A beautiful spot!

I was looking for a quiet place to destress and this was absolutely perfect! The space was comfortable and had a lanai with a peaceful view of the water. The property is above a beautiful botanical garden which provided a symphony of music from the bird song by day and frogs at night. Gorgeous sunrises and an easy drive into Hilo and great proximity to many beautiful areas along the Hamakua coast.

Tranquil Paradise

Ocean view, tropical setting. Peaceful, yet convenient to Hilo, Volcano and numerous points of interest along the coast or inland. We especially loved drinking coffee or a cold beverage on the lanai listening to birdsongs and ending our days in the very comfortable bedroom.

Private Oasis

What a special place, quiet, private, and surrounded by flora of countless varieties. Sitting on the lanai you can watch the sun rise and watch the whales, all at the same time, perfect! The neighbor hood is very private and quiet. Hilo is just a short easy drive down the road and the botanical gardens an easy walk. If you're staying on the Hilo side of the island, this rental can't be beat! Highly recommended!

Hilo getaway

We stayed for 4 days in Jan. 2025. The space is big, terrific views and location. It was very clean, and comfortable. We cooked a couple of meals in the kitchen, lots of utensils, not much for spices available. Hilo is 10 minute drive, a great day trip to shop and explore. We alos went to the Volcano, and the World Tropical Garden, both worth the cost and effort.

Very nice

This was the second time I stayed there. Loved it both times. Would like to do something similar with my home in Eden Roc. The neighborhood is quiet, green, and beautiful. Easy to fall asleep to the music of the rain and the coquis.

A place to stay in paradise

View the ocean from the back deck is absolutely gorgeous, take a walk out back and look down on the most beautiful place on earth. The botanical gardens are in your backyard and the Flora is absolutely breathtaking. The only 6 miles from the town of Hilo, but a world away from everything else a wonderful place to heal. Would definitely come back in the future to stay again.

JEM OF A PLACE

Location is great, the view is unreal from the balcony. This place is very unique. Everything was very clean when we checked in. It has all the amenities you need to stay. Now there is no AC. But that’s ok you don’t need it. The fan keeps it cool and the door wall and window open is just enough. My husband and I sat outside every night. Loved the sound of the birds. The food on this side of the island is AMAZING. The people are so kind and always willing to answer any questions. Now we are adventurous, so we went all over the place. And stopped at all the local spots to check them out. Thank you for sharing your place with us. Aloha🌺🌴🐚

Perfect Stay

My wife and I along with our 5 year old daughter stayed here for 1 week while we explored the island. This was an excellent location. We felt secluded like we were the only ones on the island. We had an amazing view off the back lanai of the botanical gardens and the ocean in the background. Made friends with the geckos while drinking our morning coffee on the back. I highly recommend this home as we will definitely be back again.

Fantastically Unique

My wife and I started looking on-line for places around Hilo when she calls me over to her computer and says "check this out, it's so unique." I'm thinking "unique" can be either very good or very bad. Well turns out this place was Fantastic for us! We're retired, having lived for over 35 years on remote property in the woods of Oregon, so a quiet place several miles from town sounded spot on.The owners are the best, being both friendly and professional from our first to last contact. The care taker we met was someone we could see ourselves just hanging out with. Everyone just had the "Aloha Spirit." Turning off the highway onto a private road we were impressed by the beautiful homes on large parcels of land. Near the end of the road was our place - a quonset hut. Opening the door it was just as pictured. Super clean and cozy. Nice appliances and comfortable bed. We enjoyed the croaking sounds at night and the birds in the morning. The lanai was wonderful for morning coffee and just hanging out after long days of taking in the sites. Loved Akaka falls and visiting the Botanical Gardens that this property happens to overlook. If we're ever back on the Big Island, this will be the first place we'll look to stay. Mahalo!

Winter getaway

Really enjoyed our stay. The view from the lanai was wonderful. Sunrises were awesome. Joel and Lorna were very responsive to our needs. Aldene is the best caretaker ever. She went above and beyond. Proximity to Hilo was perfect. We would stay here again.

Beautiful location and nicely furnished place

We had a great stay in Hilo. The unit is about 10 minutes outside of Hilo with easy access to downtown and the other attractions. Fully equipped kitchen with washer/dryer. Beautifully furnished. Beautiful grounds nestled above an amazing botanical garden. Will definitely be back!

Great place to stay in the Hilo area

This was a truly amazing place to stay. The bed/bath inside was very nicely designed. The location was perfect. Near total quiet (there were some birds singing outside). Easy access to the highway, and just a few mile drive to Hilo. It was a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. We would definitely like to stay again if/when visiting the Hilo area.

Bliss

This was the best vacation stay I have experienced. The ocean says hello every morning, the wild life performs songs and theatrical movements. It was like watching a movie but you are in it. The caretakers are wonderful and friendly. I can’t wait to return next season

Peaceful and Scenic

We loved our 2 week stay in this unique home. The planning and structure of the building on the beautiful lot was remarkable. The breezes and the views of the ocean and the mountains made the lanai an oasis in itself. It was also a nice location to be near the highway and close to Hilo. The caretakers shared their aloha spirit to make our stay and travels even more wonderful.

