Oceanview

My friend and I road tripped from Ontario down to Newfoundland and stayed in this beautiful home. Very well kept, beautifully decorated and the best part was the view. There were times we'd walk over and sit by the boats and watch the sunset. Some nights you can hear whales passing by. We were very happy with our stay.

A Gem of a Rental!

We were visiting for a family reunion and found this cottage for our week. We were surprised at first on the long drive (30min) back from the main road but then pulled into Southport and realized we made the best choice! The drive had specular views and lots of places to stop including rock beaches where my son “hand fished” for Caplin. Southport is a great little fishing town too. The cottage is located right in the community with amazing views of the docks and ocean from the front porch. We spent most nights out there after the kids went to bed. The cottage was in great shape and very clean. It was stocked with games, movies and puzzles; all used by our family. Our host recommended Little Hearts Ease Beach Trail and it quickly became our favourite hiking spot nearby. We would highly recommend this place to stay. Great communication too between us and our host! Thanks again for the great accommodations.

Lovely tranquil village

The place is a lovely house in a beautiful fishing village. It's a great place for "getting away from it all" and seeing the beauty of Newfoundland. I took so many pictures of Southport because it looked gorgeous under different weather and lighting situations (especially sunset). Heart's Ease Beach is a lovely hike (well maintained, moderate difficulty). There are no services in the village and limited services between there and Clarenville (though there is a little shop with essentials a few minutes away). The house is nicely decorated with Newfoundland art and memorabilia, giving it some character above some of the other rentals I've seen in the province.

Perfect place to experience true Newfoundland beauty, quiet, and welcoming neighbors!

Southport cottage is a comfortable modern, fully-equipped home sitting on the hillside above the harbor. You can spend days just sitting on the covered porch watching - and listening - for whales, or go exploring on foot to bluffs (where you could fly a kite if it wasn’t too windy) or a lovely cobble beach. Everyone in this traditional community welcomed us and gave us tips on where to explore. We kayaked in the fog with whales gently breathing around us, saw a fox and eagles on the shore, had sunny hot days too (and some rain which we used to explore quite far by car)! It’s a half hour from the trans Canada highway which makes it lovely and remote without being inaccessible. The owner was easy to work with and helpful in every way. We’ll be back!

Loved it!!!!

We’re from Alberta, seniors and of course have visited the Pacific Coast numerous times. We have wanted to visit NFLD forever. My husband visited St Johns about 5 years ago and we also have friends there. We finally decided enough, we’re both going! We COULD NOT have found a nicer place to stay with our little yorkie in tow. We were a bit lost when we first got there. (We drove from St Johns which is not a long drive at all). We flagged down a fellow that we came to know as Bruce. He knew exactly where we were staying and had us follow him on his quad just up the road to our place. We drove right by it 🙄. He then asked us if we liked fish and….of course…we’re in a fishing village lol. He told us he had just caught some Cod that day and he would be right back with some. Sure enough he was back in 5 min and it was excellent for our first meal in a lovely little place. A few days later he stopped by with some raspberries he had picked that day. The next door neighbours were also just fantastic! Albert and Bernice. Albert took us along with Bernice on his boat a gave us a wonderful tour. It’s so beautiful! I had been fishing before but have never in my life caught anything. Albert was bound and determined that I would so we did some jigging. So much fun fishing with Bernice. Between the two of us we caught 6 fish! I was so delighted that I caught my first fish ever in the Atlantic Ocean! We can hardly wait to come back next year but except longer! Best vacation ever!

Beautiful spot, just not very convenient.

When we were looking at booking this place the first thing we had asked was if we could park a truck and 25ft trailer at their place. They said no problem that we would be able to turn it around in their yard but it had a bit of a hill. Needless to say when we arrived not only could we not back the trailer into the laneway we couldn’t even back it up the road. Very steep roadway and the laneway was really steep also. We managed to ask the gentleman at the wharf if we could park the trailer there and they were very accommodating. We were to stay for 4 nights but asked for a refund and stayed for 2 nights only, because we had our Harley in the back of our trailer to ride but could not get it out to ride and no where to park it either. Pamela did refund us for two nights. This house is in a beautiful little spot with nothing around. You have at least 1/2 hour drive in and out to get to anyplace. The house was very nice. When I opened the fridge to put our food in I was shocked to see how many items were in the fridge. The whole door side was filled with all kind of condiments. Might not bother other people but it did bother us. Would not stay at this place again.

Paradise

Beautiful place, wonderful friendly people. We especially enjoyed Friday night on the wharf, we felt so welcome. Out in the boat with Valerie watching her family pull in their catch was a highlight, the view was spectacular. Wouldn’t change a thing.

Southport Cottage Adventure

Beautifully appointed and soo clean! Our contact, Frances Avery, and I had a wonderful conversation that could still be going--connecting people and places. We had a fabulous run around Cape Bonavista and to Elliston, where our daughter, Alex was enchanted by the puffins around her feet, on the land. The Sealer's Interpretive Centre was so very moving, and beautifully presented. A masterpiece. Loved our trip to Trinity and Champneys West looking up MY old forebears. Herb Avery brought us fresh cod fillets, which Carl and Alex ate all in one sitting.-shaken in Trina's flour mix and pronounced the finest! I'm from NL originally, but don't eat fish! Don't ask! It was a perfect 10 days on a very Best-centric visit-.even to Best's Harbour in Placentia Bay, Carl's birthplace, now resettled. .A whirlwind time and a lovely home away from home to return to each day. Perfect for us. Beautiful for anyone. Views, hikes, people. Wonderful.

So peaceful and quiet. Unique.

Cottage had what we needed to be very comfortable. Super clean and ready for us. Had all of the extras we needed if we forgot to pick up. Very thoughtful. Very quiet and enjoyable.....found fresh lobster at wharf in Goose Berry Cove.. Abit of a drive to TCH but very scenic....only about 1/2 hour. We saw a whale last day there...feeding off Old Gravesite at end of street in town. Enjoyed our stay. Very picturesque fishing village. ...

About the host

Host profile image
My husband and I found this house a few years back while searching for a vacation property in Newfoundland. We couldn't have been more pleased with the beautiful town of Southport, its' people, its' surroundings and history. My husband was born in Newfoundland, we worked and were married there and both our children were born on the Island. While we are presently situated out West, we get back to our home as often as possible, but when we are away, we are happy to rent it out to those who are looking for the same kind of peace and relaxation we enjoy when in Southport.

Why they chose this property

There is nothing that beats relaxing on the balcony watching the boats come ashore or enjoying a spectacular sunset. A trip out on the water to catch your own fresh cod (when in season) and having it for supper that night for supper makes your mouth water just to think of it! If you like to hike, then head to nearby Little Heart's Ease Beach - gorgeous views. Day trips to St Mary's Bird Sanctuary, Bonavista, Terra Nova National Park, Placentia Bay, all within easy reach from our area.

What makes this property unique

Rest, relax and just get away from it all. When its night and the stars come out, you can sit around the firepit and look up to a spectacular show. This is what its' all about.
