but if you read carefully and know what you are getting, then you will be most satisfied. Recommended!

Great location and perfect for us!

My best friend and I came to the Rio Mar for a conference and wanted to stay in the villas instead of the hotel. Since there were only two of us this was great! I am only 5'3 so I chose to stay in the small loft while Matt slept downstairs . The loft was def on the short side but as I only slept upstairs I had no issues! There was an ac and multiple fans- but we chose to keep the windows open most of the time and it was great. The pool is right outside, the beach was super close... the hotel we had to pay parking so you may want to check into a golf cart if you are spending a lot of time on site. We traveled a lot through the week so got a rental car. Richard was great about getting back to me and everything was as expected! Considering the price compared to other options- this was perfect for our stay and if we make it back I would certainly stay here again!

BEWARE!

Pictures are deceiving and owner is difficult to reach!!!! Do not expect a clean place or air conditioning to work! The loft is TINY, you actually have to crawl in it!! As a native puerto rican I was embarrassed and disappointed! I've used VRBO all over the world and never experienced this unprofessional service!

Awsome Villa!!

In a word -Awesome!! I stayed at this villa with my wife for 5 days to celebrate our aniversary. This villa has a beautiful view of the Golf course and mountains. It is very comfortable and is perfectly located right next to the pool with a nice easy walk to the beach and members beach pool club. We opened up the windows and had the cool Caribbean breeze blowing through the villa while we were there and then at night we only neede 1 of the 2 AC units that the villa has. My wife and I slept on the Queen bed and ejoyed the great breez with the calming soulds of the coqui. There was a nice loft for children or teens. We found everything to be in perfect working condition. Towels, linens and furniture was all in great shape. We especially ejoyed the wi-fi. The villa and its surrounding area has a really nice Mediteranean feel and the grounds are beautiful. The security in this place was outstanding, they were friendly and always made sure the apropriate people were entering the grounds. The owner Richard was very helpful in giving us direction to the Villa. The Rio Mar area is VERY convenient to El Yunque Rainforest as well as all types of activities in the near by town of fajardo. We would highly recommend this villa for couples and small families. We will defenitely be back. Thanks Richard

I came to Puerto Rico from England 14 years ago and fell in love with the island and would love to share Puerto Rico with you.

Why they chose this property

We purchased the property to enable us access to the beach and members pool club area which are idyllic and quintessential caribbean. We used to live nearby on the hillside so to be able to jog down to the beach and pool area in 10 minutes was a real bonus. Now we live in Luquillo (down the beach!). We love our Rio Mar property and we hope to share it with you!

What makes this property unique

This property feels upscale because of the tight security on entrance. On entering the resort and in particular Cluster 2 (where the property is located) the mediterranean (award winning) design of the buildings and lay out of the area sets the scene for a relaxing vacation in beautiful surroundings. Guests always comment on how they love the ambience and setting of the Cluster. What then occurs to you is how close the property is to the pool! (steps!). On entering the villa the spectacular view overlooking the golf course lakes and green tropical beauty is a wow and then you see the hotel and realize how close you are to the beach. Open up those windows and let that warm caribbean prevailing breeze pass through the villa and you have arrived!