We enjoyed our stay at this unique VRBO. We were excited to see the quonset hut converted and we were amazed it was done so well! The place was super clean. I enjoyed cooking with the high quality kitchenware. The deck was awesome being off the big bedroom on the first level - we spent a lot of time out there. We had our breakfast on the deck each morning to watch the beautiful sunrises. It was quiet and relaxing. Bed was comfortable, showers were great - an added bonus to have two bathrooms. We would definitely stay here again.

Nice place in very nice neighborhood

This place looks better in reality than in the listing pictures. It sits just above the botanical garden and is in a really nice, very quiet upscale subdivision. It’s only about 7 min drive from downtown Hilo so it’s really close to everything. The converted hangar is very spacious and had plenty of room for our kid to play. The large bedroom has a king bed and a futon. The large back patio is great to relax at the end of the day. We will definitely stay here again if available…it is a pretty good price for this area of the island.

Beautiful view and very clean

For the money, this property is excellent! Home is in a really nice and quiet neighborhood with a beautiful view of Onomea Bay and overlooks the bioreserve and gardens. There was even an ice chest and beach chairs available to use. The property was clean and the owner was very easy to communicate with through the entire process. My only recommendation is to make sure you bring everything you need in terms of toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, and bath soap) or cooking staples (cooking spray, sugar, salt, pepper, etc.) since those are not provided. Coffee and filters were provided.

Loved the unique qualities of this spacious and well-appointed home

My boyfriend and I enjoyed this spacious and unique building that we called home for 5 days in Hawaii. It's not so off-the-beaten path that we couldn't drive to town for supplies and restaurants, but it was private enough to enjoy our own view of the ocean. The home was very well appointed (nice appliances, comfortable bed, nice linens/towels), organized (easy to find things we needed - beach chairs, laundry amenities, notes where needed), and very clean. We felt 'at home' in the setting and much preferred this over a hotel! Note that with the metal roof, you'll notice noises (e.g. birds, rain) that you normally wouldn't with a conventional roof, but we thought it was charming more than a nuisance. Sleep time was quiet and largely peaceful. A neighbor mentioned the 'back way' to some nice trails up the road and we got some great photos of the ocean near the botanical gardens - it's worth taking a ride because it's so close. Overall, the street is quiet and taking in the ocean view from the back of the home is a highlight! The home's location was just far enough from the airport that we didn't hear the planes but also close enough that it wasn't too long a trek for our early morning flight home. We were the first renters of this property so the only constructive feedback we have is the following: make future renters aware of the exterior surveillance camera (some kind of note would suffice), leave the wifi password in clear view, and make sure the hot water heater is turned on before renters arrival :-) Thank you for having us and for the lovely gift of chocolates! Mahalo!

What are you waiting for?

Our first vrbo and we were real nervous because there were no reviews.....but all for naught! Great place to stay! (Just bring your own salt! lol) Clean? Check. Safe neighborhood? Check. (The neighbors dog is very friendly.) Quite? Check. (The friendly dog will bark occasionally though. lol) Great location? Check. (Easy access to Hilo....and everywhere else!) Great view? Check. (Although it looks like the neighbor towards the sea might obstruct the view sometime soon.) Room for activities? You bet! (I wish I could have parked inside, that would have been fun!) How's the shower? Terrific!!! (Terrific!!!) Geckos? Yeah a few. (But they eat bugs so I didn't care. lol) Wifi? Worked great. (Once we got the password figured out. lol) Owner/manager? Responsive. (Not intrusive.) Value? Worth it! (You can spend way more on the Big Island and get way less! We should know, this is our third rental on the island.) This place made us very happy. So you better book it soon. (Before the upstairs gets finished and they start charging double!) **(My only real gripe is there was absolutely NO seasonings in the entire kitchen, other than pepper. lol. No salt, no sugar, no olive oil, no soy sauce, no flour, no condiments, no nothing. Other than pepper. But like I said, it was just a gripe. lol.)

About the host

Hosted by Lorna Groth

Host profile image
I was born and raised on the Big Island and met my husband while he was building the Mauna Kea Cal Tech Observatory. When his job came to an end we went to the Mainland but this home will always have a special place in our hearts.

Why they chose this property

We love this property because it feels private and yet it is still close to Hilo Town. It's just a short ride away to the farmers market, shopping, golfing, and beaches. We love to sit out on the lanai and look out over Hilo Bay and watch the cruise ships come and go. It truly is our little peace of paradise.

What makes this property unique

Just one look and you can tell that the house itself is a unique benefit. It is so peaceful to sit on the lanai and listen to the wind blow through the palm trees while looking out over the ocean. You can also see Onamea Bay off to the right. You can even hear the whales thumping their tails when they come in the winter and early spring.
